It's not very good semantically either.

NicuCalcea··on When did Google get so weird?
I get why you would want that, but I don't get why you don't get that it might not be the case for others. I love searching and clicking and reading around. Sometimes I read fascinating things about topics I wasn't searching for. I can't imagine a world where all my web searching is done through an annoying chatbot.

Scrollable story, sometimes also referred to as a scrolly. This is a particularly bad example though.
NicuCalcea··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
Surely a person driving 18 people will emit less than each person driving themselves? I can see how dollars can be a proxy for macroeconomic stuff, for example by comparing countries, but it doesn't make much sense for comparing individual units of transport.

I don't understand why we have to do napkin maths to guess what's more polluting. There is countless research showing buses emit less than individual cars per passenger per km, self-driving or not.

And there's no reason buses can't be self-driving as well, if anything, them driving slower, on dedicated lanes and on fixed routes would make it much easier.

NicuCalcea··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
You're counting emissions from a person's breathing as part of the vehicle's emissions?
NicuCalcea··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
Most of the cost comes from paying the drivers, but also cost is a proxy for emmissions?

It would be compatible with life for longer though. A dry sauna can get to 80-100°C, steam rooms are "only" 40-50°C. And subjectively, I can bear it much longer in a typical dry sauna.

NicuCalcea··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
In London, subway cars are either completely separated and you can't travel between them, or it's just one long continuous tube, there are no vestibules. You don't get much signal underground either way, so it's rare to see people on a call.

Most trains however have a space [0] at the end of each car where you enter and exit. That space can also have a toilet, bike storage, various (locked) train controls, sometimes even a few seats [1] where you can sit if your call will be a while.

NicuCalcea··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
There's usually some space between train coaches (I think it's called a gangway?) or at the end of a coach (a vestibule) that is separated from the seats area by doors on both sides. You can take your call there.

A quarter of Americans (and 40% of young Americans) see Mangione favourably, so it definitely is a society thing.

NicuCalcea··on The AI Aesthetic
The sparkle emoji has become an indicator for "this is an AI feature, click here to do AI things". I have even used it.

The beige UI with orange accents probably refers to the design guidelines of Anthropic, Mistral, Microsoft AI and a bunch of other companies. They all try to use soft, non-threatening colours, and for some reason those two are a popular choice.

NicuCalcea··on The AI Aesthetic
I read all of these as being about interacting with AI. It says apps made by AI labs have tiny icons, not that AI-generated apps have tiny icons.
NicuCalcea··on Our position on open-weights models
The fact that much of the world is as unconcerned with the interests of the US as with those of China, if not less so, should give pause to Americans.

As a citizen of neither country, Chinese open models are in my interest more than US closed models. My only concerns is that if/when Chinese AI becomes more powerful, they too will have little incentive to make their best models open weights.

I'll give it another go, I found it buggy last time I checked, but that was a while ago.
NicuCalcea··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
You can sync your vault between devices, but what's the point if the clients on those devices don't support passkeys? As far as I know, no KeePass app on Android has mature passkey support. That's not even mentioning more niche cases, like what if I want to log into a website in a browser on my TV? The cool thing about passwords is that they work on any device.

Also, remember when one of the maintainers of the passkey standard warned that KeePassXC users would get blocked by relying parties [0]? Would you allow tech companies to determine what password manager you are allowed to use?

NicuCalcea··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
Maybe it is easy to explain, but passkey promoters have clearly failed to do it. I don't think a single person I know in real life uses one.
