Noctem··on FFMPEG from Zero to Hero
ffmpeg seeks accurately when transcoding. [1] Cutting on non-keyframes when stream copying results in broken video until the next keyframe.

Handbrake does have a CLI. [2] I haven't used it and I'm not sure what advantage it might have over ffmpeg. I personally use mkvmerge or ffmpeg for my muxing/cutting and VapourSynth for encoding.

Noctem··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
Ceasing to publish new copies is different than disallowing the exchange of existing copies. The owner of the IP chose to do the former, eBay chose to do the latter.
Noctem··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
It's bizarre to me that he would describe heroin as a "social lubricant." I've had the misfortune of attempting to socialize with people who were under the influence of heavy opioids and "social lubricant" is not how I would describe their vacant stares or frequent nodding off.
Noctem··on Wikipedia Is Badly Biased
> Wikipedia frequently asserts, in its own voice, that many of Trump’s statements are “false.” Well, perhaps they are. But even if they are, it is not exactly neutral for an encyclopedia article to say so, especially without attribution. You might approve of Wikipedia describing Trump’s incorrect statements as “false,” very well; but then you must admit that you no longer support a policy of neutrality on Wikipedia.

What? No. Objective truth exists and stating it is absolutely not an indication of bias. If Wikipedia is incorrectly referring to his statements as false then those cases should be fixed, but his argument is that it doesn't even matter if these assertions are correct or not.

His "Encyclosphere" is going to be an absolute disaster if it adopts his conception of neutrality as described here. It sounds like he rejects any evaluation of the factuality of the subjects at hand and his preferred standard for inclusion is "some people believe." That sounds like a great way to create a catalog of falsehoods and misinformation.

Noctem··on 'Expert Twitter' Only Goes So Far – Bring Back Blogs
It is entirely possible to curate a Twitter feed of: experts in nearly any subject, gossip, sports, pornography, spiritual guidance, comedy, hate speech, or journalism. The same can be said of bookshelves. It is also possible to consume both excessively or in inappropriate situations. There are young members of my extended family who are regularly scolded for trying to read books during meals.

The rudeness of your guests does not justify passing judgment on millions of people with an almost infinitely broad spectrum of usage patterns, and makes about as much sense as criticizing those who read words on paper.

Noctem··on 'Expert Twitter' Only Goes So Far – Bring Back Blogs
“Drooling scroll zombies” is a wildly and unnecessarily uncharitable description of people that visit websites and apps that you (apparently) don’t enjoy.

Disparaging entire mediums makes little sense. There is both enlightening and mind-numbing content on social networks, blogs, television, and books. Are people that read many books drooling page-turning zombies? Is scrolling through blogs inherently superior to Twitter scrolling?

Noctem··on Show HN: Search code in GitHub repos using regular expressions
I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's very common that I'll be searching for a keyword that only appears in the actual code a handful of times but hundreds of times in tests. GitHub's search is practically useless in those cases.

I almost always just resort to cloning and searching with ripgrep, which can be annoying if I have no other reason to have the codebase on my machine or it's just a one-off.

Noctem··on Do Not Trust Journalists – A Mormon Example
Which RLDS church are you referring to? Because the one most commonly referred to as such (but now known as Community of Christ) has been ordaining women since 1984, and I believe has started recognizing and conducting same-sex marriages (at least in the US, Canada, and Australia) in recent years.
Noctem··on ‘We May Have to Shoot Down This Aircraft’
Wow, I've never heard of that happening. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear a technical explanation of how and why that could occur.
Noctem··on A Guide to Recording 660FPS Video on a $6 Raspberry Pi Camera
What was the lighting setup like for the demo videos? Did you do any processing to reduce flicker?

I get a lot of flickering from CFL and incandescent bulbs in my 240 FPS videos, though I’ve had better results with some LEDs. Considering how much light I’ve needed for good videos at 240 FPS, I’d imagine the lighting requirements at 660-1000 are fairly immense.

Noctem··on Apple Cancels AirPower Product
I don't know who made the decision (or when), but he did have a slide prepared that said "OPEN" [1] in big letters next to a FaceTime screenshot, which I'd assume means the decision was made at least before taking the stage.

Noctem··on Apple Cancels AirPower Product
I appreciate it too, unfortunately Apple is not always so transparent. One example that comes to mind is their 2010 promise to make FaceTime an open standard. It was Steve Jobs that made that promise in 2010 (one year before his death), and apparently a patent dispute with VirnetX may be to blame, but to my knowledge they haven't made any public statements about it since the initial promise.

If legalities are to blame it seems like that would be all the more reason to come out and say something along the lines of: "sorry everyone, we want to keep our promise but stupid software patents have made that impossible." Instead they've (to my knowledge—please correct me if I'm wrong) chosen to remain silent and hoped that people would forget.

Noctem··on Meet Q, a Genderless Voice
It's configurable. For English you can choose Male or Female for American, Australian, British, Irish, and South African accents: https://i.imgur.com/IeJH9wu.png
Noctem··on Yes, You Should Walk Your Cat
I often go on walks with my cat without a leash up the mountain that I live at the base of. She just follows me; occasionally she'll lag behind if something interests her, but she catches up eventually if I just keep walking.
Noctem··on Building a YouTube MP3 Downloader with Exodus, FFmpeg, and AWS Lambda
In their previous tutorial [1] their encoding settings show that they're targeting roughly 128 kb/s VBR, which is what YouTube AACs typically are, so that doesn't explain it. AAC (and Opus for that matter, which YouTube also often has) are superior formats, and lossy encoding should only happen once if possible- so this honestly makes me cringe a bit. In this case the (probably already lossy) source audio is lossily converted by YouTube and then again by ffmpeg/LAME with rather low bitrates at each step. A lot of quality is lost along the way.

Support for Opus is unfortunately still somewhat sparse, but AAC support is essentially universal on modern devicese. So I can't think of any reason to favor this approach over:

  youtube-dl -f bestaudio[ext=m4a] "$URL"
Even YouTube's 128 kb/s copies won't satisfy audiophiles.

Noctem··on Why Create a New Unix Shell?
I really don't understand why they haven't made ZSH the default. It has a much more powerful REPL and a more permissive license.
Noctem··on Pik – a new lossy image format for the internet
The readme mentions "Brunsli (lossless JPEG repacker)" as a related project, but I can't seem to find that anywhere. Has it been released?
Noctem··on Minimal PDF
This page was helpful to me a couple years ago while crafting the tiny PDF used for testing in Homebrew. https://github.com/Homebrew/legacy-homebrew/pull/36606
Noctem··on Ask HN: Why block Tor?
The IP addresses of Tor exit nodes are publicly available.
Noctem··on Video Games Are Changing the Way Soccer Is Played
I'm surprised that you mention lob passes to support your case. While the gameplay footage in trailers may feature them prominently since they're fun to watch, I wouldn't say that the actual game usually rewards playing that way. I rely far more on ground passes in the game than the teams I follow (Manchester United and Real Salt Lake) do in real life since it's so much easier to retain possession that way.
Noctem··on PyCNN: Cellular Neural Networks Image Processing Python Library
Hmm, I wonder if this could be adapted to be a good VapourSynth filter.
Noctem··on Select a document and have it certified in the Bitcoin blockchain
I've seen people post SHA-1s on Twitter for things (like proof of an iOS jailbreak) that they aren't ready to release yet. I suppose this is a more reliable method for that.
Noctem··on Linux is Freaking Weird
This was interesting, though I was expecting (and hoping for) a rundown of often overlooked technical quirks of Linux. Perhaps a more accurate title would be: "Linux Powers Some #@&%ing Weird Things."

To his point, the other day I saw a digital billboard along the freeway that had apparently crashed and was displaying some GRUB output and errors. I would have taken a photo if I hadn't been driving.

Noctem··on DARPA helicopter can feel for the ground below to ensure a safe landing
Wouldn't it be problematic to takeoff from an uneven surface? It seems like it would generate more lift from the side with higher ground and end up taking off diagonally, perhaps crashing in the process. Is there a way to compensate for that?
Noctem··on OS X Command Line Utilities
For the few formulas that create an app bundle (Homebrew deliberately avoids GUIs in general), "brew linkapps" symbolically links the bundle to /Applications; similar to the way it links things from /usr/local/Cellar/$formula/$version/bin to /usr/local/bin.
Noctem··on The Town without Wi-Fi
The existence of government surveillance can't be disproven by a scientist in a lab with some test subjects. EHS has repeatedly been found to be the result of the nocebo effect.

Attempting to discourage views that have been repeatedly invalidated by science is clearly more reasonable than shunning every untestable (or difficult to test) but plausible supposition.

Noctem··on Ask HN: Why are we still not encrypting email?
Perhaps I've misunderstood, but are you saying it's against the law to teach people about encryption in Germany? If so, what law is that?

My understanding was that "with its strict privacy laws, Germany is the refuge of choice for those hounded by the security services." http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/09/berlins-digital...

Noctem··on G is for Google
.xyz is intended to be generic; you're probably thinking of .xxx.
Noctem··on Ask HN: Whats the worst startup idea you've heard, which turned out to be genius?
Came here to say roughly the same thing about Snapchat. I didn't expect it to rise very far above a niche sexting app, and I was surprised when I started seeing a lot of people using it for more innocent purposes.

The concept still doesn't appeal to me as much as a lot of people (though I still use it), but I was clearly wrong about its potential for mass appeal.

Noctem··on Snowden Document Search
I'm most excited about the collection of documents in their GitHub repo. I've casually tried to build my own collection, but most media organizations aren't very good about consistently providing the source documents in an easily downloadable format.
