A constant lurker on Hacker News. I am passionate about Linux, open source movement, Python and good development. Have a niggling affection for the JavaScript world also.
The fact that you still cannot do side by side diffs on pull requests makes it a less than useful code review tool.
Although we all know that searches are by no means stateless, they were separate, unrelated questions in my mind previous to this. This makes searching more like a conversation (hence the name) and means that the UI to me does not fit this style. There is no record of what you searched before this.
Imagine if your chat client was displayed in the same context. Google is only including it in this way so that it gets the huge usage of its search engine, but to me a more chatty UI would make this more obvious.
Its included as part of the bash-completion package on most distributions of linux.
Its got extremely good completion support for hostnames
It has the added advantage of also auto-completing for scp.
I have been using it as a direct replacement for git log, and its something that gets installed on any system I work on for any length of time.
This is one thing that really infuriates me about new android devices. Their lack of syncing support with linux boxes.
Does anyone know if this support is something that can be backported to 12.04?
I have gone from facebook for coming up on two years, but I see some of the pictures posted on my girlfriends feed. A good portion (she is a college student) are pictures of fairly messy nights out.
Even if its not toilet pictures, a picture of a drunk, scantily clad teenager may not look any better, and these pictures dominate facebook. At least the feeds of young people that I know.
I can see it being a disaster in some cases, but I see it as a huge plus in another section.
Dropbox is just about ubiquitous enough for this to be useful.
Even if the glass was to be reduced to a $1000 product, I still feel that a lot of people would find that sort of luxury product a little over their price point.
We know so little about the watch (down to its very existence) however you would expect the price point to be similar to other smart watches which are in and around $100. If this was the case, the smaller amount of uses of a $100 device out trumps the virtues of a $1000 device for the vast majority of budget users.
I will happily write said script. Google aim's at the thousands but I feel they are in danger of neglecting the fact that people who want features like this make services like this popular i.e the tech community are early adopters and they generally recommend tools (especially tools like this) to their less tech savvy friends. Cater in a small way (you still need your swanky android apps and colors) for the hardcore tech, and you add users.
But it appears that they are targeting a light weight evernote replacement. A killer feature for me on this would be a command line binary which calls up my $EDITOR and allows me to write a note immediately and have them synced immediately. This, with the power of lighter production of notes on mobile devices could find a place into my workflow.
This has proved quite useful and has got rid of a lot of the pain points I had with these sort of services before.
Apologies.
I found that this was not useful at all. My three main consumptions are: -> Work Computer -> Tablet and phone -> Home computer
The tabs on my work computer are almost always not relevant for when I am at home and on tablet phone. There is also certain cases where I would not particularly want my tabs from my work machine (sensitive information perhaps) shared to my home computer or a mobile device I could get stolen and vice versa.
For any sharing of tabs I want, I just use pocket, as the tabs I really want to share are usually just articles that I want to read, either way pocket will take those links.
Would it not be more secure and safer to render this on some sort of local page?
Don't really see the need for this information to go to a third party server.
This is obviously purely theoretical, but would bring the ubiquity of Android to a whole host of new machines if used in a desktop context. That would make the whole experience quite interesting and exciting.
The idea of a young person beginning to code and polishing their application and uploading and getting some money in donations. I'm more likely to donate to a great attempt at a project by a young person than I am to buy software on Linux. Raspberry Pi Store could have been the communities push to loads of great community driven open source projects.
One comment I would make is regarding this, "I knew that the Nexus 7 was really working for me when I gave mine to my father as a spontaneous gift while he was visiting, then missed it sorely when waiting for the replacement to arrive.". I know that Jeff is above my pay bracket, but even still, this makes me wonder what sort of money stream this is, if he can simply hand away Nexus 7's. I earn a respectful living but that sort of money is still substantial enough that I can't afford to simply give one away.
I have no real affection for scratch, but I feel that he was making the argument that children should learn to program in an environment that models (at least to a point) the one in which a developer develops in, at least with regard to language preference.
I feel at this point, the language choice (barring ease of use etc) is pointless. Whether you use scratch, python or Haskell, if it piques the interest of a child, then nothing will stand in the way if that student wants to go on and learn every programming language available.
If you think of the first language you ever learned, and what you are now programming in. For me, my first language (a type of kiddy basic) gave me what I needed. A concept of execution flow. How to make things come up on the screen, basic 2d programming and it made it very easy to make some GUI based stuff.
My point is that don't hate any language (even if it is a fake language like Scratch) if it builds the initial building blocks in a child (or adults) head.
Also Marco says at one point about the six different versions of the macbook pro for only 3 different size points. Is this a sign of the Jobs touch being lost?
The iPad mini is different in that the Nexus 7 was the first sub ipad size tablet to make a mark before Apple. This won't make a huge difference to mini sales, but it does reek off Apple chasing tails.
One real usage that is invaluable for me, is the fact that the config is used for SVP also. This saves a lot of typing.
With a key based login set up, copying files to a server is a matter of
scp file dev:~/
Immediately when I create an app like this using this, I have clicked to include libraries. How does this import only the things that I want.
This is not a huge problem by any means, it just jarred me a little.
This could be a little daunting to someone who doesn't understand how this is happening.
