Neputys··on Telling the whole truth in a post-truth environment
Sorry, but using such terms as "Populism, the backlash against globalization" is exactly what I call "deliberate misrepresentation of the facts and realities".
Neputys··on A prototype of a decentralized political party
ouch, dat STRETCH ;)
Neputys··on A prototype of a decentralized political party
What a marvelously ignorant idea. Why is it so hard to understand that there will be no magic machine that will allow you to live happily ever after without need to think.
Neputys··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
As I've said, there are legit reasons, but my point was that they are being abused too often and this will have consequences.
Neputys··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
Technical, financial, organisational, etc. yes, but almost the whole point of creativity is being able to come up with something original, new. If you don't you don't get paid or in this case you don't get paid for long. That's just how things work. I personally find it very sad, that a huge amount of (willing!!!) copy cats call them selves creatives and then somebody calls the whole misguided charade fashion.

edit: just in case - I hope this doesn't offend you, somebody=everybody, I didn't mean anything personal

Neputys··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
I'd add one more thing - if you look at it closer, web designers never tried or managed to be properly original and diverse. There was always some sort of "magical guidelines" that made everything look in essence the same. Everyone was/is copying everyone else and getting paid for it. I think this has to end sooner or later and template popularity is one of the signs that real value of things is being better recognized.
Neputys··on Most violence in the world is motivated by moral sentiments
Yes, this is an old completely classical idea. No one can psychologically bare the thought that they are doing something really wrong and get motivated by it. We are defined by what we think is right. That's why true sadism always requires a layer of sentimentality. It's a little strange to see this so "rediscovered".
Neputys··on Most violence in the world is motivated by moral sentiments
Maybe that's just me, but latest hiccups sometimes look suspiciously like an attempt to turn this trend around.

Nice nickname btw. Is it from Captain Grant's Children?

Neputys··on Implausible Hypothetical Eastern European App
Hard to say if it was intended or not. But observe how this shifts the discussion towards some sort of "outsiders". Nobody here is to blame and the life is beautiful again.

Neputys··on Airbnb CEO: Designers Deserve Respect Like Engineers
Same thing goes for Engineers
Neputys··on Anatomy of a Native Feeling HTML5 iOS App
iOS is about detail. Especially the "feeling".
Neputys··on Giles Bowkett: You Fuckers Are Adorable
Insightful I'd say. There are quite a few individuals in startup space these days who are kind of innocently/ignorantly parasitic towards people who do actual work. And it's not a problem of parasites to say no.
Neputys··on Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine
Big -1 to Moleskine. Such a brand and partnering with some tech whatever.
Neputys··on Design is becoming a competitive advantage for startups
...The use of that last phrase, “style over substance” has always been, as Oscar Wilde observed, a marvellous and instant indicator of a fool. For those who perceive a separation between the two have either not lived, thought, read or experienced the world with any degree of insight, imagination or connective intelligence...

Neputys··on The “designers should code” bullshit and a not so new idea
The actual problem is that many designers just don't understand how things work in general. They just "do some pictures"... Then ofc they get this "learn to code" line.

But I can say the same about programmers when it comes to design.

This is something that needs effort from both sides if you care about final result

Neputys··on Does design really matter for startups?
But what you are saying is - let's just have "some design". Like nice background pattern or smth. Sorry but I so disagree with this. In case of mentioned sites it would be a major fail. And btw I'm a designer too...
Neputys··on Does design really matter for startups?
Big mistake here... a huge one actually... HN and Stack Overflow have the _right_ kind of design because in one way or another it appeals to readers. Author is clearly not a tech guy, he doesn't understand that appeal and lightheartedly makes a very misleading statement.

If you are working on your startup think what "sort" of design you should have first. Imagine if Graham would make HN in fashion website style and vice versa.

Neputys··on Building a Startup: 12 Priceless Tools for Launching Your MVP
Good design is valued for it's impact. In other words it sells. Products, services and most importantly ideas. The thing that bothers me most is that people completely miss this point. They just want to order "some design". Witch is completely useless no matter how much u pay. Services like 99designs encourage this behavior in "designers" as well as clients. Or maybe it's better to say that they exploit it. There's nothing good about this, especially for clients.
Neputys··on Building a Startup: 12 Priceless Tools for Launching Your MVP
Thank you for having brains. (designer)
Neputys··on Building a Startup: 12 Priceless Tools for Launching Your MVP
There's no such thing as fast cheap good quality. 99designs is a place for people who don't know that or think they will somehow win the lottery...
Neputys··on A favicon? That’ll be £585 please.
Let's do it this way - if I'll make you 50 pixel perfect fav icons in a day you pay me £100 for each one. OK? (It's a huge discount...)

Have you heard the "make my logo bigger pills" joke about marketers?
Neputys··on Best of Design 2010
well maybe fridge magnets have awesome aesthetic sensibilities and you write beautiful code? ;)
Neputys··on Ask HN: How long did it take to get a good amount of users visiting your site?
You are welcome. neputys at gmail dot com can't promise much but I'll help if I'll be able to
Neputys··on Ask HN: How long did it take to get a good amount of users visiting your site?
It's all just scientific poking :) but I'd try for example to address the audience instead of describing app it self. Now you have "Twitter Machine - tool packed with features" so maybe just "tool for Twitter stars" or something like it would work better. What you should understand is that you are basically trying to get people to pay for using Twitter :) so you have to be talking with hardcore users and providing some solid arguments.

Hypothetical but I hope it helps :)

Neputys··on Ask HN: How long did it take to get a good amount of users visiting your site?
Off topic but I like your app and it looks to me like you can be loosing significant amount of first time visitors (How big is your bounce rate on homepage?) so I'll write it anyway.

Try some A/B testing with copy and amount of info (3 main blocks instead of 6... write not about what app does, but about what I don't need to do if I use it and so on). Now I see that it's something nice, well made and can be useful but it takes effort to actually understand it while it should be obvious.

It's hard to describe. I just think that this is a bigger problem because of conversion. (I'm a UX designer :))

Neputys··on Run-of-the-mill startup seeks mediocre designer
The only interesting job posting in years. Whether it's a joke or not they are pretty accurate in a cynically funny way.
