NIL8··on The Sound So Loud That It Circled the Earth Four Times
"The Tsar Bomba's fireball, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) in diameter, was prevented from touching the ground by the shock wave, but nearly reached the 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi) altitude of the deploying Tu-95 bomber."

I'd love to hear the pilot's thoughts on this. From what I can guess, he couldn't have traveled very far away by the time the explosion occurred. At the very least, he must have felt tremendous turbulence.

I wonder if the scientists knew how close the explosion would be to the aircraft.

Yes! There's a lot of fluff on HN nowadays, but every once in a while we strike gold.

Why can't they use this type of sea floor scan in other oceans/areas? The image looks amazing and I can think of a number of uses for it.

Your reply was helpful and insightful. Thanks you.
NIL8··on U.S. Banks Curtail International Money Transfers
Very insightful. Even with the gov't/bank crackdowns and manipulation, I can see this being an excellent area for tech development. I'm thinking about "low-income people who depend on remittances," you mentioned.

Obviously, avoiding regulatory bullying would be paramount and that might be possible by using bitcoin. Just off the top of my head, I can picture a PayPal-ish website that money changers could use. (Money changers are everywhere!) They could open an account on the website to monitor, track, and verify transfers and payout cash to the receiver. And just like PayPal, if there were issues like fraud or laundering, the money changer would be accountable.

This idea is so obvious, I wonder if it's already being done.

NIL8··on How we end up marrying the wrong person
I'm sorry for your loss, but I am grateful for your comment. I'm coming up on 23 years of marriage and I don't know how I could handle such a loss.

Well said.
NIL8··on Effect of mobile telephones on sperm quality: Review and meta-analysis
The more pervasive wireless tech becomes, the more we need to know about it's effects. I'd like to see more research on this. I don't know who would fund it, though. Maybe there should be a Kickstarter that is strictly for scientific research. Is there such a thing?

Nice link! Thanks.
NIL8··on Engineering the Extinction of 40 Species of Mosquitoes
I live in a mosquito infested area and I have had malaria. Personally, I would love to see the end of all mosquitoes, even if it meant losing a few fish species.

However, even with an incredible amount of research and preparation, eliminating mosquitoes would have an untold number of effects. One effect would most certainly be the exponential growth of the human population. This could be a more difficult pest than mosquitoes.

NIL8··on How LEDs are Made
Neat!

Now, I'd like to see someone do something like this for solar panels.

NIL8··on Always Hungry? Here’s Why
Very well said.

The consequences would be immense if we could override even one of these triggers.

NIL8··on Education Automation, Freeing the Scholar to Return to His Studies (1962)
Interesting foresight:

"I would say, then? that you are faced with a future in which education is going to be number one amongst the great world industries, within which will flourish an educational machine technology that will provide tools such as the individually selected and articulated two-way TV and an intercontinentally net-worked, documentaries call-up system, operative over any home two-way TV set."

NIL8··on How We Get Tall
According to your article, the size of our brains has also decreased over the years. I would assume that this would also decrease our processing power and overall brain function. Interesting.
NIL8··on Tree of Indo-European Languages (image)
That's a massive tree and the fact that you noticed an error with Latvian reminds me of this: http://www.worldgolf.com/wglibrary/ross/ross14.html

But, seriously, I'm impressed with your very knowledgeable answer. It's very interesting.

NIL8··on How I'm using Twitter to acquire 100 uniques a day for my startup
99% of the time this technique will not be worth while.

However, there are niche markets where this could be useful. This is especially true when the user has a limited means to pay for ads.

Downvote? What are you saying with this downvote?

I am arguing against the blanket statement, "accredited or GTFO." I'm not saying that accreditation doesn't have it's place. However, doing a little research on what accreditation actually is, who does the accrediting, and what the outcome is, statistically, for accredited schools will swiftly prove my point. We don't just have failing schools, we have a failing institution that is, for the most part, accredited.

NIL8··on Online Learning: A Bachelor's Level Computer Science Program Curriculum
Over the last 10+ years my entire fortune has been made by directly countering this ignorance and other misconceptions associated with the connotations of accreditation. It's been brilliant! I am "set" for the rest of my life and as long as this naiveté is perpetuated, so will many others be.

Edit: changed perpetuates to is perpetuated

Lighten up people. I understand the frustration, but OP is not ALL of those posts you're referring to. He's one guy that posted a link looking for feedback.

OP: I like this and think it has a nice, fresh look to it. Look forward to playing around with it. Thanks.

Good point.
NIL8··on LA Sheriffs launch a surveillance app that uses your photos and videos
Did anybody else notice this?

"There’s no cost to the law enforcement agency to use LEEDIR if the emergency affects more than 5,000 people or covers five square miles and at least two public safety agencies respond."

"this week the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is using LEEDIR to gather photos and videos from eyewitnesses of a chaotic street party in Isla Vista that led to over 100 arrests. Sheriff's investigators hope the images they receive will allow them to ID more suspects."

I wonder how much this is going to cost taxpayers and who the shareholders are in this company.
