ORioN63··on The enigmatic Portuguese R (2013)
Link is dead.

As an anecdote, to kick off discussion, I, as a native European Portuguese speaker, that was born in France (moved to Portugal when I was 4), can _barely_ pronounce them correctly.

Not all R's have the same roll of the tongue. They're usually in the middle of the word. Hate those R's.

ORioN63··on All Bitcoin private keys are on this website
They're the trivial wallet addresses (close to the beginning and end of the search space). I would expect them to be used for debugging and testing in the early days.

Indeed, they are. Just like your comment and mine are included in the library of babel: https://libraryofbabel.info/bookmark.cgi?comment:14
ORioN63··on The House That Vanished
There's a narrative that I hear often about Corvo island:

Corvo is a small island in the Azores archipelago, which is home to less than 500 habitants.

Every time a police officer, joins the island, it usually has a bit of a tough time, as it tries to write fines and issue warnings to the small population. The small population, not only disregard its orders, but they actually shut them out.

Since there's very few establishments, the police officer, eventually, has to comply with the population.

To be honest, I don't know how much truth there is, in this story, but I don't find it hard to believe.

ORioN63··on Astronomers push for global debate on giant satellite swarms
> I want a mesh of satellites around the earth.

I assume your motivation is (alongside with a bunch of us), "bring people closer to space than ever before", but you have provided no evidence, that polluting low earth orbit with arguably redudant satellites is a good approach.

You seem to imply that it will lead in "revolution in prices". I too, commend SpaceX for the landing boosters, but for now it doesn't reduce the price nowhere near enough to let humanity approach the space age. Starlink comparatively, IMO does nothing.

Space tethers, anyone?

ORioN63··on JWT Tokens are NOT safe
Refresh tokens are the real alternative, IMO.

I kinda agree it looks like an ad for redis, since it doesn't even considers alternatives.

ORioN63··on Comic Mono – a legible monospace font
Yeah, I'm from '94 - I've never seen a world without Comic Sans. Or Wingdings for that matter.

That just triggered an old memory from very early me playing around with clip-art and transitions on PowerPoint.

> In Firefox you can add "ui.systemUsesDarkTheme" as an integer in about:config and set it to "0" for forced light or "1" for forced dark. This setting changes what is reported by the media query, you can still set your OS and/or browser theme independently. You will need to restart Firefox to apply the setting. [1]

ORioN63··on Nonnative English speakers share their gripes about speaking English
I'm from Portugal. I'm not aware of any difference regarding that word in particular, but tbh I wouldn't know. I'm always surprised with some of the differences I find from time to time.

I can tell you though, that using the word "periferia" is actually common in some place (although a bit rare in most). It's mostly used as a synonym for 'around the borders'.

The example you've mentioned: "move the burgers to the periphery of the barbecue", actually seems perfectly fine. It seems a little bit over-detailed, I guess that a bit context-dependent but I wouldn't bat an eye to the equivalent of "move them to the periphery".

From what I recall 'periferia' is also commonly used in TV news.

ORioN63··on The app that lets you pay to control another person's life
zyper.com which was adquired by Discord, tried the same approach, but I think there was always the issue of the advertising platform.

The biggest public forums now-a-days are org-owned online platforms. Even if you have amazing content creators, you still have to find a way to co-exist with the platform, controlled by giants.

I too, see value a potentially transformative business model, but it still seems a hard place to start in until you've achieved a good enough network effect.

Disclaimer: Worked for Zyper.

ORioN63··on How Lucky Is Too Lucky in Minecraft?
No, it wouldn't. He is accused of cheated by messing the probabilities of Blaze drops and Piglin trading.

The map seed is not related to either.

ORioN63··on Write Gitlab CI Pipelines in Python Code
It was created for human readability, but always with machine interop in mind, otherwise English/<NatLang>, would prob. do just fine in most cases, especially if sprinkled with some markup.
ORioN63··on Has UML died without anyone noticing?
I don't think I've have ever met a software engineer in Portugal that is on the "Ordem de Engenheiros". It's far more common, because indeed they're legally bound, with civil engineers, material engineers and such.

That may also be true for some areas, but you can def. sign a contract for software development with just a generic business license.

ORioN63··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
It's not _the_ problem, but it's an actual problem. If you follow the thread, it seems they did manage to get a few approved:

I agree this whole thing paints a really ugly picture, but it seems to validate the original concerns?

ORioN63··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments

I couldn't find anything regarding arresting and torturing foreign tourists.

ORioN63··on European Union allowing the use of deepfakes
Great!

1. What would be the point of a deepfake prohibition? The tech is here and it can be useful. Prohibition only leads to further issues legislating against actual bad actors.

2. People like images/videos, people mostly trust images/videos, but for that same reason they're commonly the best tools to deceive and deceit. Here's to hoping that deepfakes will increase their scrutiny and awareness.

Do you have a suggestion on top of your critic?

What would be the proper way to enact constructive change on behaviors?

ORioN63··on Italian authorities discover 29M Oxford/AstraZeneca doses: La Stampa
Wouldn't AstraZeneca be still required to deliver the orders at the price that it was agreed?

IIRC, most of the EU, has already ordered enough vaccines for the whole population.

The fact that you've pointed out, still doesn't still well with me though. If most developed countries will already have been vaccinated, are they trying to take the profit from developing economies instead?

ORioN63··on Small, cheap spy satellites mean there’s no hiding place
Disclaimer: My opinion.

I am fairly sure, no one is taking pictures of the whole earth, in 20 minutes intervals in a sufficiently high resolution to pick out an airplane. Specially one, flying over water.

For reference, ISS at its height ~400km, can see roughly 3% of the Earth's surface. This is without any kind of lens.

If someone has any kind of evidence, showing it otherwise, it would be great to see.

ORioN63··on IPFS Local Offline Collaboration Sig
I've discovered Fission the past week. I've added it to the list of technologies for unhosted/0apps, like SOLID or remotestorage, that I keep track.

Does anyone that has dug that rabbit hole deeper, than I have, has any insight on why doesn't this architecture seems to catch on? I feel like it's a monetization issue, but have nothing to back that up.

ORioN63··on MasterCard to open up network to cryptocurrencies
I want to add that Ethereum gas (fees), are at the moment quite expensive.

That being said, there's work being done to lower that and competing blockchains are coming up, that support the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) or at the very least supporting Solidity (which in turn compiles to EVM assembly).

There's a amazing fintech ecosystem being created in Ethereum, with decentralized exchanges, trustable oracles, DAOs, etc. It's definitely worth the look.
