Hi there, I’m just your average HN user from Patras, Greece.

Interested in computers, technology, science and similar topics. Curious about astronomy, maths, geography, philosophy, religion, photography, science fiction and many many more.

You can find me usually on Twitter (yes, I know it’s called X nowadays) or have a look at my own webpage and Linkedin for contact details.

I’m a software/telecoms engineer, currently employed but always open for any interesting proposals for remote only positions ;-)

NKosmatos··on Meta just suspended the Facebook account of Neal Stephenson
The problem with all big companies nowadays... Getting to a real (competent) support person that can help is almost impossible :-(
NKosmatos··on The air is hissing out of the overinflated AI balloon
Thanks for posting this and yes you’re right, it’s a more detailed and well written post, giving a better explanation of the AI situation. We “old timers” love TheRegister but it has a certain style and way of writing, especially the original UK version (where BOFH gained fame).
NKosmatos··on Candle Flame Oscillations as a Clock
I was today years old when I learned that the frequency of a flicker candle flame is ~9.9Hz :-)
NKosmatos··on The billionaire developer closing London's pubs
Interesting... I could easily see this becoming a Guy Ritchie film (British crime comedy) :-)
NKosmatos··on Spritacular – a citizen science project of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs)
Inspired by the recent post about sprites: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44908528
NKosmatos··on A gigantic jet caught on camera: A spritacular moment for NASA astronaut
Looks like a scene from a sci-fi movie, where earth is being attacked ;-)
NKosmatos··on Dicing an Onion, the Mathematically Optimal Way
For sure this research can be nominated for an Ig Nobel Prize :-)

On a more serious note, thanks for posting this and letting me (us?) know about "The Pudding".

NKosmatos··on Toothpaste made with keratin may protect and repair damaged teeth: study
That’s very good news, but we’ll have to wait a little bit: >>> “keratin-based enamel regeneration could be made available to the public within the next two to three years.”
NKosmatos··on Print, a one-line BASIC program
Hey what happened to my submission title? I swear it started with “10 PRINT”. Perhaps a mod/admin changed it, but I don’t have an option to edit it now.
NKosmatos··on How I code with AI on a budget/free
Now all we need is a wrapper/UI/manager/aggregator for all these "free" AI tools/pages so that we can use them without going into the hassle of changing tabs ;-)
NKosmatos··on Copyparty – Turn almost any device into a file server
And like most things nowadays, it would get filled with highly illegal content within hours of you putting it there. The good old (innocent) days are gone and the society we’re living is not mature/educated enough for such ideas.
NKosmatos··on Show HN: I made the dumbest thing ever. A public chat where you pay to speak
I had a very similar idea but never materialized it, a big bravo to you for actually building something and not staying at the idea level.

I assume you want to make some money out of it? Like the guy that made 1mil for selling pixels. Hope it works for you ;-)

A few questions that might help you… Are you going to be moderating/censoring text and images? What about companies using your chat to advertise? What do you mean by a permanent time capsule? How many years are the messages going to be preserved? Do you have a character limit on the message? Could see a hard limit.

NKosmatos··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
I’ll second this idea. Keeping track of your hours on high altitude is important sine you get more radiation than us on the ground. I’ve read various articles about pilots & flight attendants health affected by higher exposure to radiation.
NKosmatos··on APOD is 30 Years Old Today
"Astronomy Picture of the Day" by NASA turns 30 today and they've shared an amazing mosaic.
NKosmatos··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
I totally agree. When you go into that much trouble of creating an alternative (safer) EU DNS, try at least to make it user memorable by using easy IPs. I don5 understand why other HN users have downvoted your comment.
NKosmatos··on If the moon were only 1 pixel: A tediously accurate solar system model (2014)
We’re never going to leave this planet/solar system if we don’t discover FTL (Faster Than Light) travel. Pretty scary if you think about how ridiculously empty is space.
NKosmatos··on Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole
Too bad the author didn’t explain more the concept of the “parent” universe and how our own (contracting & expanding) universe got created. Nice things to read/consider/ponder late at night :-)
NKosmatos··on Domains I Love
I’m going to be this “old grumpy” guy and mention that I hate it when I see plain text URLs which aren’t hyperlinked… come on, we’re in 2025 just do us a favor and put links, why do I have to select the text, copy it, open a new tab and then paste it (I’m using an older iPad). Even on desktop I have to select the text, right click and then visit the site.

First world problems :-)

NKosmatos··on Searching for Autograms
Very nice and explanation post. I need to try this with Unicode (Greek) characters.
NKosmatos··on Jerry Lewis's “The Day the Clown Cried” discovered in Sweden after 53 years
Torrent link anyone?
NKosmatos··on Duolingo CEO tries to walk back AI-first comments, fails
My favorite punch line from the post "...serves to highlight just how out of touch the wealthy are with regular people..."
NKosmatos··on Types of optical systems in a lens designer's toolbox (2020)
Thanks for this!!! My memory isn’t that good, and if you see I had commented in the previous post as well :-)
NKosmatos··on Types of optical systems in a lens designer's toolbox (2020)
I remember playing around with a lenses and light sources simulator, but can’t find the link :-( If I’m not mistaken it was posted here on HN but couldn’t find it by searching with various related keywords. If anyone has it please share :-)
NKosmatos··on Natural short sleepers have a genetic mutation
Paywalled :-(

"The SIK3-N783Y mutation is associated with the human natural short sleep trait" - https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2500356122

NKosmatos··on Dead Stars Don’t Radiate
Ah yes, our favorite HN “entertainment”. Scientists, quantum physicists in our case, having a beef about Hawking radiation :-)

Besides some high level ideas, which even us normal people can understand, there are so many details linked in the original post that you need an MSc/PhD to fully understand them.

For the time being, let’s just keep that the universe has a few extra trillion years, and isn’t expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years ;-)

NKosmatos··on Linus Tech Tips Calculates Pi to 300T Digits [video]
The announcement from y-cruncher (The first scalable multi-threaded Pi-benchmark for multi-core systems)

https://www.numberworld.org/y-cruncher/news/2025.html#2025_5...

NKosmatos··on A server that wasn't meant to exist
> Because sometimes, dishonest people do win.

Let me fix this for you… Because always, dishonest people do win.

Good read and it would make a good short film :-)

NKosmatos··on Universe expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years, much sooner than previously thought
It pairs well with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_fate_of_the_universe
NKosmatos··on HealthBench
Most probably I’m going to get downvoted, but I’m gonna say it…

It’s a pity they don’t support Greek language, keeping in mind that almost all medical terminology has Greek origins.

Anyhow, this is a step in the good direction and for sure it will aid many people looking for medical assistance via ChatGPT.

NKosmatos··on Microsoft Teams will soon block screen capture during meetings
There isn’t a single user (presenter) that would ask something like this. Only a presenter that has to follow some strict “high security” procedures would enable something like this. A politician, for example, will have an excuse in case something leaks. The fact that with a simple mobile having a camera you can copy whatever is being presented (or with slightly more technical ways) is irrelevant for laws and procedures ;-)
