NorthOf33rd··on An open letter to FB, Twitter, Instagram regarding algorithms and my son's birth
This is fascinating. It seems like it would be pretty easy to write a chrome app that runs a window in the background that interacts with every. single. advertisement.

Unfortunately the people to pay the toll would be the businesses running CPC campaigns, not google.

You'd have to run it at such massive scale that google wouldn't be able to collect because advertisers could show that something was wrong with google's model.

NorthOf33rd··on An open letter to FB, Twitter, Instagram regarding algorithms and my son's birth
Instagram is not a person. Don't ask it to be decent.

Those ads are not your friends. Don't expect them to treat you like they care.

You're not sharing your information with a human. You're sharing it with a business who is tuned to maximize profit. The ROI on dealing with still births for advertising is probably negative.

They don't care about you. You've made the decision to let a business deep into your personal life, a space once reserved only for loved ones. These are the consequences.

David Levine's Some of the People, All of the Time in the most recent issue of N+1 Magazine is a fantastic short story that revolves around claqueurs.

That's still an absurdly high multiple of ARR.
NorthOf33rd··on DuPont Has Spread Pollution Around the World. Now Aims to Sell Water Filters
I'm not sure for how long, but DuPont has been making water filters for some time. Since at least 2014 [1]

Ironic? Okay, sure. A little evil? Fine. But, the headline is garbage.

NorthOf33rd··on San Diego's Bird Scooter Hoarding Problem
There have been many great pricing models posed in this thread to dis-incentivize gaming, but I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned the simple "make bird hunting a full time job with benefits."

Just like uber before them, bird threatens to upend some reasonably decent jobs in cities with bike share programs- assuming the bike share programs don't learn from taxi drivers and adapt.

So much of the reason these things work- and that the companies themselves become massively valuable is the externalization of costs. That doesn't have to be a given.

NorthOf33rd··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
Gosh, that's tough, and I'm hoping she came out the other side stronger.

This doesn't seem specific to tumblr though. I can't think of a network that doesn't have the same dark corners and nasty reinforcement. It's the internet.

NorthOf33rd··on Why Japanese Whisky Is So Good and So Hard to Find
> But just like buying a >$1k bike, for the average person you can't take advantage of the extra value and care that went into the product.

I'd put this price at around 2500. The better shifting from a decent group set makes a huge difference in a new rider's ability to enjoy the ride. It's hard to enjoy a ride when your chain keeps dropping and you cant shift through your gears. Though, I really wish someone would come out with a mass market Ultegra spec'ed decent geometry steel bike for ~1k.

I've consumed my fair share and wish so desperately that those would come stateside. Based on taste I'd be pretty sure it's whiskey. Also, the english language suntory site states that they are whiskey.

NorthOf33rd··on Lyft Follows Uber Into Bike-Sharing Lane, Buying Owner of CitiBike
Thats interesting. Are you in the US? How are you thinking about the legislative landscape that seems to be eager to classify anything non-pedal assist as an e-motorcycle?
NorthOf33rd··on Lyft Follows Uber Into Bike-Sharing Lane, Buying Owner of CitiBike
ebikes are pedal assist bikes. If there is no pedal assist, and the motor can be activated with a throttle, then it's an e-motorcycle.
NorthOf33rd··on Lyft Follows Uber Into Bike-Sharing Lane, Buying Owner of CitiBike
Bird just opened in SLC and they are suddenly everywhere. Park City, just a few miles away, launched the country's first ebike share system and it's wildly popular. They are also everywhere.

I have no hard data to prove this, though I'm sure it's out there- I don't think it's bike vs scooter, it's electric vs human powered that's driving bird's popularity over bike shares.

NorthOf33rd··on The cold blue light of modern touchscreens poses health problems
There is one area I'd like to see a universal ban on blue spectrum LED's - street and commercial overhead lights.

I live in Salt Lake City and there has been an unfortunate push by Rocky Mountain Power to replace all the streetlights with bright blue/white LED overhead lights. Their output is significantly greater than the lights they are replacing and the light is completely obtrusive. In the city there is the unfortunate and unavoidable issue of spillage into peoples bedrooms.

I've also had the unpleasant task of coaxing my dog to give up the dead birds that have suddenly started showing up my back yard. Likely attributable to the new "better" lights.

NorthOf33rd··on Hype and plunder: Domo a new low for self-indulgent IPOs
Pluralsight being a prime example of a proud Utah startup focused on making a quality product with great management.

The instant connection to MLM's is unfortunate but it's real. It's not something that can be moved past unless there's meaningful change. I would argue there hasn't been meaningful change. If anything they've gained strength and notoriety see vivent, domo, etc. Would love to be convinced otherwise that meaningful change has come or is coming.

As far as a strong sales culture, I agree. MLM's are prevalent in Utah because of the sales culture. Not the inverse.

NorthOf33rd··on Hype and plunder: Domo a new low for self-indulgent IPOs
I should say, in full disclosure, that it worries me because I'm a product manager in the region. So, I am concerned about economic blow back to firms that have better business practices and therefore my ability to practice here. Though, I'm currently seeking remote work opportunities as this is a pervasive issue.
NorthOf33rd··on Hype and plunder: Domo a new low for self-indulgent IPOs
I'd love to see the LA Times go back and revisit the Utah Valley region and the culture that helped contribute to this. The Utah Valley is chock full of startups with a serious inferiority complex to their big brothers in Silicon Valley, hence derivative name. More importantly, Utah is the “multi-level marketing capital of the world [1]” This kind of sales and growth tactic is not limited to the diet smoothie and cosmetics world, but is absolutely pervasive in the valley. Note- SLC and the Utah Valley may be united in the Silicon Slopes moniker, but they are about as similar as Austin and Waco, TX.

A few observations on Domo

1) The product is weak. It’s pretty dashboards with very limited “real” BI capabilities. The connectors are custom, not OOB/end user configurable – unless end user happens to be IT.

2) They seem to be aware that the product is weak, as their demos include an NDA. Until recently there was almost no “real” information available on what exactly Domo is or does. Only void marketing speak.

3) Their absurd domopalooza (or DP for short, no joke) events included artists like Kesha and Macklemore.

4) Their totally overblown marketing hype surrounds an incoherent me-too product roadmap. Rather than focusing on building a quality product they are going for checkboxes and chasing after Slack etc with features like Chat

5) They have a billboard that reads “If Hillary Had DOMO She would have won.”

I've been predicting for a while that DOMO’s hubris would cause it to be one of the first in the scene to fail spectacularly. What worries me about that prediction is the economic harm that would do to the rest of the Valley especially given the impact of MLM economics.
