I think you’re right and Buffet probably has the same mindset. Look at Berkshire Hathaway’s website lol no css styling whatsoever.

NoobSaibot135··on 1910: The year the modern world lost its mind
Not sure how accurate this is but there’s a book on how Adolf/Nazi’s were experimenting with hard drugs at that time.

https://www.amazon.ca/Blitzed-Norman-Whiteside-Shaun-Ohler/d...

They say Hitler was very charismatic, inspiring and a great public speaker. I seriously wonder how much drugs he was on at the time and how much that boosted and projected his own confidence (and then subsequently inspired all of his fellow countrymen Germans)?

NoobSaibot135··on Llama.ttf: A font which is also an LLM
> this wouldn't always be consistent right? Like "once upon a time _____" wouldn't always output the same thing, yes?

Would be cool if you could turn up/down the LLM’s temperature by pressing different keys other than just !!!!

Say pressing keyword numbers 0-9

NoobSaibot135··on Priced out of home ownership
> I don’t know why prices are still up though – if interest rates being high was making housing unaffordable, one would expect prices to be down.

We printed ~25% of all money in existence since 2020 so that obv means more diluted money chasing scarce housing (applies to everyone worldwide)

High real estate prices might be the new norm :(

I like your analogy of a tick tock ~= epoch of progress

Step change, then optimization of that step change

Kind of like a grand father clock with a huge pendulum swinging to one side, then another(commonly used metaphor).

NoobSaibot135··on The Nature of Code (2nd Edition)
Love coding train YouTube channel!

This guy is funny, knowledgeable and not full of himself (unlike others in our industry)

Learned a ton from Daniel when I was starting out

Seems like Pareto 80/20 law is not too dissimilar from powers of 2.

In binary, most significant(left most) bit is twice the magnitude of the previous bit. So that bit (or person) would contribute and get compensated accordingly.

Would also be similar to segment trees with each leaf node having a value of 1 with parents recursively summing the children?

NoobSaibot135··on British Columbia to recriminalize use of drugs in public spaces
> ruined mostly because a shelter and various other supports opened up down the block, and kind of turned the area into a mini-Skid Row

That’s why I’m against social housing.

Inner city welfare/government housing aggregates all the homeless into one area where open air drug markets can flourish and other nefarious activities are normalized.

Low income people should instead move to the outskirts of big cities where the rent is more affordable and they are more spread out.

NoobSaibot135··on An FDA approved device offers a new treatment for tinnitus
I got tinnitus after my second Pfizer shot (booster)

Anyone else speculating whether the shots somehow lowered our overall immune systems?

NoobSaibot135··on Twitter's pivot to x.com is a gift to phishers
I was blown away by the Every Day Astronaut Starbase tours.

Elon had all the intricacies and parts of the rockets memorized and was just rattling off details like it was nothing.

Kind of makes me think human intelligence is a direct function of memory.

NoobSaibot135··on Shutting down the letsblock.it project and its official instance

Also wish YouTube would copy X/Twitter where you get two toggle options:

1) For you (algo recommendations)

2) Directly following

You would ideally use directly following on the days where you’re time crunched.

NoobSaibot135··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
Steve Jobs once wrote something like this when he was high I believe.

I did not invent English or the alphabet, I didn’t grow my own food, etc.

NoobSaibot135··on Epic says Apple will reinstate developer account
> And if you combined all of the above with a cell phone, customers would rather carry 1 device than the 3 it previously took.

And not coincidentally this is exactly how Jobs pitched the original iPhone unveil.

An iPod, a phone, an internet communicator, an iPod, a phone…

NoobSaibot135··on European crash tester says carmakers must bring back physical controls
> the touchscreen, as long as it is responsive (of course the vast majority of car touchscreens are not, but some are)

Normal refresh cycle period for tablets(iPads) is ~5 years.

Normal life of a car is 10 years (2x).

That means that by year 7 or so, multi-touch performance in autos starts to seriously lag consumer tablet market.

Perhaps we need to have a replaceable/swappable infotainment console now

NoobSaibot135··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
Hal lived literally a few blocks from Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto for 10 years.

Hal was also the first person who Satoshi contacted, the first person who mined, and died (ALS) a little after Satoshi’s final public correspondence.

I read somewhere that Hal was running a marathon at roughly the same time Satoshi was active, but damn, Hal must have been involved.

a11y is similar to Andreessen Horowitz => a16z in that there’s exactly 16 letters in between the first letter and the last.

Seems like good acronym semantics no?

NoobSaibot135··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
I’m a big fan of YC, HN, and Garry Tan.

I’d love to support Garry politically to get SF back to its roots and to put math back in schools.

Unfortunately Garry has blocked me on X for no good reason that I can think of?

NoobSaibot135··on Another Roman dodecahedron has been unearthed in England

NoobSaibot135··on YouTube doesn't want to take down scam ads
During the 2nd Starship launch (most recent one),

there were a few scam SpaceX live streams on YouTube where they would play footage of Elon on stage at night from when starship was first unveiled.

The scammers would overlay an AI deep fake of Elon’s voice and push a crypto currency scam!

Those channels were called SpaceXUS or SpaceXLive etc. with legit looking SpaceX logo.

Somehow they managed to gain 1k live followers to boost it in the YouTube algo.

NoobSaibot135··on Intro to Large Language Models [Video]
Here’s another awesome Karpathy lecture from Stanford:

https://youtu.be/XfpMkf4rD6E?si=1_EmuYDFfi7RNEhz

This video is the best for learning attention, specifically where he explains:

Think of attention like a directed graph of vectors passing messages to each other

Keys are what other tokens are communicating to you,

Queries are what you are interested in,

and Values are what you are projecting out yourself.

When you matrix multiply the queries x keys(transposed), you measure the interestingness or affinity between the two.

tech execs are trained to be toned down when in public and the camera is on them(so they don't say something that will make -ve headlines later).

Example:

Elon's recent biography shows that he swears a lot casually while working (as do many of us). You wouldn't glean that from any of his public interviews.

NoobSaibot135··on Cursorless is alien magic from the future
I swear by using Apples external track pad on the left hand side with a TKL mech keyboard in the middle and mouse on the right.

When one hand gets sore, just switch to the other.

I get bad RSI the minute I’m not using this configuration.

NoobSaibot135··on An intuition for logarithms
A potential heuristic for the optimal number of management layers in any company is the base10 log of the total number of employees.

Assuming 1 manager oversees 10 people (then -1 to subtract lowest level of engineers).

Google 190,000 => ~4 levels of managers (5 - 1 = 4)

Apple 164,000 => ~4

etc.

NoobSaibot135··on Daniel Ellsberg has died
>I remember several […]

Same thing happened to me with my boss literally winking sarcastically during a critical argument.

I was enraged to realize that this was how he operated (no wonder he was always heavy into office politics).

This experience reminded me of the opening scene in the movie Training Day when Denzel tested Ethan after they found money under the floor.
