NearAP··on Startups Are Scooping Up Big Tech’s Cast-Off Workers
You can't necessarily reach that conclusion.

Big tech employs more people than startups, which means it's more likely for someone to get a job at big tech than a startup. It's just a law of numbers and has nothing to do with whether they're suited for startup life or big tech life.

In addition, in the US, foreign students who just graduated are more likely to get a job at big tech than startup because more big tech sponsor H1B/Green card than startups. And the fear/circumstances around losing your immigration status means more of them might opt for big-tech than startup

NearAP··on The clever reason scammers can’t spell (2019)
>> because they actually are from (e.g.)Nigeria and really do have poor English.

This isn't true. English is Nigeria's official language (all Education is in English) and people generally speak English well. Secondly, folks from Nigeria actually use the gist of the article as a flag for filtering out scam i.e. once they open an email with bad grammar, they automatically assume it's scam and ignore it.

NearAP··on FiveThirtyEight 2022 Election Forecast
My apologies if I misunderstood your statement but I interpret it to mean that you're skeptical that Biden received a large number of votes compared to Obama.

If my interpretation is correct, then I think you're missing the big factor that conservatives and registered Republicans actively campaigned for Biden. They didn't just reject Trump, they explicitly said they were voting Biden, Campaigned for him, asked their fellow GOP members to vote Biden over Trump.

At the end of the day, you had Democrats + Independents + Conservatives voting Biden. That coalition didn't exist during Obama's time. In fact, the people who most likely voted for Romney were the people who were now voting for Biden

NearAP··on Twitter Notes
>> Twitter's ad targeting depends on knowing what a user looks at

But they can track which tweets are being clicked, the IP of the person and a whole bunch of things even when you're not logged in.

>> and how their network of connections/follows

But that's the problem right there. If you force people to create an account to read tweets, they might do so but they won't follow anybody or follow very few people and tweet quite infrequently. I just don't think it's feasible to expect a significant number of people (like say # of users on Facebook) to be tweeting regularly. But it's possible that I'm wrong.

NearAP··on Twitter Notes
While it's all well and good to launch new features, I think Twitter should improve their existing service and I'm referring to low hanging fruits.

I don't understand the rationale behind cutting me off while I'm scrolling through Twitter simply because I'm not logged in. Twitter can still display Ads to me irrespective of whether I'm logged in or not. In fact cutting me off means I leave Twitter which means I don't see the Ads they're selling which in turn means less Ad money for them.

Even when logged in, Twitter will display the new message/note icon. When I click on it to read the notification, it turns out to be Twitter telling me to turn on notifications. Now normally, once you have read the message, the 'new' message/note icon is cleared. Instead Twitter displays it again almost immediately and this then goes on for the next few hours before they stop.

If they can't fix these simple things, why would someone want to read longer content on Twitter. They would still get cut off again as Twitter is doing for existing tweets

NearAP··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
ahh, you're right. I went back and compared the specs [1] and the battery is the biggest difference. Somehow, the marketing I always came across was for iPhone 13 and the Pro. Don't believe I saw marketing for the mini. Cellphone providers I checked (when I thought about upgrading) didn't have the mini (12 or 13) upfront and center on their home page.

>> It's pretty easy to build an echo chamber that agrees smaller phones are preferred and make it appear as though there's a decent amount of us, but the simple fact is, people like us are in the minority, and it shows in the iPhone sales.

I'm not sure about that. This could be due to the marketing/positioning i.e. Apple first switched to producing bigger phones (with more features/power) which caused people to buy these bigger phones (there were no smaller & newer phones).

After some complaints, Apple produced a smaller version of their phone but they market it as one with less features (smaller battery, smaller processor, etc).

If Apple devoted resources to producing smaller sized phones with comparable features as the Pro, the statistics might be different. To be clear, a larger phone will always have some edge but the minis should not be clearly designed as a step down version phone

NearAP··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
This resonates with me (I'm an iPhone user).

Never been a fan of the large phones which was why I held on to my iPhone 6S for a very long time (compared to how frequently folks upgrade) before finally upgrading to an iPhone 12 mini (when I ran out of space on the 6S).

NearAP··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
yes, that makes sense for your use case i.e. you're not 'interested' in subscribing in general but you only want to watch a specific show.

For me, if I want to get the package (in general and not for a specific instance), I'd rather pay upfront (so far as it's not expensive) than the monthly subscription. Psychologically, I feel like - 'I just eat the cost and I'm done'. So I'd rather just pay you $100 for the entire year or say $60 for the entire year of Sirius XM than a monthly thing.

NearAP··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
I agree.

- I recently realized I had only turned on my TV just about 4 - 5 times in about 6 months and yet I was paying close to $140 per month, so I downgraded my cable subscription to the minimal (combined cable & internet is cheaper than only internet).

- Also realized I rarely watched Netflix (hadn't watched in months) cos I no longer found shows that I liked and I was paying $15.49 per month. And then I saw HBO Max was $9.99 a month. So I canceled Netflix and signed on to HBO Max. There's also the psychological part that HBO Max allows me to pay for the whole year upfront (Netflix doesn't) so I can close my eyes and just pay them $100 and be done with it.

- I also realized I rarely have time to watch long form content except for weekends. This is one advantage that Amazon Prime has - apart from it being 'free' to me since I already paid for prime, I can rent movies for $2.99 for those few times that I need to be 'entertained'. Maybe I spend $6 in one month and $0 in others. It's still better than $15.49 (or $140) without watching at all.

- It's possible that lots of people have a variation of these reasons. I understand that Netflix had to raise their prices given how much they were spending on content. It looks to me like they 'overspent' on content without taking into consideration that they would have to recoup the cost from increased subscription fees and this might not be palatable to their members given that there are now multiple alternatives

>> And that the Democratic party wants a path to full citizenship for anyone who manages to stay in the country long enough.<<

Full path to citizenship is for those who 'were brought as kids/infants' i.e. who had no say in how they came into the country. If they are still minors and need their parents, then some 'form of stay' for their parents.

If you cross the border illegally as an adult and barring any special circumstances, you will most likely be deported. It would also be difficult to get a professional job since a lot of companies participate in the eVerify program.

NearAP··on Why does NBC make it so difficult to watch the Olympics?
How is this 'so much whinging? He clearly explains what his pain is and also adds the fact that maybe NBC did not optimize for him. He further adds that even for the people NBC is optimizing for, he thinks (his own opinion) that those people might not be best served by this approach.
NearAP··on Getting to the Product Manager interview stage
1) I agree with the overall thrust of listing achievements instead of just generic duties. However I would say that it can be difficult to do in some instances and so shouldn't be taken as dogma. It's even more difficult to do when you work in very large enterprises (where there are multiple layers of management and you own a very small bit but you do it exceedingly well)

2) I disagree with the listing of job title unless it's generic i.e. instead of 'Senior Product Manager', I think hiring managers should instead expect 'Product Manager'. This is important because titles differ wildly across companies. I have seen a large number of companies (especially startups) title a job as 'Director Product Management' or 'Head of Product' but the requirement is looking for someone with 3+ years of experience. In some other companies, a 'Director' must have multiple reports including a manager of others reporting to them while in others a Director is an Individual Contributor. Blend (the FinTech company) has an article on this - [a]

3) Unfortunately, companies (including Recruiters) still filter by Name brand schools (unless you have some exceptional public profile) so putting your brand name school at the top still looks good. If LinkedIn generates your resume, it will put your school at the top.

NearAP··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
According to the article, this event has been happening almost weekly for years

1) Does this mean the developers did not take this into consideration and have a plan on how to deal with this or handle it?

2) Does it mean the folks buying the apartments (or renting) did not do their due diligence and find out this is a weekly event?

Takeaways here (for all of us reading this story) - do you research before you move to a place (rent or buy). Go there on a weekday and a weekend. Ask current residents about the place or other folks who live nearby about the place. It will save you a ton of hassle later on.

NearAP··on Launch HN: Procoto (YC W21) – Procurement SaaS for SMB
Hi,

I'm still not quite clear on what service you're offering.

Are you saying you will help me find the right vendor for certain services/procurement needs that I would have as a company? For example, instead of me having a contract with Office Depot to supply all of my 'Office Supplies' purchases at X dollar, you would recommend for me another supplier who would do the same for lower figure? Same thing for service vendors?

Do you also handle systems/software for the individual employees to buy stuff against those contracts?

NearAP··on Ask HN: What are options/What can one do about Xfinity
Been an Xfinity customer (Comcast) for multiple years with the cable/internet package. Even though I sign a contract (1 or 2 years), fees go up almost every quarter (between 5 - 10 dollars) and the argument is that these are not the cost of the core service. I have checked and these are not taxes being demanded of them by state or county.

This practice seems to be common in all their markets.

What are the options here? Switch to another provider? Government should look into this? What?

NearAP··on Uber shuts down app that told drivers if Uber underpaid them
This is not surprising. Using 'Uber' in the name is trying to build off their brand which big companies will not allow. This is the reason why companies that allow you to build apps for their platform will have rules that say - you should not include the company name in your App.

Someone posted here on Hacker News how Android sued him for his app for making use of the name 'droid' (i think) or something close to the logo (can't remember the exact details and can't find the post)

NearAP··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
This sounds like this job was done by consultants (could have been Oracle consultants too) and this is standard behavior across consultants (that doesn't make it right though).

Oracle as a product company (applies to all Enterprise Product companies) will not charge separately for a customization.

NearAP··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August

That UI looks like a very old version of the software (kind of like when you still had stuff like Oracle Forms or whatever it was called). Oracle UIs (since they launched Fusion) look different (I think they are now all web-based)

NearAP··on NYT reporter falsely accuses tech investor of using a slur

You don't have to be rude. I have engaged in a polite conversation with you.

>>And then comes the double standards <<<

Yes, you can argue that Twitter exhibits double standards in some instances. But it has nothing to do with the original debate you and I were having which is - what was the reason Greenwald's article was not published.

Also, Trump's tax returns were not hacked. They were provided (though without his knowledge) by someone who had legal access to it (like Mary Trump and she did say she provided it) but again you can argue a double standard.

His wife's phone conversations were not hacked. One of the participants in the call recorded it and released it (and the state she was in allows one participant to record a call)
