Myrth··on NASA’s $8B plan to find extraterrestrial life
Drake equation always bothered me when used in argument of contact probability, because it doesn't take into account time. Yes, there might have been billions of extraterrestrial civilizations, but that doesn't mean there are currently ones that 1) already can communicate or receive EM waves, and 2) not yet deprecated use of EM waves. Oh and there's also speed of light issue.

I can hear SSDs, consistently when I plug them, and the noise stops when unpluged, is that weird?

Myrth··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
I thought we were talking about what we already have, not what we want to have?

EDIT: Bridges and planes are built by strictly organized companies, with clear (ideally) leadership and plans. Internet has evolved much less centralized, and as a result, in a more natural fashion. No one stopping you from attempting to write a perfect software, but if you want to re-use results of million man-years of development, you'll have to deal with natural processes.

Myrth··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
I think it feels hacky because it is, and it's natural. And by natural I mean this is how spontaneous complex systems evolve. Internet is a result of half of a century of millions of people's contributions for different and often opposing goals and priorities. For other examples of hackiness take a look at other complex natural processes, like multicellular living creatures and ecosystem in general.

Food/water supply/heating/cooling/medicine supply/medical equipment.

Our tools, household items and clothes are built with planned obsolescence, can't be repaired by consumer and thus require frequent replacement.

Former CIA director estimates 2/3rd of US population will die in EMP [1], others 90% [2]. In US it would be so much worse because we used to comfortable consumer only life, and most wouldn't be able to adjust. Is that really that outlandish?

I still don't understand what makes banks special from any other institution that practices leveraging and fractional storage of their clients' assets? Like Comex or LBMA vaults.
Myrth··on “autocomplete=off is ignored on non-login input elements”
Exactly. I have no idea why people blamed IE for not following standards. It was totally all of its users' fault for using it.
Myrth··on Urbit is now in open developer beta
It makes sense because it's de facto standard, and intuition is experience, and intuitive is what we're used to. I'm not sure how it can be explained more basically.

A question for people in the know - if there's a research/treatment that can not be patented/monetized due to its generic nature, but it still requires millions of dollars in trials - is it doomed to never be done?

Myrth··on V initiative – Building tomorrow’s secure digital democracy
I think the main issues to overcome will be making sure that only registered users vote, and only once per voting event.

This could be achieved by distributing an undivisible votecoin to each registered voter upon presenting their proof of registration or eligibility.

But then there's a weak point of someone giving/receiving more than one votecoin (bribe, threat, blackmail, etc)

Even if there are checks and balances with number of votes vs number of registered voters, there's again the weak point of human element of data entry.

Myrth··on Google is Breaking the Internet
Ok, how about not fully random sources and targets, but ones that somehow involved in DMCA lobbying and enforcement. That would remove the "innocent" from equation.
Myrth··on Google is Breaking the Internet
The sending itself wouldn't be hurting anyone. The responding parties would have to make a decision to hurt innocents or not, and maybe actually forced to do some due diligence, that is expected of them. And maybe voice out that current requirements make this hard or impossible for them.
Myrth··on Google is Breaking the Internet
Someone needs to send a couple of millions DMCA takedown requests from random sources to random targets, to make this problem visible.
