Outages list [1] says routes aren't being announced via BGP anymore [2]

Yep, i'm no expert, but a BGP looking glass seems to suggest that all of the best paths (chosen by AS pathlength?) are not being advertised to peers... But some routes are being advertised? Idk

Updates from outages list:

Update 1:

Looks like their networks are not announced anymore. From 4 providers, we don't see any network matching 104.244.42.1, 104.244.42.65, 104.244.42.129 or 104.244.42.193 (A records for twitter.com)

Update 2:

show ip bgp 104.244.42.0/24 % Network not in table No routes present...

Update 3: (3 mins ago)

Networks are back now, but quite some packet loss. Also, Comcast in norcal goes via Level3 to Twitter in London. They are also announcing direct to NTT which seems to get served locally. So, they're not quite out of the woods yet.

You can ignore things like "Not advertised to any peer" in looking glass output, just a function of a router being used as the looking glass server and not participating in routing.

https://twitter.com/NewWorldHacking/status/79551083891643187...

But why post that on twitter? That makes no sense.

Their API is down too - started slowing down at 2016-11-07T05:44:52Z and went offline in earnest at 2016-11-07T05:47:37Z.

As you can imagine - we have a lot of analytics on this sort of stuff at Zapier. :-) Usually we know about API outages before any official status pages update (besides our own https://status.zapier.com/#app-status). Ironically Twitter's status page is also down... https://dev.twitter.com/overview/status (or maybe that is just their status API? hard to tell).

It is pretty rare for Twitter to go down - even for a moment.

Update - at 2016-11-07T06:12:55Z we're seeing some HTTP 200s...

status.twitter.com redirects to https://status.twitterstat.us/ which presumably is their official status page. Which, by the way, reports that all systems are operational.

>Updated 16 days ago

That's pretty funny. What use is a status page that's updated that infrequently?

Really?

Why would you update it if nothing is happening....

I had a product idea for a status page that would switch "Degraded service" whenever people started checking it.

So poor blokes know the status is up to date and not frozen for the last couple of weeks.

Really, how hard is it to update the date?

Wikileaks and 4chan also experiencing issues. Looks like a DDoS possibly connected to DNCleaks2 released by Wikileaks a few hours ago.

They all seem back up now.

Well, except wikileaks. 502.

wikileaks up for me.

All back up now.

Now only twitter is out. 4chan and wikileaks seem fine.

Maybe not... Intermittent on all three at this point.

From their Facebook, "WikiLeaks servers are currently under a massive targeted DDoS attack"

https://www.facebook.com/wikileaks/posts/1145935365441574

I tend to give twitter a lot of crap, but it's one of my gotos for finding out what is happening during an attack. Not in this case.

Instead you came to hacker news? May be "hackers" don't know enough about this place to want to DDoS it.

Maybe it's updating its servers to become a protocol

We'll all have to go back to .plan files.

Yep. It's always good to know there's a [preexisting solution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_protocol).

Queue hordes of people typing "man finger"...

I actually made my Twitter available through finger a while back, just for fun. (finger david@gloveraoki.net) Ironically, as it is cached, it still works!

Dial in to The Fiddlers Grove BBS for updates.

My acoustic coupler has been waiting its entire life for this moment.

A bit suspicious right before the US election, maybe it's under attack.

We'll find out soon enough.

Very possible, a few places are already predicting it.

All the major news stations would love that scenario. Each station gets to broadcast the news they want to say without that pesky little social media providing information that may counter what they are saying.

Right after WikiLeaks released the last batch of DNC/Podesta/Clinton emails, the most damning ones...

Hmm...

> the most damning ones..

It doesn't really seem so, or at least they seem no better or worse than what's been released already.

Trump supporters have been waiting months for the Wikileaks bombshell, October^H^H^H^H^H^H^H, errr.. November surprise, that will destroy Hillary and put her behind bars, implicating her in arms sales, pay for play access to the government, treason and if you follow the crazies, pedophile child trafficking and satanic cults.

Each time, the next batch is going to be the one with the damning information that brings her down, and each batch it's more of the same.

Sure, the contents don't speak well of Hillary, her team, or the media (and I think based on her actions she probably shouldn't be allowed near any sort of classified information again), but these are not the damning bombshells people have been fantasizing about, and those bombshells likely don't exist, because if they did, they would have been released well before millions of people had already voted, and not on the eve of the election.

> if they did, they would have been released well before millions of people had already voted, and not on the eve of the election.

Assange has claimed multiple times, that he thinks these elections are a farce... Perhaps he knows some things you and me don't.

BTW, I'm not a trump supporter (not even a US citizen), but I don't think Clinton is better than him, at least for the rest of the world. Trump talks a lot, but his administration will probably be more or less the continuation of the Bush/Obama policies, particularly the foreign policy...

> I'm not a trump supporter (not even a US citizen)

Me too!

With Hillary I think American foreign policy will definitely be a continuation (she was the person in charge of it for 4 years), and that's not such a good thing for the rest of the world.

At least with Trump there is the possibility that things could change. I also quite like his ideas around addressing corruption in politics, though again as you mentioned, whether or not he'd be able to actually do anything about it if elected is a different matter entirely.

You like the corruption strategy of a politician whose entire career is corruption. His "charitable" foundation pays his legal bills FCS.

> whose entire career is corruption. His "charitable" foundation pays his legal bills FCS.

Meanwhile... From https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/795284806510714881

> Chelsea Clinton used Clinton Foundation resources for her wedding -- email from top Bill Clinton aid Doug Band https://wikileaks.org/podesta-emails/emailid/52046#efmABYACC

I like the points he mentioned as a specific policy proposal here:

https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trumps...

Please let me know which ones you disagree with.

> Assange has claimed multiple times, that he thinks these elections are a farce... Perhaps he knows some things you and me don't.

I imagine Russian intelligence knows lots of things you and me don't, yes.

Release a huge pile of emails no one will have time to vet, the day before an election, after millions have already voted. A fiendishly diabolical plan, Mr. Assange!

Check, mate, and match!

DNC could have gone open source at anytime.

They choose not to.

These are private emails. Why don't you go 'open source' with your email account?

I doubt WikiLeaks wants them. Know how to make a Gmail account public?

Maybe I could crowd source people to clean up all the spam?

Well, you probably don't want it continually open, because then you can't use it for authentication?

If you did want it public, you could probably set up an ifttt recipe to post them all somewhere?

Oh, alternate idea: set up a thing to forward all the emails to e.g. a tumblr "email to post" address?

Something like that.

Edit: wait I think ifttt calls them "applets" now instead of recipes?

Private emails... From political parties, public representatives and lobbyists. These are VERY PUBLIC people. IMO, these people should not enjoy having a private life in the first place, because, as the Podesta emails show, they end up using their political career as a way to get more money and power, NOT to serve the People.

What, specifically, is damning?

After claiming it a few hundred times, people have started to doubt it.

From Reddit ( https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiLeaks/comments/5bjhwx/wikileaks... ):

> CNN colluding with DNC over questions to ask Trump. Apr 2016

> Here's another one for Cruz:

Sure, these are not the end of the world, but... They are documented proof that CNN and Dems colluded.

BTW, did you notice that I also mentioned "DNC" and "Clinton" emails?

Here are the new DNC emails: https://wikileaks.org/dnc-emails/?q=%40releasedate+%222016-1...

Oh, and they dumped the whole Podesta file: https://file.wikileaks.org/file/podesta-emails/

Just as I was sending something to Katie Couric, too.

Wikileaks was briefly down. Then Twitter went down for a bit ( just checked now).

Reddit, yc, Netflix, I had no issues

Twitter is unreachable again

I can still get to it from Singapore, and you all aren't missing anything.

DNS is fine. Routes are gone. Seeing the same in Sydney and Dallas. Pretty worrying.

Routes are back!

Bit of a BGP blip there. Nothing to worry about. It's not like anyone's been practising attacks on fundamental Internet infrastructure.

It is kind of weird but this site supposed to be their status page, right? Or this might be scam. Could somebody verify?

http://twitterstatus.tumblr.com/

I also got redirected to some other odd status page. I failed to grab a screen cap before I lost the page.

Twitter API is down. Just got alerts. That status page appears abandoned.

Thanks, this is what I thought.

4chan's guess at ddos origins:

http://boards.4chan.org/g/thread/57422927

Currently regional. Inaccessible from US west coast; seeing responses from web requests from machines on east coast (nyc)

I'm in Europe and it also seems offline from here ATM.

Edit: it's up again

Wait, I'm in Ohio and I am able to log on...and I see tweets from others from a minute ago. Is this only for the West coast?

EDIT: I just tweeted... https://twitter.com/noobermin/status/795510255333556224

Same here. Could read that tweet perfectly fine... Weird.

Wikileaks is down also, coincidence?

I get a 502 for Wikileaks but consensus is there's no BGP announcements for twitter. Possible it's the same attacker but they seem to be two different attacks.

Their own status site is showing wrong info: status.twitter.com

Don't even know what to say anymore.

Make Twitter great again!

the 400lb hacker strikes again

"works on my machine"

although, http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ reports it as down

Edit: I'm from Romania

Same here, AU.

I just tried to look at this to see BGP activity: https://twitter.com/bgpstream?lang=en

It's color scheme just completely changed.

Up for me over the last half hour (US/CA) - not even slow. Still getting fresh Tweets, able to Tweet and Retweet.

It's back already. Calm down.

Twitter is working when proxied through Europe. Not working on the west coast of the US.

Pac NW here, #worksonmybox

Doesn't look like a DNS issue this time. Something specific to Twitter specifically?

Indeed the DNS seems alright. I am seeing broken routes to their load balancers from all of my testing sites (on opposite sides of the globe).

How can you quickly check DNS? Combination of Who.is / traceroute / ping / nslookup?

dig is always helpful.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig_(command)

Just dig(1)

It's back now. Panic over.

Trying to search "twitter ddos" on twitter and it's not loading...

Are there any alternatives? It kind of sucks that twitter can just go down and there's really nothing to replace it.

Twitter is definitely down, I just read about it on #twitterdown

Give it an hour before posting this...its back up for me 16 minutes later.

Or.. don't? Maybe post what's happening when it is happening. Especially when it is a freak and unusual occurrence. And if it's not news worthy it will sort itself out an hour later.

Just curious. Why is this post flagged?

The fact that it's still front page suggests mods are keeping it up.

Flagged, then dead, and now back up. -- Edit: and now flagged again. --

Someone wants it down, and someone wants it back up.

That is weird. There was that "Twitter Could Have Become a Protocol" thread just recently. Maybe people feel saturated? ... Still, it does seem down (along with a few others).

I found this super interesting and great 'hacker news' - any idea why it was flagged?

They went out of business.
