OldFatCactus··on Saudi Aramco Is World’s Most Profitable Company, Far Exceeding Apple
> I do wonder how many people know that the wealthiest companies are private

Well then this was a misleading thing to say. You don't know that this is true

OldFatCactus··on Saudi Aramco Is World’s Most Profitable Company, Far Exceeding Apple
what other private companies are known to be significantly more profitable than Apple?
OldFatCactus··on Pinterest S-1
I hate what Pinterest does to google image searching. Sometimes I really just want to paste an image src in an online discussion without having to drill into devtools.

In context of the rest of the his history? Yes

OldFatCactus··on CERN cuts ties with 'sexist' scientist Alessandro Strumia
Lol

Firstly, the guy isn't qualified to make such a sweeping statement about the opposite sex. So before we even step into the problems with why it's a dumb idea to say such things, lets just make it clear that he's a physicist and not an anthropologist, biologist, or sociologist.

We definitely care about his moral character, but it's also just flat out incredibly naive to discredit women in his field when they've been playing catch-up for years due to cultural boundaries in the sciences.

Any scientist who steps out of their lane to attack another gender or race deserves every bit of what they get. It's cowardly to use your position as a scientist in a completely unrelated field to justify your hatred for some other group of humans.

Moreover, the guys history is terrible. He's got a chip on his shoulder about women and unethically chose to use his platform as a CERN scientist to exercise his anger.

OldFatCactus··on Showing the world how real soy sauce is supposed to taste
What are you trying to say? That the current trendy breeds of tomatoes aren't real tomatoes? Heirloom tomato breeds are very much in vogue these days as far as I know
OldFatCactus··on Exercise, fasting shown to help cells shed defective proteins
I started intermittent fasting again this week. I was telling my new coworkers about it and they thought I was crazy. "There's a name for skipping breakfast?"

Made me chuckle because I actually remember periods of time in college/early career where I was probably IFing unintentionally just because I was terrible at feeding myself. I especially remember periods of time where I was so addicted to video games, I would forget to eat. Obviously there are other issues with such a lifestyle, but I wonder how often we sometimes slip into positive diet and exercise habits just as a consequence of external things in our lives.

OldFatCactus··on Japan to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission
Ignoring the whataboutism going on here, there are a lot of other glaring issues with this comparison. Whales are not farmed. Their populations have been in decline since the dawn of sailing. Some organizations consider the targeted whale species (Minke?) to be endangered.

OldFatCactus··on Comcast rejected by small town, residents vote for municipal fiber instead
Sometimes reading comments on HN I feel like I stumbled into opposite-land.

Private operators are far more "notoriously corrupt" than local government. At large scale, government representation starts to break down and the will of the majority can become distorted. But at a local level, this is absolutely the better alternative to private ownership of what should be considered a fundamental human right.

OldFatCactus··on Prions, Nearly Indestructible and Universally Lethal, Seed the Eyes of Victims
I am not a doctor or scientist.

From what I remember on the topic, we do not have a good grasp on prions disease. There is a good chance that some other diseases in history may have actually been misdiagnosed prions disease. It can present as a form of dementia and the incubation period can be so long that many people are middle-aged before symptoms occur.

Tissue of the brain and spine are better for Prions propagation. Prions cause other proteins to misfold themselves. The proteins they affect are related to brain matter.

iirc, incubation periods can be decades long. I believe the more you injest, the shorter the incubation period
