Naritai··on Is "Rich Dad Poor Dad" a Fraud?
Numbers go up and down for rental businesses all the time – up slowly as you collect rent, down quickly as you need to perform maintenance.
Naritai··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
More like 'friendly to perceived in-group, not friendly to perceived outsiders'
Naritai··on China Targets Apple with Push into Advanced Smartphone Screens
Before anybody gets drawn in by the clickbait headline, the text of the article is about how China (i.e. large a Chinese vendor) is trying to win Apple's business away from Korean and Japanese vendors. So their sales teams are 'targeting' Apple, which is fine I guess, but not what most people think about when they hear that someone is targeting Apple.
Naritai··on The San Franciso Fire Department makes its own wooden ladders by hand
So why don't they buy wooden ladders?
Naritai··on Facebook’s diversity efforts show little progress after five years
Economic mobility is definitely a part of social justice. But let's note that those groups that most suffer from a lack of economic mobility are Black and Latinx groups. Even among whites, white men tend have better economic mobility than white women. See for example the data at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/03/27/upshot/make-y....

So, race and sex are directly tied to economic mobility, which is why they are the important factors that are being measured.

Naritai··on The San Franciso Fire Department makes its own wooden ladders by hand
It doesn't explain why they couldn't just buy wooden or fiberglass ladders though. I'm sure there are many vendors who would be happy to fill such a contract.
Naritai··on UK unveils extensive new plan to go all-electric by 2040
Or people who really just prefer horses as a means of transportation. They can have their shows and their rallies, and the rest of us can get to work on the means of transportation that makes sense.
Naritai··on Boiling, steaming or rinsing? Physics of the Chinese cuisine
It _is_ categorized under the title 'Pop Phyisics'...
Naritai··on How much does a tech bro cost?
Those are other criticisms of the analysis, not the simple fact that credits are worth 1:1 in real dollars, which is what the original poster was objecting to.
Naritai··on How much does a tech bro cost?
Of all the criticisms one can make of this article, this is one of the weakest. If I agree to a $10k pay cut from my employer, that's functionally equivalent to me giving my employer $10k.

(and in the US at least, 'credits' are usually applied at the very end of the tax process, so have a real 1:1 value with dollars owed, as opposed to deductions which can have varying value)

Naritai··on Don't Provide Your References to a Recruiter Until After Your Last Interview
Yeah, for better or for worse that may be all a given candidate has.
Naritai··on Don't Provide Your References to a Recruiter Until After Your Last Interview
If you've been working at a large company for several years, there may be very few people outside your company who know your work well enough to give a meaningful reference. Then, you can't give a manager's name, since they will almost certainly tell your own manager what is going on. That leaves only your co-workers.
Naritai··on How Square Made Its Own iPad Replacement
Yeah, as much as I like long-form pieces on how a technology was developed, pretty much any company with capital can make an Android tablet nowadays. But "Company develops internal tech solution to reduce BOM costs & reliance on third parties" isn't as sexy a title.
Naritai··on American tech giants are making life tough for startups
It's not discussed in this particular article, but economies of scale certainly favor incumbents in hardware as well. If you need confirmation, go ask Pebble guys how they fared after Apple Watch was launched.
Naritai··on To solve affordability crisis, Bay Area housing stock must grow 50% in 20 years
I actually agree with you here, I'm just pointing out that there is no indecision of any sort on the part of homeowners.
Naritai··on To solve affordability crisis, Bay Area housing stock must grow 50% in 20 years
Clearly everybody who already owns a home is heavily leaning into the 'make housing as expensive as possible' conclusion.

Where these sorts of articles comes from is observers who would like to change that narrative.

Naritai··on The Era of Very Low Inflation and Interest Rates May Be Near an End
Depends on where you live. California state law requires all lenders to except early payments, so a fixed loan holder in California really gets the best of both worlds.
Naritai··on High-Paying Trade Jobs Sit Empty, While High School Grads Line Up for University
I think you're glossing over the point,] that's been made by others in this thread, that while you're building up that 1500 hrs. of flying time you're getting paid not much more than minimum wage. i.e. the salary at 2 years is quite low.
Naritai··on Ask HN: Laid-off readers over 50, have you left the tech workforce?
Yeah, all hiring managers know roughly how old you are by the time they've scanned your resume.
Naritai··on The War on Waze
What you're discovering is why most Americans of other political persuasions take such a dim view of modern American 'libertarians'. Most of them just use libertarianism to mean "I want taxes to pay for the things I personally use, but not anything else'.
Naritai··on Kate Middleton’s ‘luxury’ birth cost less than the average U.S. birth
It's for the pediatrician's services. Remember, Babies generally stay in the hospital for 48-72 hours after birth, and they get visited and tested by doctors and nurses during that time, not to mention vaccines, care in the nursery, etc... it actually makes a lot of sense that the baby be considered the patient.
Naritai··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
I can hardly imagine trying to live in Boise without driving. Not because I love my car (now that I live in Silicon Valley I'm one of the few people who commutes by train), but because Boise is notably unfriendly to non-drivers. I agree that (every says) Portland should be much better for that.
Naritai··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
It's too bad, really, because as you say Boise is quite beautiful. But yeah, there was no plan for handling population growth. Too many people wanted to leave out by Eagle / Nampa, but work in downtown or at Micron. And of course there is absolutely no way to get anywhere except by car.
Naritai··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
Thanks. I know it's a tough definition, I just meant that someone making 60k is Boise is going to be at least as satisfied with his/her life as someone making ~100k in Silicon Valley...
Naritai··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
The key factor that you seem to be ignoring is ratio of the income to cost of living in that area. For the purposes of this I'll define upper middle class as 'can afford a house, a reasonably nice car, and can afford to go to pretty much any restaurant in town for special occasions'. Sure you can argue about details but that may well be true for a successful tradesman, especially one who runs his or her own business.
Naritai··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
In my experience 60-70k is considered to be a 'high' salary in Boise. Like, someone outside of tech who is making is 60k considers themselves to be upper middle class. I know people who relocated from Boise to Bay area, and were given 30-40% salary boosts for cost of living. Of course, at the time real estate was so cheap in Boise, it was commonly noted that it actually costs much more than 30-40% more to live in the Bay area than it does in Boise, but that's what was offered.
Naritai··on How to Level the College Playing Field
Alright, but that's an entirely different topic. Save that one for the emigration-from-US thread.
Naritai··on Ask HN: Do you have the courage to abandon your high paying job?
The problem is that 'similar space' is too easily misconstrued. What exactly is the 'space' that Google or Amazon operates in?
Naritai··on How to Level the College Playing Field
But that ignores a key underlying tenet of this discussion - that what school you graduate from is a major factor in your employability in the upper echelons of American society. If you want to get a top job in DC or Manhattan, you'd better graduate from a school that's on the interviewers' very short list of 'good' schools.
Naritai··on Robert Langlands, who linked number theory, analysis, and geometry (2015)
Yes, it's a little over the top. But as a Canadian, I can say that Canadian publications (especially left-of-center ones like the Star) tend to be a little nationalistic whenever a local does well. It's a natural response to the brain drain of many talented Canadians to our neighbor to the south.
