OceanKing··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
For anyone else verifying, the target leakage appears to be as follows:

1)`outcome` is part of `metrics` at https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-... and https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-...

2) `metrics` goes into `ConversationState` at https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-... and https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-...

3) `metrics` (including `outcome`) makes its way into `ConversationState.state_vector` at https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-..., and is returned from environment `step()` and `reset()` functions at https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-... and https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-...

4) model ingests `state_vector` as input at https://huggingface.co/DeepMostInnovations/sales-conversion-...

OceanKing··on New study confirms gulf stream weakening
From the link:

> "While we can definitively say this weakening is happening, we are unable to say to what extent it is related to climate change or whether it is a natural variation," [the first co-author] Piecuch said. "We can see similar weakening indicated in climate models, but for this paper we were not able to put together the observational evidence that would really allow us to pinpoint the cause of the observed decline."

but also...

> [The second co-author] Beal added, "The Gulf Stream is a vital artery of the ocean's circulation, and so the ramifications of its weakening are global. I used to think of the ocean as our last remaining frontier, wild, pristine, and indomitable. It saddens me to acknowledge, from our study and so many others, and from recent record-breaking headlines, that even the remotest parts of the ocean are now in the grip of our addiction to fossil fuels." (emphasis mine)

Seems a little disingenuous to state in the publication that you cannot conclude the cause of the decline, and then in the press release go about definitively blaming it on fossil fuels, including stating that this conclusion is supported by your study.

OceanKing··on Deep Learning’s Diminishing Returns (2021)
I read this paper as commenting on the second-order derivative of benchmark progress with respect to DL techniques. The trends presented start with 2012-era models with 2012 data, and end with 2020 results for 2020-era models. Thus the extrapolation on training costs accounts for the current pace+style of progress and innovation in all relevant subareas of ML. To me it seems that it’s saying “if research continues in the same trends as it has from 2012 to 2020, here is where we will end up in 2035.”

In other words, in order for us to buckle the trend we would need to start innovating in ways that are unlike the ways that got us from AlexNet to here.

OceanKing··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
This sounds exactly like what I want to do! Would you mind answering a few questions? How did you find the town in Japan to move to? Also, did you buy/rent an apartment, or was it an Airbnb or something similar? How did you pay for it - savings, or the odd jobs that you talked about?

OceanKing··on Spain approves national minimum income scheme
Why do you think so? Why does the US care about essentially poor-people benefits in Spain?
OceanKing··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
Maybe they should, actually - I am surprised they’re not.
OceanKing··on Things I'd Change About Auto-Correct
That’s why you put the asterisk first - that way, autocorrect doesn’t correct the word after it (at least for me)
OceanKing··on Things I'd Change About Auto-Correct
Regarding the last point specifically, there is an established texting convention. Say you you (or autocorrect) have made a mistake and typed word A and you have already sent the message, but really you meant word B. Then, if you notice this mistake (granted, if), it is common convention to simply reply “*B”. Then, when the recipient reads to the mistaken word A and wonders why the word A seems out of place, they can look at the subsequent message and substitute B for A, without you even having to explicitly designate which word you made a mistake in (this is still sometimes necessary, but rarely).
OceanKing··on Show HN: Magic Photo Eraser – Remove Unwanted Content from Your Pictures
Great idea, great UI, very intuitive, but unfortunately the AI just doesn’t work that well.
OceanKing··on Show HN: Extract a .app from the macOS Zoom Installer to Drag to /Applications
Zoom does a few shady things with your OS, like starting hidden webservers with code execution privileges, auto-updates, etc. I think this tries to remove those parts, and leave just the app itself.
OceanKing··on Show HN: Skynet Simulator
No, I figured it out as well :)
OceanKing··on Show HN: Skynet Simulator
I'm still stuck on this, haha.
OceanKing··on Burger King is giving up on free plastic toys for kids – when will others follow
That’s not in BK’s interests in the slightest, though.

Why not `python3 -m http.server`?
OceanKing··on Minimum Wage Still Can’t Pay For A Two-Bedroom Apartment Anywhere
It seems that minimum wage is not, in fact, supposed to support a person 100%, not especially a family.

We ALL stand on the shoulders of giants?
OceanKing··on How to protect humans in a fully automated society
...is that it? Is there any insight or suggestion, or is this article just reiterating that the public has a justified fear of their jobs being automated?
OceanKing··on A Recipe for Training Neural Networks
I am bookmarking this article, this is pure gold.

Also, it seems to me that most of what he says can be distilled into a boilerplate/template structure for any given deep learning framework, from which new projects can be forked - does this already exist?

OceanKing··on D.C. housed the homeless in upscale apartments. It hasn’t gone as planned
I have several issues with this article.

One, 175% of market rate vouchers?! So the homeless are living better than non-homeless stable working families who are actually able to take care of themselves? In what world is that just?

Two, why do they classify gentrification as a problem? Would they rather have a uniform distribution of crime and poverty across the city? Because if so, the rich people will move somewhere else, and the poverty problem will only snowball from there, bringing the general quality of life in the city down.

OceanKing··on Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app
Oh wow, you can! This feature is super cool, I didn’t see it mentioned in the app description though. Thanks!
OceanKing··on Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app
I like the app, it’s very intuitive, I’m considering making it my go-to weather resource. I think it could be improved by adding an hourly forecast - perhaps consider adding a slider for how the blob will change over the course of the next 24 hours?
OceanKing··on A framework for creating Python/C++ polyglots
> The exact same Python++ file can be fed in unmodified to a stock C++ compiler and a stock Python interpreter and you will get the same output. The first version of Python++ was developed by William W Wold for the Stupid Shit No One Needs and Terrible Ideas Hackathon 2017.

Sounds about right, but it is very impressive.

OceanKing··on Show HN: Onnemi-4211, A minimal coding style that can be used with any language
Re: One Language

Imagine writing a web app. Writing HTML and CSS inside your JS codebase seems like a terrible and inconvenient idea, especially combined with the “150 lines per file” thing. You’ll have a JS file which will basically contain just HTML and some logic to put it in the DOM (and by the separation of concerns principle, if the file was less than 150 lines you’d probably just end it there anyway)

With a large web app, this would grow to hundreds of JS files. Some of these files would be by necessity named something like “page1-html.js” or something similar. At that point, you may as well call it “page1.html” and save yourself the headache.

OceanKing··on A California mall operator is sharing license plate tracking data with ICE
This article takes a distinctly negative tone towards this practice. What’s the problem here? License plate data is public information, it’s the same as if a person standing on the street saw your plate and told someone else. There should not be any expectation of privacy in regard to one’s license plate or the location of its sighting.
OceanKing··on Aristo – A system that reads, learns, and reasons about science
Question: What do humans eat?

Aristo is not sure about this one...

Aristo's best guess: Human beings will need food to eat.

Confidence: 18.43%

OceanKing··on Aristo – A system that reads, learns, and reasons about science

But the virtuous bean plants

Live on forever
