NuSkooler··on Java Is Underhyped
Ah, someone who wasn't around to see the years of real Java hype.

I've had to work with Java professionally for a number of projects over the years, and honestly the only use for it I've actually agreed with as "good" is on Android -- and as we know, Google tweaked it, battles ensued, yadda yadda ...and even they are moving away from it.

The shitshow that owns it is good enough to avoid it, let alone the language itself.

NuSkooler··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
I think it's important to remember that many of these "death bed" bits of wisdom are often the same or extremely similar to those found in deep psychedelic and religious experiences, meditation, so on.

As someone pointed out these are often also similar to the more "child like" thoughts that are not constrained by society and do very much so seem to be more of the things that actually do matter.

NuSkooler··on The Pros and Cons of DRY Code
I would absolutely DRY the example. Auth middleware is an example of DRY, which in the real world would likely live here.
NuSkooler··on Parler Tricks: Making Software Disappear
Again, private companies really need to remain smaller. The size of the companies are completely out of control. So do they have too much control? Of course.

With that said, they are only doing what they know the masses want. So in a way, they're just doing the people's bidding. If Google thought the majority wanted Parler and hate speech, they'd certainly have kept it up.

NuSkooler··on Parler Tricks: Making Software Disappear
Parler is back up (as a website) and could even host a APK for Android. In addition, there are multiple Android stores as alternatives to the Play Store.

For years people have griped over this "fragmentation".

Google, Apple, and others are much too powerful. I cannot deny that. Something really needs done. However, they made the right move. It's not "censorship", and yes you do have options if you're the type that wants garbage like Parler.

NuSkooler··on Degoogling My Life
A while back I went through the motions of moving away from Google. FWIW, a very nice email service (that I believe I found from a article posted on HN actually) is Purely Mail (https://purelymail.com/). Certainly worth putting in the consideration pile.

As pointed out in the comments here: Get yourself a domain and "own your email". If Purely Mail dies, I can move my provider and keep my email.

NuSkooler··on Bring back the ease of 80s and 90s personal computing
Listen, I love retro computing. And sure, the systems were much simpler. Systems get more complex over time. I wouldn't be typing in this edit field in a web browser within a window in a multitasking GUI OS if not.

With that said, things certainly were not easier. Plug in a device now days and viola it works! Transfer a archive from Linux -> OS X -> Windows and you can view it (and even using the same multi-platform apps) across the board. ...the list goes on forever.

Can things be easier? Sure? Simplicity? Yes! Is it all rainbows and unicorns? Nah (as people have pointed out already you lose control).

Many systems exist for things like single file applications. Of course no one can agree on what that should look like it seems. AppImages, .apks (which are just Zip files), static binaries, containerized applications, etc. OS X has had .app's for a long time which are just a folder of files (and the common way to transfer that is a mountable image or archive).

People have tried many times to come up with embedded icons in ELF. Why some Linux users push back is still beyond me. Yes we know we need multiple formats and resolutions. OK, support that. .desktop files are nice, but that shouldn't be something I have to mess around with generally. Most systems still don't have a nice way to even create these files (which let's be honest: are just the Windows equivalent to a .lnk desktop shortcut).

Oof I could go on forever here. I think I'll stop.

NuSkooler··on My daughter was a creative genius, and then we bought her an iPhone
> There's many, many ways of learning through these devices.

You can artificially lock down the device and expose only such things, but default mode is YouTube and Roblox type stuff.

NuSkooler··on Reasons to prefer Linux over Windows (2014)
Disclaimer: I love Linux. I also like Windows (it's extremely solid).

RE path limitations. I actively -- and have for many years -- use paths much longer that 25x characters. Including in Windows Explorer. I can't recall the last time I had a issue, though IIRC there is some sort of operation (that I guess I never use?) via Explorer where one can run into issues.

The main issue, and it exists on Linux as well is this in code:

char path[MAX_PATH]; // or equiv

In Linux this generally gives you a 4k buffer so you're MUCH less likely to hit the issue of course.

NuSkooler··on Universal DOOM – a single EXE for DOS 6, and Windows 95 to Windows 10
Mostly just pointing it out. I think you're probably right as to the "why". UPX/packers often flag this sort of thing.

I'm assuming the Registry keys and the like are from the statically linked in libs.

NuSkooler··on New Features in the Fish Shell
I've been almost exclusively using Fish on all my installations for a few years now.

Every once in a while I have to sub to Bash, but it's very rare.

NuSkooler··on Show HN: Dungeon Map Doodler – Free online map drawing tool
I gotta say, this is amazing! I'm (very slowly) working on a textmode RPG. Something like this really helps me to come up with the world!
NuSkooler··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
This feels like a huge step back. One of the first very obvious bits has been pointed out numerous times in this thread already: The main panel is shrunk down while various navigation is off in no-man's land.
NuSkooler··on Ask HN: What are your arguments in favor of end-to-end encryption?
Exactly
NuSkooler··on Ask HN: What are your arguments in favor of end-to-end encryption?
The short answer: "None of your god damn business", which is the point.

The only counterpoint to end-to-end is "we want to be able to access your private conversations", which isn't really a counterpoint unless you agree with spying on citizens and would like to also allow the government to come into your house and place listening devices as they please, listen to your phone calls whenever they please, open up your mail whenever they please, so on. Hell, actually require you to wear a device at all times so all conversations can be recorded. No, just no.

NuSkooler··on Psytrance Guide
> BTW Sphongle definitely isn't psytrance, and Infected Mushroom isn't well regarded in the underground.

Nonsense on both statements. Shpongle crosses all sorts of spectrum's, and certainly into psy/etc. trance.

While some sort of music elitists may try to consider IM as "too mainstream" at this point, they certainly were not that way for many years.

Talk to just about any modern artist in the genre about their heavy influences and you'll find Simon Posford (Shpongle) and Infected Mushroom.

NuSkooler··on Coke Putting Dasani Water in Cans Amid Backlash Against Plastic
New amazing concept: Put water in a re-usable water. Drink. Repeat.
NuSkooler··on Dhall: A Non-Repetitive Alternative to YAML
They are both text based configuration file formats made to be easier for humans to interact with, so I'm not sure what you're confused about?
NuSkooler··on Dhall: A Non-Repetitive Alternative to YAML
Still much prefer HJSON (http://hjson.org/) for stuff that people might need to touch.

If it's truly for end-users (read: non-admin/dev types), you probably shouldn't have them touching configuration files _at all_.

NuSkooler··on Ask HN: Old guys, what do you miss about development in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s?
While not exactly as it was of course, FTN-style networks including FidoNet are still going and active, Gopher is still a thing, ANSI packs are still being released very regularly (ACiD folks are mostly Blocktronics at this point), demo scenes are still active, so on.

Hop on a Telnet/SSH BBS and check it out!

NuSkooler··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC?
Yes, lots of people. Discord has become popular, but not enough & there are often bridge-bots running. I imagine Slack is in a similar boat.
NuSkooler··on HBO's Chernobyl may yet become the highest rated TV Show ever
Really the only thing I think could have better is had it been in Russian. I mostly got used to it, but it would have felt better listening to Russian and reading subtitles (IMO).
NuSkooler··on Telnet BBS Guide
There are many active boards, and a lot of activity between them on FTN style networks such as fsxNet and ArakNet.

Is there a port to hit this from a real terminal?
NuSkooler··on Show HN: KeyDB – A Multithreaded Fork of Redis
Interesting. My personal response to that list would be:

1) Binding a specific CPU->NIC like one often does for LB's such as HAProxy is likely more performant.

2) Multiple instances of Redis on a single box; one per physical CPU core

3) I can't argue that it's annoying, but generally with Redis you're going to want shards across physical machines anyway.

Not trying to attack, just curious. As you say, that's the beauty of OSS so props to you!

NuSkooler··on Show HN: KeyDB – A Multithreaded Fork of Redis
I'd like to hear more on why you believe the Redis team is incorrect?

NuSkooler··on 41 Years Ago, There Were BBS Instead of the Internet
It's been pointed out already, but a little more info: There is a fairly large (and growing, actually) community of BBSers in the modern area. Telnet is even slowing being pushed out in favor of SSH and/or secure WebSockets (BBS from your browser!) in addition to other crypto and related tech where it can apply. There are boards running on retro hardware, under emulators, and even quite a few modern BBS software being written (disclaimer: I'm the author of one in Node.js).

There is a lot of nostalgia, but also a lot of people enjoy time away from the modern corporate controlled web. A text-mode interface, community, etc. is quite nice at times.
