Omnitaus··on Netflix fires organizer of trans employee walkout
I could not get married in the US until less than a decade ago. I can legally be fired in roughly half of the member states of our union based on my identity. I can be legally denied healthcare treatment. This isn't even getting into discrimination with random individuals, which can and does happen in the west. Unfortunately "we don't stone our queers" is not something you get a golden sticker for.

I get it's very en vogue to say marginalized communities secretly control society (Jewish marxist globalists etc) but don't you think we'd have secured equal treatment under the law first? If society is suddenly caving to any and all of my capricious whims I certainly didn't get the memo

Omnitaus··on Meat and mental health: Meat eaters suffer less depression, anxiety
Your gut cannot be healthy without fiber. It's important for the digestive process. There's a reason dietary guidelines include fiber, and I'm not sure where you're reading these journals but your agreement/disagreement is irrelevant to the point. A lack of fiber does _cause_ blood sugar fluctuations, cholesterol increases, constipation, etc.

Just because it's not as severe as rickets or scurvy doesn't mean people should ignore the needs of their gut microflora, especially given that the majority of cells in our bodies are (mostly beneficial) bacteria.

Wikipedia absolutely has a conservative bent, I wouldn't call the editing body "liberal" for using a newspaper owned by a union-busting multibillionaire as a source

You didn't really respond to the assertion that all American politicians are right-wing, but it's true. We have a "blood and soil" far right party and a "diverse corporate oligopoly" center-right party.

Omnitaus··on Second-Generation Toyota Mirai Reaches 845 Miles on a Single Hydrogen Tank
The same arguments were made against EV, but the infrastructure was built out nonetheless and now it's quite feasible to do cross-country trips. We know that carbon-based combustion isn't an option moving forward, I for one think it's valuable for both the risks and benefits of these emergent substitute technologies to be socialized.

Could you imagine trying to tell someone before the internet that we would run cables across the ocean to digitally connect separate continents? There's a reason the internet started as gov-funded research, and it's precisely because "market forces" are triangulating on the most profitable solution, not necessarily the most efficient one

Omnitaus··on Open Source Tax Software
If they were easy to pay, hard for wealthy taxpayers/corporations to avoid, and actually went to services you'd expect in a developed industrial society (healthcare, education, research) instead of Raytheon XJ-9 Knife Missiles(tm) people might not be so salty about paying the 4th lowest tax rate (as a % of GDP) in the OECD

Put another way, we are at the lowest tax rate this country has seen in a century. How much lower can we expect it to drop?

Omnitaus··on The scramble to make climate change in Alaska feel real
Care to explain why China is the villain here? They're the workbench of the western world that has outsourced those emissions. Per capita they use less and historically have not contributed much to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

We live longer than weather patterns and it's not difficult to see how things have changed within living memory. Especially in regions like Alaska

3 seconds of global emissions*
Omnitaus··on Scientists complete starch synthesis from CO2, revolutionary for agricultural
The largest industrial carbon capture facility we have built will mitigate ~3 seconds of global warming in a year. It won't get us anywhere without net zero emissions, even if we assume improvements of multiple orders of magnitude. Even a magic material that perfectly binds to atmospheric CO2 would require rounding up molecules in numbers I don't know the English for. This does open up the possibility of using the 1/3rd of arable land (26% of the terrestrial surface) being tied up growing feed as forests again, though. According to Current Affairs, re-foresting 70% of our terrestrial surface (not possible without drastic food production and consumption changes) would mitigate 1/10th of our global emissions. It's a lot of CO2 we're talking about, your car (if you have one) on average releases a metric ton of the stuff every 2000 miles.
Omnitaus··on Does Consciousness Come from the Brains Electromagnetic Field?
I'm not an expert but I completed a bachelor's in Neuroscience. There's definitely research, but it's not an easy setup to test. Currently what I've seen as the most popular theory is that our synapses and their arrangement, not neuronal logic, is what creates our ever-changing concept of self (consciousness)

Your synapses are constantly rearranging to process information differently (even if overall circuits remain similar) which can explain different behavior, but it's another jump entirely to say it explains selfhood

Omnitaus··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
Huh, it's almost as if the vaccine is to innoculate me against a specific lethal pathogen that I don't want to risk training my immune system on

If you want a better overall immune system eat better and excercise, there is zero reason to avoid a vaccine unless you're immunocompromised or allergic

Omnitaus··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
This is only an issue if everyone wants or needs kids. Glasses are similarly not a big deal. I feel like you could have used better examples to argue in favor of eugenics but at the end of the day it's still eugenics? People should have access to any and all medical advancements, better to address the problem than ignore it with selective breeding
Omnitaus··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
I mean if you're against vaccines, the best public health measure since soap, perhaps you're the weakest link we're begging natural selection to act on. Hope you don't use glasses, take antibiotics, receive surgery, or benefit otherwise from the million and one things humans have invented so as to not deal with random selection dependent on changing external stimuli
Omnitaus··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out

Omnitaus··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out

Omnitaus··on The Victims of Agent Orange the U.S. Has Never Acknowledged
>Agent Orange is somewhat harmless

It was a toxic chemical agent used as a weapon on civilian populations. The US has used that as an excuse to coup other countries. Why are we not held to the same standard?

We know it increased birth defects, cancer rates, and other health issues, which is why the VA pays US soldiers that were exposed. There's a reason we weaponized it, and it wasn't because it was somewhat harmless

Omnitaus··on Wobbly.app: a workplace organising platform
I'm not sure how their name referencing one of the best-known unions inherently makes them far-left. Police unions could use the platform, and they're decidedly not on the left (and excluded from the IWW for the same reason

Unions got us the 5 day work-week, here's hoping this platform enables workers to agitate for the 4 day work week, higher minimum wages, paid family leave (we are one of two countries that doesn't guarantee it), etc.

Omnitaus··on Mass die-off of birds in south-western US 'caused by starvation'
"Since 1900, 543 species of vertebrates have gone extinct. And those are just the ones we know of. In the past century, we have witnessed the disappearance of the ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis), the Round Island burrowing boa (Bolyeria multocarinata), the laughing owl (Ninox albifacies), the sea mink (Neovison macrodon), and the golden toad (Incilius periglenes), to name a few."

Omnitaus··on Indoor CO2 could cut our capacity for complex, strategic thinking: study
They're missing something. Right below, in the same article:

"As carbon dioxide levels rise, better ventilation won't be enough to protect us from its effects.

"There's no way to solve this except for keep the CO2 low," Karnauskas said. "You can try to increase ventilation, but you're only going to be ventilating higher-CO2 air, because it's going up outside.""

If CO2 concentrations outdoors double, you're already looking at a minimum of 1000ppm indoors.

Omnitaus··on The End of the Computer Age
I'm not sure America is as different from China as you seem to imply here. You don't manage to incarcerate more individuals than "an authoritarian communist dictatorship" four times your size without massively scaling the state's ability to monitor citizens.

20% of the world's prisoners are in America. Is spying a consistent Orwellian feature of American capitalism?
