Nbox9··on The first atomic bomb created ‘forbidden’ quasicrystal
I am not a physicists.

I wonder if those properties would not be uniform across the quasicrystal because of it’s non-repeating pattern.

Nbox9··on Study: Global plant growth surging alongside carbon dioxide (2017)
We’ve known about this effect for awhile. Tree growth has increased on volume but decreased in density since the industrial revolution[0]. A small bump in plant growth can not be seen as anything but the smallest of a silver lining.

Nbox9··on Cyberpunk derivatives
So many of these genres are applied to works long after they have been completed. For example, The Flintstones are labeled as stonepunk, even though it originally aired in the early 60s.
Nbox9··on Confessions of a serial startup software developer
> What are the odds you actually land that 1/250 that has a great exit? Less than one in a thousand.

I’m sorry, but assuming you land in a random startup the odds of landing in the 1/250 would be one out of two hundred and fifty. There are other factors, but saying the odds are <1/1000 requires more justification.

Banks loan money, and every loan includes some risk. If banks didn’t take on risk than the 2007/2008 bailouts wouldn’t have happened.
Nbox9··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
In my opinion living in Seattle is $200k-$300k better than living in Tacoma.
Nbox9··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
It’s mostly me having a programmable thermostat, taking full advantage of free food, and having negligible transportation costs.
Nbox9··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
I work for another company that is going to do a partial return to office. I will be looking at options for companies that offer full in person office (or 90% in person office) after things settle down. I have worked full remote for a total of 5 years of my career, and I believe working in the office is a competitive advantage.

* Overhearing hallway conversations (and joining them) helps spawn invocation.

* I often do/did paired programming, and over-the-shoulder code reviews. These are easier in person

* Having a workforce socially close improves productivity because everyone wants to step up for each other.

* Being seen by my fellow employees helps keep me from becoming distracted.

* Working at the office helps prevent home life from being distracting during work hours.

There are some personal benefits I enjoy from being in the office.

* I save money by spending less on food, drinks, and electricity.

* I enjoy the routine.

* I had a stronger work/life separation. I rarely turned on my work laptop at home.

Nbox9··on Five Oregon counties vote to leave state, create 'Greater Idaho'
Land mass is a dog whistle for agriculture, which has a disproportion amount of political power because of the necessity of keeping grocery stores stocked.
Nbox9··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
They are not the same, but they are institutions with a lot of similarities (NSA, CDC, NASA, IRS). They largely receive funding the same way, and are answerable to the same people (congress, White House). There is some similarities to how the heads of these organizations are determined and how the heads of these organizations are fired.

In startup speak the organizations have the same VC and share many board members.

Nbox9··on Consumer Prices in U.S. Increase by Most Since 2009

Nbox9··on Ask HN: Moving from a product org to a consulting org: What should I know?
The biggest requirement of solo consulting is being able to get clients on your own. The quality of your clients will directly result in how successful you are. There are several approaches to gaining new clients, but the best ones come from your professional network and your reputation.

Solo consulting is more work than many other positions you can find. If you want to work part time on a personal project you are better off finding a product org with flexible scheduling then solo consulting.

Nbox9··on Free Software: An idea whose time has passed?
In this situation forgiveness has has offered a board seat to the forgiven, which is something of considerable value.
Nbox9··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
To be a safe driver your eyes need to be constantly focused on the road, and even 15 seconds looks away can cause significant problem. Maybe you need less mental attention then I use, but it physically requires a lot of attention.
Nbox9··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
In contrast I hate driving cars. I feel like it’s my least favorite tool. I have a nice car, I’ve driven even nicer cars in different styles and hated them all. Driving requires so much of my attention I feel like it’s invasive. In addition I feel like I have to sit relatively still and use my muscles in very particular way. It’s a trap for my mind in body, and an experience I don’t find pleasant.

I am an American and will go out of my way to use any other mode of transportation, even at the expense of time or money. Sometime’s it’s just unavoidable.

Nbox9··on A SpaceX engineer's dark web insider trading sparks an SEC first
In the southern US public schools I was taught there were three goals of criminal punishment. I provide the list as a data point, and not representative of my personal views. The list is provided in no particular order.

1. To deter future crimes. If something is punished heavily people will be more reluctant to do it.

2. To reform the criminal. Time spent in jail might provide people with the opportunity to ‘turn their life around’. This time spent will prevent the criminal from doing any future crimes in the outside world both while in jail and after their release.

3. To provide justice to the victims. If something was stolen then it must be returned. Knowing a murderer is caught/safe will provide some relief to the victims. Justice is important to a civil society.

Nbox9··on Quantum weirdness isn’t weird – if we accept objects don’t exist
Quantum mechanics might be a bad model, but over the last century it’s become less controversial and more accepted in the scientific community. The last century has produced more scientists and mathematicians than any other century. I can see a few possible situations.

1. Quantum Mechanics is a fairly accurate representation of the world, or at least about as good as we can come up with given our current state of technology.

2. Quantum Mechanics is a fairly inaccurate representation of the world.

2a. Incorrect theories dominating for centuries is a natural consequence of the scientific method and trying to determine the nature of the universe.

2b. Incorrect theories dominating for centuries is a result of an imperfect implementation of the scientific method in our modern society.

2c. The scientific method is incapable of providing humans with a true and accurate understanding of the world.
Nbox9··on Pipe – Instant access to your annual cash flow
That really depends on the interest rate, your familiarity with the investments, your debt/asset ratio and your expected ROI.

I would argue every mortgage, real estate loan and small business loan is borrowing money to invest.

Nbox9··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
I’d like to double down on your defense of OP.

Communication overheard is an inherit trait of large organizations. To some degree we can improve this with digital technology, but it’s a fundamental problem.

If you need to rewire the communication pathways of 10 people, the complexity can be up to O(n^2) because you might need to make adjustments for how every individual is getting signal from other individuals. As organizations grow the old pathways of communication are less optimal, but it’s also more expensive to rewire communication. To some degree corporate communication overhead buys stability and consistency across the organization.

You should attempt to optimize communication with those nearest to you in a large workforce, but at a certain point all you can do is give feedback to corporate about the communication pain points. If you work in a large organization and you can optimize your local communications to be completely optimal you probably aren’t communicating with enough people to have a full impact on the organization.

Nbox9··on How Antidepressants Work, at Last?
I think this article was written for a more medically/biologically literate audience than the typical HR member. It assumes a level of jargon and background knowledge. I think it’s reasonable to ask for a summary targeted towards the HR audience.
Nbox9··on How Antidepressants Work, at Last?
My amateur guess is that because some of these drugs are associated with weight gain and some are not that this mechanism of action is not the primary actor for antidepressants with weight gain side effects.
Nbox9··on How Antidepressants Work, at Last?
I am not a biologist by any stretch, but I will try.

A common mechanism of action may have been found across antidepressants where none was found before. This common mechanism between both Prozac and Ketamine has some impacts on how cholesterol is used in the brain and BDNF (neuron survival and growth regulator).

Nbox9··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
It’s definitely possible while holding down a job, especially if you consider its 75 drinks a week, which allows for heavier drinking on the weekend then during the middle of the week.

As far as I am aware, no one has been able to make a successful Voice First product. Some products, like Spotify or Audible, are greatly enchanted with Voice, but voice is just another access point.
