NoraCodes··on Rust's Poor Composability
Yeah, Rust does that as well. The issue the author is talking about here is that when you write a closure:

    fn foo(inputs: &[Input]) -> Result<Vec<Output>, Error> {
        inputs
        .iter()
        .map(|input| { input.something_fallible()? })
        .collect()
    }
that ? is an early return from the closure, not foo. The correct way to do this is:

    fn foo(inputs: &[Input]) -> Result<Vec<Output>, Error> {
        inputs
        .iter()
        .map(|input| { input.something_fallible() })
        .collect::<Result<Vec<Output>, Error>>()
    }

> Like having to do `&mut *` to pass a reference to a function

I'm curious about your use case for this. `&mut *` I've seen, for instance to dereference a RwLockWriteGuard, but why the double dereference?

> the for loop syntax should be simple syntactic sugar for iterator.iter().for_each(BODY), not bespoke syntax. The fact this breaks wrecks my mental model.

I'm sorry to be blunt, but this mental model is wrong. .for_each runs a function, while for does not.

If what you want is to return early on an error, you can .collect() an Iterator<Item=Result<T, E>> directly into a Result<Vec<T>, E> and then ? that. That's the equivalent of for and ?. Or, you can collect into a Vec<Result<T, E>>.

> You must use the for loop syntax if you want to use .await, because iterators are not powerful enough to support real world use-cases.

Given that what this requires is async closures, and async closures are an active area of work, this seems like a somewhat unhelpful comment.

I definitely agree about having better syntax for iter_mut, though.

NoraCodes··on A non-federated decentralized social protocol based on Git
So far as I understand, Git is both federated and decentralized - but I could easily be misunderstanding the definition of "federated" in this context.
NoraCodes··on A non-federated decentralized social protocol based on Git
Unless I misunderstand, this is federated - each instance stores data related to its user, and fetches from other instances the data it's interested in (from other users the user is following.)

It also doesn't do much to address the reasons users in federated systems tend to congregate around large(r) servers, like discoverability and reliability.

It's a neat PoC but I think the communication needs some work.

NoraCodes··on Linux is Making Apple Great Again
I don't doubt it. I'm sure my Windows issues have to do with some hardware choice I made, or some non-standard configuration I'm using. My only point is that you can have a stable experience with LotD or an unstable one with Windows.
NoraCodes··on Linux is Making Apple Great Again
I currently regularly use 4 desktop/laptop computers: a T480 running Kubuntu, an L420 running Xubuntu, a Dell work laptop running Kubuntu, and a custom gaming desktop running Windows 10.

I have spent dramatically more time delving into OS nonsense to solve issues on the Windows machine, from "ghost" controller inputs making WPF applications unusable to audio devices randomly disappearing to some weird HDCP interaction causing my display to turn off when Disney Plus is loaded in Firefox.

I do not have nearly the same amount of trouble with my Linux machines; nor does my boyfriend, who is not a technical professional and uses Xubuntu exclusively.

Yes, Linux on the desktop can require tinkering, but it's not always the case. With the right hardware choices and some thoughtful setup, it can be remarkably stable.

As a NixOS-on-server user, I'm super happy to see this! It makes things so much easier for using Nix on my existing desktops.
NoraCodes··on The Fediverse is already dead
I don't read SSC, so thank you for linking this - super interesting to see that someone coming from, as you say, a totally different perspective came to a similar conclusion.
NoraCodes··on The Fediverse is already dead
Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. I kind of regret the title, given how much confusion it's caused. I didn't initially intend for it to be clickbait, but I think it's functioning that way :(
NoraCodes··on The Fediverse is already dead
> The Fediverse [...] has existed long before Mastodon.

Yes, 100% agreed - I spend the first section talking about just that.

Ultimately I think that IRC-like networks might be a really interesting social form to explore via smaller federations of ActivityPub software. It's not something I'd want to start or run (and huge shoutout to IRC ops, it's not an easy job) but I'd love to see what such a thing looks like in the world of microblogging.

NoraCodes··on Kerbal Space Program 2 Early Access Is Out Now
The lack of Linux support really bums me out. I know it's on the roadmap, but c'mon, the most prolific modder for KSP1 literally had "linux" in their name. They're leaving behind a lot of people.
NoraCodes··on How to weaponize the Yubikey (2019)
This is a neat concept - especially because, unlike a USB Rubber Ducky that looks like a Yubikey, you can actually demonstrate that your Yubikey-as-weapon is a Yubikey. Very devious!
NoraCodes··on Pulsar – A Community-Led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor
I'm enjoying the explosion in editor software going on right now. Even if most of them don't survive or gain a large audience, I'm sure the cross-pollination of ideas will lead to some great improvements in those that do.
NoraCodes··on OODA Loop
I always find formalized metacognitive tools like this very interesting. Having ingrained "memory items" that can be called on as if they were instinctual requires a huge training investment, and for highly dangerous situations the tradeoff of time spent to value is much clearer than for, say, software engineers. That said, having the right metacognitive tools deeply embedded in one's thought pattern might still be very valuable for those of us that fly desks rather than jets!

In America, healthcare (insurance and out-of-pocket) can be a major contributor to cost of living for anyone with anything more than the occasional cold. It's especially bad for self-employed people like the Adams.
NoraCodes··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
This is a great point! I think a lot of people, myself included, do the same thing with YouTube videos or even long Netflix shows; it's playing, I'm half-listening to it, but I'm also accomplishing some annoying or semi-mechanical task. If you asked how much video content I consume, you might be shocked at the answer, but I wonder if we should count that as "wasting time".
NoraCodes··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
It's hard not to interpret this as a kind of "youth is wasted on the young" sentiment - that children shouldn't be allowed to do things they enjoy if those things are seen as wasteful, but that retirees should. I'd submit that society might be better off if we only required people to work to a degree reasonable for their mental and physical health, and didn't frame our entire lives around "getting somewhere" so we could finally be left alone. That might mean profits stop growing quite as quickly, but I think that's a fair trade for people actually being happier.
NoraCodes··on Poliastro – Astrodynamics in Python
Poliastro is a phenomenal bit of software. I only ever had the opportunity to use it once for a real project, but I really enjoyed doing so.

Why would a company pay someone less because they've been in jail?

NoraCodes··on iPad Pro M2
I doubt that. Many very serious artists use Procreate on an iPad as their primary medium, and I honestly can't think of a better tool without jumping about a thousand dollars in price, loath as I am to say it.
NoraCodes··on How Fly.io and Tailscale Saved Notado
> It's hard to imagine why the meaning has changed as much as it has

Because the supporting infrastructure was historically called that, and it stuck. Just like how pocket computers are called "phones" because they evolved from telephones.

They definitely are VPNs, just a specific subset of use cases of a VPN.

NoraCodes··on Sweden’s incoming cabinet says new nuclear reactors will be built
I don't think that this is the general belief of most anti-nuclear activists, and certainly not most people who don't believe in nuclear as a solution. Many are concerned about waste disposal, accident potential, and proliferation. These are all valid concerns, even though their figures and arguments tend to be out of date.

San Diego is really weird, basically. Unlike most cities in the US, the airport is very close to the center of the city.

Presumably similarly to HackerNews threads, which are paginated.
