NoPedantsThanks··on How iTunes Is Changing on PC
Apple's fear of proper I/O strikes again.

Forcing customers to use a shitty JUKEBOX app to manage all the content (including applications) on a handheld Unix computer was embarrassing on day one. But after a decade... and then more... it's offensive to those customers.

Now they made the already-shambolic Windows situation even worse. It's bad enough on Mac, where the videos you shot yourself inexplicably wind up in the "TV" app now. Why the hell would you look in Apple TV for stuff you shot on your phone?

NoPedantsThanks··on High coffee consumption, brain volume and risk of dementia and stroke
So the takeaway is that more than zero but fewer than six cups is better than none or greater than six cups?

We need to know whether this means real cups for the bullshit "cups" commonly used to measure coffee were used in the study.

NoPedantsThanks··on Apple iPod Shuffle USB interface pinout
I love how a couple of its designers downvoted that simple question.
NoPedantsThanks··on Apple iPod Shuffle USB interface pinout
This was really the best design. The metal one that was a big clip.
NoPedantsThanks··on Apple iPod Shuffle USB interface pinout
Is this for the POS one that had no controls at all?
NoPedantsThanks··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
They talk about piracy "services," which is not your normal torrent user presumably. I guess it's Popcorn Time and the like, which makes it somewhat easier for the general populace.
NoPedantsThanks··on Multi-channel Audio Part 2
All the Atmos PR and descriptions talk about "objects," but they never say how those objects' sounds are separated from the others' in the datastream. How can, for example, 56 waveforms be carried independently in one stream?

The use of Atmos in music is just plain bad. How many pop recordings are actually mixed for Atmos? I can't imagine that it's as many as Apple is presenting "in Atmos" on Apple Music. So is there some post-processing BS going on, a la "Q-Sound" and other fake surround over the past few decades?

Here's an example of Atmos messing up music. It's too bad it happens, too, because the Atmos versions of songs seem to be less dynamically compressed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUgfp6mFG2E

NoPedantsThanks··on The FCC wants to criminalize AI robocall spam
What is that?
NoPedantsThanks··on Nasopharyngeal Lymphatics Found to Be Crucial for Cerebrospinal Fluid Outflow
My dad has Parkinson's and has very poor-quality sleep. He also has had anti-snoring surgery in the past, and chronic post-nasal drip (which I also seem to have). This article raises questions in my mind as to whether any of these are related.

Also interesting is this: "researchers were able to successfully modulate cervical lymphatics using phenylephrine (which activates α1-adrenergic receptors, causing smooth-muscle contraction)"

Phenylephrine is the so-called decongestant that has finally been called out for being a fraud in oral medications (and I can tell you from painful, painful experience that it is indeed a fraud). I was surprised to see that it allegedly accomplishes something in this particular application.

NoPedantsThanks··on Tear up unused parking lots, plant trees
The problem is that the removal of parking requirements typically doesn't address the parking-lot scenario depicted here. It's often a developer handout that results in a degraded standard of living for existing residents in the neighborhood around a new development.

Let's say a developer builds a bigger, taller building than what was there previously and adds residents. If they're not required to include sufficient parking, the new cars will flood the surrounding neighborhood, and existing residents will now have no place to park. This depends on the type of neighborhood, of course, but it happened in mine in Chicago. Not being able to just come home and go inside, but rather have to drive around and around in ever-larger circles (in the winter) to look for a parking spot because some alderman got paid off by a developer to screw his constituents... that's the reality.

We're seeing this in L.A. too, where local politicians will sell out to developers and publicly excuse it by pretending that parking creates cars and cars = bad. L.A. is a giant county masquerading as a city, and it's never going to be Amsterdam (you hear this asinine comparison all the time). Pretending that people aren't going to bring cars to their residence is absurd and damaging.

But big vacant parking lots growing weeds? Hell yeah, we have those all over the place, around dying malls and boarded-up Macy's. But what did CA politicians do? Pass laws that allow developers to destroy one single-family home and build 10 units there, overriding any local zoning or review and without local ability to prevent it.

So now we're going to pave over even MORE ground and cut down MORE trees, while said malls are still sitting there. As if the place isn't hot, barren, drought-stricken, and depressing enough.

Anyway, that's what I think of when I hear "get rid of parking requirements:" corrupt sellouts.

NoPedantsThanks··on Block (Square) lays off 800 employees
My organization uses Square for payment processing. I think they've been moribund for some time.

We have a Square card reader (a current one, which reads card chips and NFC), but their own software still doesn't support it. I mean... WTF?

NoPedantsThanks··on Apple Vision Pro review
No video input, no dice.

This thing could have been useful on day one for lots of people, from drone operators to cinematographers to programmers. But Apple's sad fear of I/O has crippled yet another product.

People should expect that a $3500 video-display device has a way to get video into it.

NoPedantsThanks··on Ford's new 48-inch digital dashboard is a lot of Android for one car
Thanks! I don't rely on just the connector, though; that curved piece of plastic against the back of the phone supports most of its weight.

I have to swap the 30-pin cord out for a Lightning connector. I have Apple's 30-pin-to-Lightning adapter, which is the only decent solution to their idiotic removal of the headphone jack because it restores the audio line out and power in at the same time.

It's academic at the moment because I have to pull the engine out of the car to replace the heads; a bunch of Ford engines had a defect where they blow spark plugs out, destroying the hole in the cylinder head.

NoPedantsThanks··on The humble brilliance of Italy's moka coffee pot (2018)
I have one and have tried it quite a few times, being very careful to follow whatever procedure I'd been shown. To me the coffee has always tasted burned. But... I buy much better coffee now.

It is fun and I like the ceremony, so I'm going to check out the video someone linked to above.

All I know is, buying light-roast coffee and a proper burr grinder will change the way you view coffee. I even wrote a little app to calculate the exact amount of water per gram of grounds, and then you can enter the total weight of the vessel (intended for Chemex-style pour-over) and a wet filter. It saves that and then tells you how much the whole thing should weigh when you've added enough water.

NoPedantsThanks··on Why is everything so ugly?
Well now all of a sudden "clutter" is supposed to be in.

This is symptomatic of declining taste across the board... which actually means the trend of celebrating shitty taste, which has always existed in plentitude.

NoPedantsThanks··on Ford's new 48-inch digital dashboard is a lot of Android for one car
'96 Cobra here. The only touchscreen in it is on my phone, for which I built a dock. Nothing else was or is needed.

Relax. He didn't lash out in fury at their existence. He just said he doesn't like their appearance. Did you design it or something?
NoPedantsThanks··on Why is everything so ugly?
When my parents were selling their house, their realtor told them they needed to paint a bunch of stuff grey because "that's what Millennials want."

Now we mock everything grey as "Millennial grey."

NoPedantsThanks··on Why is everything so ugly?
Wow, what a misguided and dumb "solution." If they're going to be that controlling, at least they could have enforced a truly helpful set of aesthetic guidelines.
NoPedantsThanks··on Why is everything so ugly?
The problem with LEDs is the massive increase in light pollution they cause.
NoPedantsThanks··on Silicon Valley insiders are trying to unseat Biden with help from AI
What a monumental waste of whatever they're putting into it. This guy is an absolute zero as a candidate. If he were someone with any pull, charisma, or chance... it would still be a questionable undertaking. But Philips?

Dumb.

NoPedantsThanks··on Tour of new custom M1 macOS runners racks with Christina Warren [video]
"Runners?" I've been working in software development for a long time, and currently write mobile apps... but I've never heard this term.

Now hurry and flag this totally innocuous observation again.

Actually, I thought he was referring to the archaic "tube"-shaped logo itself.

So... my bad, I guess!

NoPedantsThanks··on Boeing needs to get real: the 737 MAX should probably be scrapped
You're simply confirming what I said, including the fact that the previous iterations suffer from the same defect and should be pulled from service.

And nobody is demanding that Boeing redesign the cockpit. This entire fiasco was to cover up an "upward-pitching tendency" under power, which ANY competent pilot could easily account for.

NoPedantsThanks··on Apple's bad faith 27% tax on web purchases
Thanks for the rundown. What's the basis of the perceived annoyance though? What was the district court supposed to do differently?
NoPedantsThanks··on How Monopolists drive the power and wealth divide
"The ability of firms to "price gouge" is evidence of monetary inflation"

Where do you get that? It's far more likely evidence of monopoly/oligopoly power.

NoPedantsThanks··on Boeing needs to get real: the 737 MAX should probably be scrapped
Except you couldn't say HOW it's a mischaracterization.
NoPedantsThanks··on Boeing needs to get real: the 737 MAX should probably be scrapped
What I find disappointing is that media outlets have failed to jump on the fact that, right before all the latest shoddiness was discovered, Boeing requested a safety exemption for another problem with these planes: https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/boein...
NoPedantsThanks··on Apple's bad faith 27% tax on web purchases
"you agree to pay Apple a 27% commission on any purchases made when users click those links, for up to 7 days after the link is clicked."

So if the publisher says, "Click here for a renewal reminder and a 10% discount" and then sends a renewal E-mail on the 8th day, they're in the clear.
