Nevin1901··on Show HN: Swift Mail. Fastmail's modern mail standard delivered natively on macOS
I would be happy to pay $10 for this but definitely not a monthly subscription when Mail.app is free.
Nevin1901··on Fly.io has GPUs now
How fast are coldstarts, and how do you compare against other gpu providers (runpod modal etc)
Nevin1901··on The Source of Europe's Mild Climate
Has the author ever been to The Netherlands. I wouldn’t consider that climate “mild”
Nevin1901··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
I implemented these changes over the course of a few months. I was so sick of being sleep deprived I eventually optimized my sleep.
Nevin1901··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
I thought I always felt tired. Until I got a sleep mask, ear plugs, stopped eating 4 hours before bed, slept in a cold room, and went to bed at the same time every night. I found my body just adjusted itself back to its natural rhythm. Curious how many of the contestants surveyed did exactly this and still had trouble with their sleep.

Edit: diet and general lifestyle changes (such as going to the gym and being outside) also helped.

Nevin1901··on Americans are fake and the Dutch are rude (2022)
As someone who recently moved from The Netherlands to USA, I found this article to be really great at explaining the reason why many Europeans find Americans to be fake. I myself had experienced all of the social experiences the author talked about, and found myself confused as to what a "friend" was in The USA. I also find it very interesting how the author described emotions as cultured - not just something which was the same to everyone.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts and experiences with different cultures.

Nevin1901··on Ask HN: How would you take care of your mental well-being?
I would choose neither. I'll personally deal with my problems myself, and I find that most of the time a few hours of being present and doing nothing helps improve my mental state by a ton.
Nevin1901··on StackOverflow questions down 66% in 2023 when compared to 2020
Not sure if GPT is the reason stack overflow is declining, but I always liked how I can get really specific help from chatgpt. I can ask it: how exactly can I do x, and it will answer. You don't always find that on stack overflow or reddit.
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
I'm currently taking a break from working on anything. Just doing the bare minimum to get A's in college, and relaxing the rest of the time. Don't regret it after working so much before.
Nevin1901··on SQL as API
I implemented something like this for a log platform I was working on. The user would write queries in Apache lucene, and they would be converted into json, and then a specific sql query.

It worked nice, but apart from querying logs, I don’t see a use case where one would do this rather than just creating api endpoints.

Nevin1901··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
No, I work on an m2 MacBook Air with a trackpad and the built in keyboard
Nevin1901··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
Not a tiling window manager, but the arc browser does this very well.
Nevin1901··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
In my personal experience, tiling window managers only work when you have a lot of screen real estate. I tried using yabai on a 13 inch m2 air, but I ended up going back to my normal workflow of just alt tabbing between windows. Most apps don’t let you see enough content when they are tiled (because of gui elements such as sidebar etc). I do love the “focus on hover” feature of yabai though. I wish macOS had that natively.
Nevin1901··on Extracting training data from ChatGPT
How can they be so sure the model isn’t just hallucinating? It can also hallucinate real facts from the training data. However, that doesn’t mean the entire output is directly from the training data. Also, is there any real world use case? I couldn’t think of a case where this would be able to extract something meaningful and relevant to what the attackers were trying to accomplish.
Nevin1901··on Google admits cracking down on people using ad blockers
Over the past few months I’ve stopped using YouTube all together. The service is pretty bad without an ad blocker, and I wouldn’t pay $10 per month just to waste my time.
Nevin1901··on Practical Tips for Finetuning LLMs Using LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation)
I fine tuned LLama-2 on code/comment generation (in python) for around $2 and was able to run it natively on an m1 macbook air. I can totally see smaller fine tuned LLM's being used locally on consumer devices in the future. I think people underestimate how cheap and efficient this stuff is.

I've actually built a service which lets you fine tune LLama-2/other llms by uploading a JSON dataset. I'm looking for feedback, the link is https://useftn.com.

Nevin1901··on Fast and Portable Llama2 Inference on the Heterogeneous Edge
How would wasm/rust be more performant over c++? I’m not sure the wasm version can take advantage of avx/metal.

Edit: the wasm installer does take advantage by installing plugins.

Unless you’re talking about performance on devices where those two weren’t a thing anyways.

Nevin1901··on Ruffle: Flash Player Emulator
Is there a website where I can play old flash games using ruffle?
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: How do you track NLP models in prod?
Exactly my question. I just scanned over the inputs and outputs and compared how "useful" they were.
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: How do you track NLP models in prod?
Causal text generation. I evaluated it on my own internal dataset but real world data shifts over time.
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
What didn't you like about any of the other companies?
Nevin1901··on Stable LM 3B: Bringing Sustainable, High-Performance LMs to Smart Devices
Same as OpenAI, where it's either a json or jsonl file with {"input": "text", "output": "text"}
Nevin1901··on Stable LM 3B: Bringing Sustainable, High-Performance LMs to Smart Devices
I’m developing a service just for that. It’s called https://useftn.com and it’ll fine tune models off your json formatted dataset.
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents?
Currently not but I'm actively working on that feature. For now if the costs are getting too high, you can just stop training and we'll export the last saved checkpoint.
Nevin1901··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents?
I'm building a service called https://useftn.com which allows people to do exactly that. You just upload your dataset and we'll fine tune Llama 2-7B for you on that data. The model works with huggingface and all of the mainstream nlp frameworks.

It's in its really early stages right now (mainly just looking to learn/help people), so if you have your data in a specific format I'll be happy to code something up to make it work with your data.

(Also Disclaimer: I own this service)

Nevin1901··on I love building a startup in Rust but wouldn't pick it again
For apps where performance is key, I found you can get by using go for an MVP. Apart from the spikes in cou usage because of the garbage collector, go is fast and allows you to iterate quickly.
Nevin1901··on Show HN: Log collector that runs on a $4 VPS
That's really cool. I might rewrite some of your code in go and use it in erlog for searching (and give you credit of course).

How did you come up with the idea for jlq? It seems like it solved a pretty cool use case.

Nevin1901··on Show HN: Log collector that runs on a $4 VPS
One of my eventual goals with erlog is actually doing observability (eg: it'll send you reports if logs/metrics deviate from the norm), so it's really interesting to see you had this problem.
Nevin1901··on Show HN: Log collector that runs on a $4 VPS
That's a really good idea, thanks for suggesting it. I'll try implementing it. I'm hoping the main bottleneck is with inserting the logs into SQLite, so using a spool might help
Nevin1901··on Rogue geoengineering startup attempts to affect atmosphere despite warnings
He should have the freedom to try, but if this ends up damaging the atmosphere in any measurable way, both him his company should be on the hook.

Unfortunately what I think will happen is this startup will release a ton of pollutants into the air, and nobody will be held responsible.
