NorwegianDude··on Stop Killing Games – European Citizens' Initiative
Welcome to 2024, I guess. Let's hope it won't start raining while it's open and there is no coverage, lol.

Next year the brakes might require a round trip to the data center too, so I guess we should start to account for network latency when braking. /s

NorwegianDude··on If we want a shift to walking, we need to prioritize dignity
Having the option to walk doesn't mean that you can't drive. One can have both. Nice weather to walk in? Maybe I'll walk the 10 minutes to the shopping center. Raining a lot? Take the car.
NorwegianDude··on SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos
So there will be a lot of blurry portraits coming from Illinois and Texas as autofocus can't find faces? /s
NorwegianDude··on Tau: Open-source PaaS – A self-hosted Vercel / Netlify / Cloudflare alternative
Then you have 24 TB with RAID10, not 30 TB. I guess that's why he was wondering.
NorwegianDude··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
Just a note, you should heat the water up every now and then to kill any legionella bacteria.
NorwegianDude··on Claude 3.5 Sonnet
For anyone paying and using Claude Pro, what are the message limits like compared to ChatGPT Plus?

I tried one question that gave me a good answer, and then I tried two of the sample questions. After a couple more short input/outputs I reaced the max messge limit. They state that Pro is at least 5x, but if that is only ~25 short token input/outputs then that's too little for it to not be really annoying to use. What is usage actually like? Is free just very limited now compared to pro? Or is pro also very limited?

NorwegianDude··on Cloudflare Connectivity Issues in Eastern US and Central Europe
That's a lot of website that are now down... I find it impressive how terrible bigger services that are supposedly "redundant" are at reliability because of all the added complexity.
NorwegianDude··on DJI ban passes the House and moves on to the Senate
I agree that Huawei didn't have the best phones, but it was not that far off, and for the price it was arguably a better phone.

Need a phone with a great camera? Then Huawei is much better than anything Samsung, Apple, and Google makes. Huawei market share was taking off at crazy speed before the bans on both the software and hardware side.

NorwegianDude··on Norway discovers Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals
Ehh, what?

Just because Norway is far north does not mean that it gets less sun all year round. It has more sun in summer, and less in winter.

You can be at the northern most point of mainland Norway now and wait for sunset. But you will have to wait until August. It's been up since May 11.

NorwegianDude··on Norway discovers Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals
There is not much sun in the winter, but that also means there is more sun in summer. The variance is greater, but it averages out.
NorwegianDude··on WebKit fix: Quirk news.ycombinator to skip TextAutoSizing
It's a ~43 % increase, not 30 %. Apple takes 30 %, so you would have to increase the price by ~43 % to cover it.
NorwegianDude··on Hotwire: HTML Over The Wire
I agree that that calendar doesn't seem great, and the problems do exist. However, adding tons of latency while saying you're not doing so in order to make fun of someone's work is either malicious or extreme lack of competence.

In the video he sets the chrome throttle option to slow 3G, and that adds large restrictions on bandwidth, and a ton of latency. He states that he is not doing so, and that adding latency can't be done in the browser. That is literally what the option does.

If you add seconds of latency then requests will take seconds, who would imagine...

NorwegianDude··on FrankenPHP: Modern PHP App Server
I tried it and found it to be really slow, not even using my cores properly. Spent some time in the lacking docs and didn't figure it out...

It says production ready with just a few commands and states 3,5 times the performance of fpm, but it's running at like 1 % of the performance of fpm for me. I also tried the executable, same issue. Was expecting at least 200K rps for hello world...

NorwegianDude··on Seven out of 10 Europeans believe their country takes in too many immigrants
I'm not "anti immigration", but I would prefer if immigration had stricter rules in order to better integrate immigrants, reduce crime and lower costs.

We do have a very good safety net, so immigrants who don't contribute does not help the economy, they can be really expensive. In some extreme cases some get 100K+ USD in support yearly because they don't work, and that is when NOK is much weaker than it usually is.

Most of the money Norway spend on financial social assistance is on immigrants, even though they make up less than 20 % of the population. Depending on where immigration is from, the general economic benefit might be very negative or positive.

Generally I do think that someone who moves to another country should do what they can to become a part of society.

NorwegianDude··on Why use ECC? (2015)
I recently(ish) built a new home server using an cheap AM5 motherboard from ASUS that supports ECC. Good performance and power usage is around 45 W idle with a couple of SSDs and a couple of HDDs spinning.

Not the cheapest, but I wanted to keep power consumption low for noise and reduced heating while still having good performance if needed.

I also considered a motherboard with IPMI on AM5(Asrock rack), but that was much more expensive.

Worked out quite nicely.

NorwegianDude··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Fair enough. You are correct that Apple aren't dumb, but they do mislead as much as they can in marketing, and by their own words from previous court cases you're not a reasonable person if you think it's facts.

In this case they do straight up lie, without a question. There is no reasonable explanation for the claim. If they had some absurd meaning behind it then they should have put a footnote on it.

NorwegianDude··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Of course a GPU from Nvidia is also a NPU. People are spending billions each month on Nvidia, because it's a great NPU.

The fact is that a GPU from Nvidia is a much faster NPU than a CPU from Apple.

It is marketing as you say, but it's misleading marketing, on purpose. They could have simply written "the fastest integrated NPU of any CPU" instead. This is something Apple often does on purpose, and people believe it.

NorwegianDude··on Apple introduces M4 chip
The text clearly states faster than any AI PC, not that its faster than any NPUs integrated into a CPU.

They could have written it correctly, but that sounds way less impressive, so instead they make up shit to make it sound very impressive.

NorwegianDude··on Apple introduces M4 chip
> M4 has Apple’s fastest Neural Engine ever, capable of up to 38 trillion operations per second, which is faster than the neural processing unit of any AI PC today.

I always wonder what crazy meds Apple employees are on. Two RTX 4090s is quite common for hobbyist use, and that is 1321 TOPS each, making two over 69 times more than what Apple claims to be the fastest in the world. That performance is literally less than 1 % of a single H200.

Talk about misleading marketing...

NorwegianDude··on Dear Europe, please wake up
> Failing in the EU has the same downside as in the US

Not really. The safety net is much better in some EU countries.

NorwegianDude··on Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS: Noble Numbat
First impressions of 24.04 desktop compared to 22.04 is that it feels more polished. A lot of apps on 22.04 had large windows around them taking up way to much vertical space by default.

The foundation is way better than any other OS, so if they just keep improving the UI/UX then it would be a dream to use.

NorwegianDude··on The xz attack shell script
It's too verbose and vauge, the information density is terrible. The only people I've seen who writes like that are those who need to reach a certain number of words while saying as little as possible.
NorwegianDude··on Majority of web apps could just run on a single server
You can also avoid most reboots by livepatching the kernel.
NorwegianDude··on Majority of web apps could just run on a single server
Servers are a lot more stable than you think.
NorwegianDude··on Postgres is eating the database world
This post was very wrong and misleading on multiple points.

I have seen a lot of people praising Postgres over e.g. MariaDB. But more often than not it seems to be people how lack knowledge.

Take this linked post, where the author points out "The untuned PostgreSQL performs poorly (x1050)" later followed by "This performance can’t be considered bad, especially compared to pure OLTP databases like MySQL and MariaDB (x3065, x19700)".

Frist of all, those are not pure OLTP databases. And if the author took a better look at the benchmark he would see that MariaDB using ColumnStore is at x98. That's 10x the performance of Postgres out of the box, and 200x faster than the author stated.

NorwegianDude··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
No, the "core technology fee" applies to the app store too.
NorwegianDude··on Free data transfer out to internet when moving out of AWS
> Over 90 percent of our customers already incur no data transfer expenses out of AWS because we provide 100 gigabytes per month free from AWS Regions to the internet.

Damn, that's a lot of tiny customers. 100 GB per month is less than what many use on their phone during a month. So basically, most people using AWS is definitely people who don't need it to scale.

NorwegianDude··on Show HN: Workout Tracker PWA
> For example, double tapping on the screen triggers a zoom, and there's no way to disable it.

That's objectively BS and 100 % skill issue on your side. A simple "disable zoom PWA" search on google would definitely give a bunch of sites telling you how to do it. It's super simple, just add a viewport meta tag.

NorwegianDude··on The /unblock API from Browserless: dodging bot detection as a service
I've been fighting tailor made bots for over 15 years, and I can't say I'm a fan of people trying to circumvent it. In some cases it might not matter, but in others it can actually ruin a lot of things.

Let's say I have a few 100 Gbps connections that is mostly idle, is it fine if I direct them at browserless? No? Exactly, that kind of traffic is not wanted.

NorwegianDude··on Groq runs Mixtral 8x7B-32k with 500 T/s
Technically, I guess you can use speculative execution to speed it up, and in that way take a guess at what the 100th token will be and start on the 101st token at the same time? Though it probably has it's own unforeseen challenges.

Everything is predictable with enough guesses.
