Domains I love

ahmedsaoudi.com

A long time ago, after Flickr got acquired by Yahoo, I decided to make my own web app to host my photos because I had found the perfect domain for it:

https://pi.ctu.re

I also needed to build another app to fetch and resize the images, and found it neat to use the following:

https://infra.stru.ctu.re

In term of users the service never went anywhere and it's quite dated now but it doesn't cost much to keep it online and it's open source.

Ha! I love how you used one domain to get 2 names (or what these can be called?)

le.ctu.re is also a viable option ;)

Also this reminds of del.icio.us (not sure about the placement of that first dot, though). Epic domain and legendary service. RIP!

Thanks, del.icio.us was what inspired me at the time to find this domain hack, it was indeed epic!

One about the annoying things about Maciej is that he acquired Delicious the domain .icio.us, but never did anything auspicious, maybe suspicious or malicious with the latter.

Some classics:

- sci.fi

- cr.yp.to

- assimilated.b.org

- tpc.int [0]

0: https://en.everybodywiki.com/The_Phone_Company

- `traceroute -m 50 bad.horse` [1]

Does anyone remember the "every man" something or other Japanese website with funny WebGL / Three.js experiments from back in ~2015? It had a character builder and fun interactivity, and I could have sworn I learned about it on HN. I think Adult Swim briefly bought it and then shuttered it. It had a really silly domain name.

> cr.yp.to

Very "del.icio.us"-esque

cr.yp.to is five years older than del.icio.us.

b.org must be worth millions though!

One of my favorites (only great if you read the site contents):

https://how.rl.works

Assuming this references Reinforcement Learning? If so... valid

I always liked https://frame.work and https://play.date

This reminded of e.foundation. I find it hilarious that they combined the shortest domain with the longest tld :D

Just the other day I noticed that some kind soul set up http://subprocess.run to redirect to the python3 documentation.

I do get frustrated sometimes at the "omnibar" because of its inability to determine if I want to search for something or go to a url. It is especially irksome because the TLDs keep getting extended and I can't keep track anymore.

doc.new for a new Google Docs document is really neat and I use it often. sheet.new, slide.new, and form.new does the same thing respectively.

Yeah, I use that so much for notes and stuff that I had to create an app script to clean my GDrive from the hundreds, if not 1000+, of "unnamed document"s left behind.

I have nicer.info but haven't put it to use in 12 years.

I have youknowwhat.com. Bought it back when there was only one company selling domains and you had to pay two years in advance.

I used to get SO many "ecard" receipts from people who thought they were being clever by putting the "From:" as youknowwho@youknowwhat.com

It was so many emails, in fact, that I had to change email providers because they were threatening to kick me off from the traffic. That, and every other spammy email system that existed because that email address was in every single mailing list ever haha.

This reminds of the lady who had gmail.com (iirc) and, for years, refused to sell it to Google.

The URL does redirect to the mail service but not sure if I'm remembering wrong or she finally got an offer even she couldn't pass.

Do you mean gail.com?

I'm working on a personal project (which is very much not done) which is at the domain https://invit.ing/

It's for creating little invites for small events. Each event gets a https://invit.ing/ short link. No plans to make it profitable, just fun to build :)

A few of my favourites: brr.fyi, sheep.horse, timeflies.buzz, pudding.cool and bad.coffee.

One of the best domains I've ever seen is a local law firm in Houston, Pusch and Nguyen, who leaned into the common misspellings and has pushwin.com. (Alas, it's just a redirect to their main domain)

You should see their billboards around here. They lean into the pun very heavily.

https://cr.app is the time wasting microsite for the DTC toilet paper company Who Gives A Crap.

https://m.me is a nice domain to get to the dedicated FB messenger website.

TIL that .me is the TLD for Montenegro and not, as I had thought, owned by Apple for its MobileMe platform.

All two letter TLDs are country codes.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_code_top-level_domain

Agree. Much better than the fb.com they got for the main site.

My favorite is my first name .codes

Got it the night before .codes released and have had others try to buy it off me a few times. Never!

Neat! How did you find out (and when) .codes was going to be released?

Honestly I think I happened to be on godaddy like 12 years ago looking for a domain and saw it was coming soon. And then I stayed up and tried to get a domain haha

`n.pr` is neat. I had no idea that existed.

I discovered these two domain for GitHub and since then I use them all the time

repo.new (new repository page)

gist.new (new gist page)

docs.new (new Google Doc) sheets.new (new Google Sheet)

NPR not using the n.pr domain beyond a simple redirect to npr.org is an absolute shame.

I have little faith in the government organisations and registrars that run ccTLDs (which are likely to have political risk as well), and I'm glad that NPR likely thinks the same way.

Exactly. For that same reason I can't understand why startups tie their websites with some of the least stable countries out there.

I took notion too long to transition from that .so domain to the .com.

Oh oh! Include 90s.dev! Such a perfect domain name, a built in pun. What a waste.

I’m going to be this “old grumpy” guy and mention that I hate it when I see plain text URLs which aren’t hyperlinked… come on, we’re in 2025 just do us a favor and put links, why do I have to select the text, copy it, open a new tab and then paste it (I’m using an older iPad). Even on desktop I have to select the text, right click and then visit the site.

First world problems :-)

That was a deliberate choice, actually.

This is about the domains and not the websites!

I own two that I really like.

sci.app

and

vga.ai

Some good ones I can think of:

archive.org (does what it says)

ifconfig.me (same name as the tool)

noise.fm (I want this for a personal project but came in late)

js.org

radio.garden

My vote goes to .ws which redirects to a beer brand.

hacker.news (not official but a neat redirect)

traceroute bad.horse

I just get a bunch of stars.

A bunch of stars aren't a very good horse?

Beautiful

will.i.am

Anybody else whose name or moniker is a FQDN?

kinda? omarkama.li

I refrained from getting it - but it's been free for the last 25 years. Uncommon name + ending in a relatively uncommon TLD.

I have <mylastname.>de and I'm happy enough with that.

Kim Dotcom? kim.com

I've always wanted zir.com but had to settle for notzir.com

I have narcissistech.me to chronicle how similar the behavior of tech companies follows that of a narcissistic :P

I was about to suggest narcissis.tech but then I understood the joke.

Well played!

Why is there no anchor href (aka link) on those domains? Come on, this is a webpage.

ch.at is nice

It is indeed and with the rise of llm it can also be worth a lot of cash.

Iirc openai bought chat.com for several millions of dollars lately.
