Nannooskeeska··on uBlock filter list to hide all YouTube Shorts
No, but SponsorBlock[0] is fantastic for that. I even have it setup on my home server[1] so it skips sponsor segments on my Apple TV, which is where we watch most of our YouTube.

I also work for a .NET shop and I absolutely love it. I'll happily work with .NET for the rest of my career.
Nannooskeeska··on Remote Code Execution in Marvel Rivals Game
No, Marvel Rivals and Overwatch are not related in any way other than they're both the same genre of game.
Nannooskeeska··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
I've been using a 34" 1440p curved ultrawide monitor (21:9) since 2020 and it's been amazing. Earlier this year I decided to try using a 42" LG OLED TV as my monitor and lasted about a day before deciding to go back. I 100% agree with you RE: viewing the corners of the flat screen. I'll never go back to a flat monitor/TV for my primary PC again. I think my ideal monitor is ultrawide, curved, 1440p, OLED, and 38" or so.
Nannooskeeska··on This behavior is by design
I had literally this exact same scenario happen but with Podcast Addict. It's still my favorite podcast app by far but the auto re-sorting threw me off for a while until I got used to it.
Nannooskeeska··on I applied to 250 jobs and timed how long each one took
This thread is interesting to me because I was told by my manager that my cover letter was a big reason they decided to interview me for my current job. Granted this was nearly 5 years ago, so things may have (read: have definitely) changed on the hiring front since then.
Nannooskeeska··on Castopod – Open-source podcast hosting platform
I'll second Podcast Addict. I've tried just about every podcast app under the sun and nothing comes close.

Tom Scott has a great video[0] about the Onkalo spent nuclear fuel repository in Finland[1], in which he talks about one of the reasons that they decided on the particular area - why would anyone dig there? Skip to 4:29 in the video for the relevant info.

I love this!
Nannooskeeska··on Being on Call
I'm with you 100%. I'm usually the first one in the office (well, pre-COVID anyway) and the first one to leave. Anecdotally, it's same since we started working from home - I usually try to start around 7-7:30am, and I generally don't start getting replies from coworkers until 8:30am or later.

I see a lot of threads and comments about starting at 9-10am, and I don't understand it. I'm usually eating lunch at 11am and done with work by 3:30pm. It's so nice! The few times I've had to work until 5-6pm have been awful for me. I feel like I don't really have any time to really DO anything before bed.

I have the same feeling about Dwarf Fortress. I absolutely love reading DF stories (see [0]), but the couple times I tried to play I just couldn't get into it.

Nannooskeeska··on Stop using Material Design text fields
I might be missing something, but I'm a little confused by this. Here's what that menu looks like on my phone (Galaxy Note 9) running the latest version of Android: https://i.imgur.com/uQaDDGG.png

Is there a different-looking menu that you're talking about on another version?

Nannooskeeska··on Google Chrome's fear of Microsoft Edge is revealing its bad side
I can't speak to the experiences of chapium, but my issue with Firefox is that I always experience a slowdown of some sort after it's been open and in use for a few hours. I have to go into about:profiles and "restart normally" to make it go away for another few hours. I never had this problem with Chrome. I'm on my third or fourth attempt to switch to Firefox in the last year and it's still happening. I'm tempted to switch back to Chrome, but I really, really don't want to.

It's not my computer either - my work PC, at least, is a powerhouse.

Also, I find Chrome's dev tools to be marginally better - but I'm not sure if that's just my familiarity with them over Firefox's.

Quick edit: there are some other problems I have with Firefox, but they're all relatively minor and don't bother me nearly as much as the random slowdowns and short freezes.

Nannooskeeska··on CDC outlines what closing schools, businesses would look like in US pandemic
I'm assuming it's the increase in people working remotely, thus having to use tools like Zoom and Slack to communicate more effectively with their teams.
Nannooskeeska··on Ask HN: What automation tools have you used to replace mundane activities?
I've had Ditto [0] on my PC for almost a year now, and I could probably count on two hands the number of times it's come in handy for me. Can you explain what is so great about having a clipboard manager? I feel like I'm missing something, and if it would become truly useful to me by using it a different way I'd like to learn.

Nannooskeeska··on Ask HN: How do you manage your personal budget?
As already mentioned by toomuchtodo, YNAB (You Need a Budget)[0] is fantastic. It's been my go-to for a few years, since before they released the web version. It's paid, but to me it's worth it for direct importing of transactions from my accounts.

There are, of course, a few free options that do a lot of the same things, but YNAB has been working for me for a long time and is well worth the money.

There's one of these in Eau Claire, WI, where I went to college [0]. I used to live across the bike trail from the sun, so I made the walk several times. Always blew my mind.

Nannooskeeska··on Traffic apps turned L.A.’s neighborhoods into ”shortcuts”
Anecdotal, but there have been several cases where I've been using Google Maps and it pops up a message saying that it found a faster route. All of these cases have been because of accidents or extreme traffic, and all have been on the same route (94 East from Eau Claire, WI to Madison, WI). As far as I know, Google Maps doesn't route traffic through side streets to save seconds like Waze does - it seems to re-route you when there are major delays.

Nannooskeeska··on Windows 10: New study shows Home edition users are baffled by updates
I have Home edition on my home desktop, and I see updates way more than 3 times per year as well. It doesn't really bug me unless the update takes more than a few minutes.

The search is absolutely terrible. And it's inconsistent. Sometimes I can type "no" and it'll come up with Notepad++ immediately. Other times I have to get all the way to the first + before it finds it. And still other times, it can't find it at all. That goes for all programs too, not just Notepad++.

I've somewhat tried using tools like Everything [0] but never given them more than a few tries before uninstalling. Maybe I should do it again.

Nannooskeeska··on Happy Sysadmins Day 23 things only 90s Sysadmins will remember
Little anecdote.

At my dad's old company, where he'd been for almost 25 years, they still used Lotus Notes. About a year ago, he moved to a new company that uses Office, and he hates it (old dog, new tricks, etc.). His old company is still the only company I've ever personally had experience with that still uses Lotus Notes.

Is it that bad?

Nannooskeeska··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
I'd assume that the people who are getting zero viewers aren't generally the same people getting bullied, doxxed, hacked, identity-thefted, and so on.
Nannooskeeska··on Nancy Pearl’s Rule of 50 for dropping a bad book
I'm the same way. If I lose interest in a book partway through, I'll stop reading it and go on to other books for a period of time and finish it later. I currently have 6 books in my "Reading" list on Goodreads, 5 of which I started at some point in the last couple of years and haven't finished yet.

I'm trying out switching over to Firefox and this is 100% the biggest thing I miss about Chrome. I keep double-clicking words and waiting a few seconds just for nothing to pop up.
