Nicook··on We Rarely Lose Technology (2023)
Even if you want to stick with a western history based narrative, you can go back to the bronze age collapse before that. See ancient greek writing about how each progressive age gets worse (golden -> silver -> bronze -> heroic -> iron) .

Lost tech in China is pretty fascinating. There's archeological evidence of very advanced clocks that predate similar European ones, but they seem to have lost the knowledge on how to build it with the builder (City was conquered, clock was dismantled, his son was unable to reconstruct it). Meanwhile euros were able to push their knowledge forward more or less uninterrupted from the middle ages on.

Seems pretty clear to me that we could easily lose a bunch of knowledge again. Could even argue we're very close.

Nicook··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
Also fits in very well to amazon's famously low average tenure/ hiring practices.
Nicook··on Court records reveal Sig Sauer knew of pistol risks for years
Arguing with such a politically loaded sentence is probably a waste of time. BUT that's obviously not the intention of the quote. Actual malfunction induced firing is the exception, and its still a good saying to help people try and be safe/mindful. Not to mention even in that case there's still some movement or action leading to it nobody is saying that the sigs will just spontaneously fire while left sitting on a table.

Nicook··on US Wholesale Inflation Rises by Most in 3 Years
There are plenty of indicators, not like its an exact science. Can trust the government one to be always under-reported, the incentive is obvious. I'm a fan of gold prices for longer periods of time.
Nicook··on GitHub was having issues
I mean you can always work around it with the correct permissions right.
Nicook··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
one of the good ones right
Nicook··on Historical Tech Tree
upstream of what? Did you not look for mesopotamian or egyptian writing, which predate chinese writing by thousands of years. This sounds more like a chinese bias lol.
Nicook··on Historical Tech Tree
this is why Mesopotamian and Egyptian writing are upstream of so much.

If you want to go commit a violent crime, and have motorized transport, and not be caught. Then it is helpful to have a vehicle that is not tied to you.

Nicook··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
I use patreon for ones I care about. And many of the niche interests I'm interested in are demonetized anyways which is the crux of the issue.
Nicook··on Games Look Bad: HDR and Tone Mapping
Out of curiosity do you not get immersed in books?
Nicook··on Games Look Bad: HDR and Tone Mapping (2017)
given the rest of the games listed I assume he means baldurs gate 3. Many younger people out themselves by just calling it baldurs gate.
Nicook··on Two narratives about AI
>The industry is trying to push errors leftwards.

Is this true? Most software devs would like to. But I think business is more interested in spee which pushes errors to the right. Which seems to be more profitable in most software. Even stuff thats been around for a decade(s).

Nicook··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
Its encrapification is real. It has been slow though, mostly affecting niche interests and smaller creators. And the ad experience has definitely gotten worse, but adblockers help. Try using youtube without and adblocker.
Nicook··on Self-taught engineers often outperform (2024)
not all self taught are curious, at least recent batches.
Nicook··on Random selection is necessary to create stable meritocratic institutions
Article suffers a bit from the common hackernews intellectual bias.
Nicook··on Random selection is necessary to create stable meritocratic institutions
that's true, but are you trying to measure people's ability to study for the test?
Nicook··on The death of partying in the USA
and less children per woman. I figure thats got to be the main driver. China actually a really good case study with the one child policy and rise of little kings.

Nicook··on XBOW, an autonomous penetration tester, has reached the top spot on HackerOne
Open source maintainers have been complaining about this for a while. https://sethmlarson.dev/slop-security-reports. I'm assuming the proliferation of AI will have some significant changes on/already has had for open source projects.
Nicook··on The Bitter Lesson is coming for Tokenization

Nicook··on Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time
I contend there is a significant difference between a stupid hack, and a better one. The negative adjective is meaningful in the comment.
Nicook··on Defending adverbs exuberantly if conditionally
Flashbacks to my driver's ed teacher in highschool who would say adverbs correctly then correct himself by saying it again without the -ly. This drove me insane. And no I haven't noticed this generally in US english speakers. I would assume some negative things about people who drop the -ly from adverbs.
Nicook··on The Pilgrim as a Historian
You're basically reaffirming that religions and religiosity change a lot over time. As faith waxes (no matter the religion) more will go on pilgrimages. I think historic holy sites are rad personally, even though I am not currently religious.
Nicook··on A Vanishing World: On Europe's Disappearing Peasantry
Most likely food and exercise related. Feel like guy above you is basically alter ego me. In most cases sophisticated healthcare and medicine is more about fixing problems than staying healthy imo.

Am also ex-Amazon. Made good money there, which I am grateful for, but definitely didn't emerge healthier.
