Strava is the running app
NDT··on Cleave.js – Format input text content when you are typing
Well, you did call this project "hot garbage trash." Surely you can take a little criticism.
NDT··on Instagram ranked worst social network for young people's mental health
Exactly.
NDT··on Instagram ranked worst social network for young people's mental health
It's what I'm planning on doing!
NDT··on Instagram ranked worst social network for young people's mental health
I really wonder what the user experience would be like if only the creator of the post could see the "likes" on Instagram and Facebook. Similar to Snapchat, I think it would alleviate some of this anxiety and need for validation if we didn't see how much attention our friends get on social media.
NDT··on Instagram ranked worst social network for young people's mental health
S/he probably means seeing dog pictures/videos. Or if he owns a dog, operating a dog account (god, that sounds weird typing it out).

And they have a feature called Highlights I believe which allow you to pin stories to your profile, so they're viewable forever
NDT··on Ask HN: What Social Media are you using outside HN?
Well, the Pope does.
NDT··on Google is buying Chelsea Market building for over $2B
The interesting thing is that there are at least 10 buildings/floors leased by IBM just in Manhattan. The prominent ones are the "IBM Building" in midtown (that used to be owned by IBM) and still has its name on the building and the somewhat iconic 51 Astor Place which is the Watson HQ.
NDT··on Spotify files for its IPO
They are not free. This is the THE reason I use Spotify over any others.
NDT··on Can Ford Turn Itself into a Tech Company?
No
NDT··on Twitter Is Crawling with Bots and Lacks Incentive to Expel Them
Alternative accounts are much more common on sites like Twitter and Instagram. I don't think it happens as frequently on Facebook.
NDT··on Big brother is here, and his name is Facebook
How did you receive these notifications? Couldn't it be friends emailing/inviting you to join?
NDT··on Aadhaar: Ushering in a Commercialized Era of Surveillance in India
^ wholeheartedly agree.
NDT··on Snap falls to IPO price
Yes, people that buy into them are just dumb.
NDT··on Snap falls to IPO price
It's psychological. As soon as you put something on FB, Twitter, etc. it's no longer "yours". Snapchat makes conversations and pictures disposable. It's just fast and ugly. And it powers the app by nudging by users into creating content to send to a friend without having to worry about rehearsing for the perfect picture/tweet/etc.

Also it's private. Facebook is mainly used by people with friends and family. Celebrities/notable figures rarely interact with others outside of Twitter. But even with Twitter, the interactions are permanent -- even when tweets are deleted.

On and it's great for sexting, which let's not kid ourselves, was the original appeal and still is for a lot of people in their target demographic.

NDT··on Snap falls to IPO price
Not really. Retail investors have netted $-7 while "insiders" netted $0. This is of course assuming that they've held on to this day.
NDT··on Elon Musk confirms that he just bought back X.com, the domain he owned in 1999
Actually, yes
NDT··on McClure steps back at 500Startups after internal sexual misconduct investigation
I mean there's also a couple other things that differentiates McClure's situation. He's also married. He seems to have accelerated the harassment immediately. Obviously I don't know the details, but it doesn't seem like he was just asking her out on a date. And if he did then clearly she wasn't receptive and he should have stopped. I think it's pretty easy to see that there's a clear violation on McClure's side.
NDT··on McClure steps back at 500Startups after internal sexual misconduct investigation
Actually he doesn't.
NDT··on McClure steps back at 500Startups after internal sexual misconduct investigation
There are many public figures who have met, dated, and married their colleagues. One that comes to mind is Jimmy Kimmel and his wife (head writer for his show). I think as long as it doesn't affect hiring/promoting/professional decisions it's a different situation. This is also assuming, of course, that there is no form of harassment going on.

Anonymity comes from not knowing someone's bitcoin address which in many cases is safe to assume.
NDT··on Visual Studio for Mac
I don't understand. I've been using VS on Mac for the past 3 months to develop C# applications for a class of mine. Was that just a beta? What's so different about this?
NDT··on Facebook told advertisers it can identify teens feeling 'insecure', 'worthless'
A spotify subscription is more valuable than whatever option a social network could offer. Facebook makes a boatload off ads so there's no way they would just turn the option off even with a small subscription. Plus, not enough users care about ads. Most of the comments on this forum will be preaching to the choir.
NDT··on Smart Photos
it's not too different from what Facebook does.
NDT··on Square Said to Acquire Team from Struggling Social App Yik Yak
I really disagree. I've used the app maybe 2-3 years ago and looking at their website, it doesn't seem like the main UI or features have changed much. If I didn't know what the app was, going on their website I would think it's a Buzzfeed clone given all their listicles and clickbaity headlines.
NDT··on Silicon Valley Hedge Fund Takes on Wall Street with AI Trader
silly question, but why do your LinkedIn and Github say you work at a generic "Financial Industry Company" rather than Jump? especially since Jump is quite prominent.
NDT··on How the Flash Crash Trader’s $50M Fortune Vanished
He was manipulating the market by generating large sell orders. This would drop prices (because others can see that some stock is being rapidly sold off -- especially by high-frequency traders or other automated programs who will also start selling). He would then cancel these orders to buy at the new low prices. This is called spoofing orders.

It was a large reason for the crash (though not the only component in my opinion) because these orders amounted to $200 million worth of bets that the market would fall and they were replaced or modified 19,000 times. And of course this is just one person. The market involves multiple people so you can imagine how much money was at stake here.
