I wonder if lack of empowerment is partially caused by unnecessary layers in administration. Admins are there "support" teachers but that probably also takes away some of the job aspects that feel "empowering."
MrVitaliy··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
I don't want to go back to pre-Tesla cruise control. Not the FSD but the basic cruise control they offer that can stop in traffic, keep in the lane and automatically start moving once the car ahead moves.
MrVitaliy··on VW to fire top executives at software unit Cariad, source says
This makes sense how Tesla markets FSD in terms of traditional accounting. While not a part of official BOM, $15k for self driving is a big chunk of the final price for those who select it.
MrVitaliy··on VW to fire top executives at software unit Cariad, source says
"perfectly satisfactory in car software" is arguable. ID4 still doesn't have OTA update in US. Navigation and UI software inside the car is OK only because of Android Auto (CarPlay). I've also witnessed a number of instances where Nav software would freeze and apparently the only way to reset it was to park, get out of the car, close the door, wait few seconds and then get back in.
MrVitaliy··on Intel Core Ultra Meteor Lake CPU Breaks Cover with 128 GPU Cores
Household circuit in US maxes out at around 1700W. I hope in future where we don't need to wire L2 charge port to a home office, just to run a faster workstation.
MrVitaliy··on Ruby's switch statement is flexible
Ruby is going through some kind of renascence age, I'm seeing allot of Ruby articles lately.

Probably 4-5 years old. You can run your own private Bedrock server with backups and all. My daughters and I have been building the same creative world for three years now, lots of memorable structures.

MrVitaliy··on Google terminated our Developer Account, says it is “associated”
What a time to be alive. Some people spend considerable amount of time and money to delist themselves from google, yet others get it with 0 effort.

MrVitaliy··on Why All Printers Suck, Even the Best Ones (2016)
I guess my expectations of printers are low -- don't need color or fancy LCD screens. So I had HP 1022n for about 2 decades now and it works wonderfully every single time. Just need to replace toner cartridge every 2-5 years, but they're cheap.

Its very hard to find another device in my home that has operated for this long without becoming obsolete or breaking down. Even my AC unit is obsolete by current efficiency standards.

MrVitaliy··on Reviews of Android TV launcher after Google added ads to the homescreen
Install another TV launcher app (I like Simple TV Launcher). Once installed, use Android dev tool on a remote laptop/workstation (platform-tools, adb.exe) to remotely connect to the Shield device and disable Google TV. The command to disable Google TV launcher is something like 'adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 google.android.tv'

Once Google TV Launcher is disabled, Shield picks the next installed Launcher on your system as the default TV Launcher. Be aware that most 3rd party TV launchers aren't very configurable or polished but will launch your other apps. Maybe try a few different ones before disabling Google TV Launcher.

MrVitaliy··on The many ways of splitting a rectangle in many
Interesting, this could be applied in shipping/packaging industry as a sort of heuristic, even if knapsack problem is a more natural fit.
MrVitaliy··on Comcast will start charging Xfinity customers fees for exceeding their usage cap
So it comes down to something like this

1. Comcast cable internet - $65 2. Uncap monthly limit - $30 3. Fast VPN service[0] - $10 4. Netflix subscription - $15

[0] Comcast is known for injecting HTML/JS into http traffic

So about $120/mo not too far from paying for cable 10 years ago.

MrVitaliy··on Scorpion Transforming Computer Chair
> The most ergonomic mice are usually from one of these gaming companies

No they're not, just do your research [0] and don't buy flashy gear aimed for 13 year-olds. My general rule of thumb is if it looks like an LED alien, it's almost always a bad product. The company spent more money on marketing/looks than on engineering. This is very evident with current WiFi routers and motherboards.

I think developers wouldn't mind practicing things just "because FAANG does it" as long as the employer also pays salaries equal to FAANG salaries.
MrVitaliy··on Cities Are Saying ‘No’ to 5G, Citing Health, Aesthetics, and FCC Bullying
This feels a lot like the battle of Blue-ray vs HD-dvd back in the early 2000s. While Blue-ray did win, it was less relevant to the industry than the original CD format. Things just moved online, flash storage and everyone got high-speed internet. If public WiFi becomes more ubiquitous, especially in densely populated areas, 4G vs 5G will be just as irrelevant as the battles for next CD format.

MrVitaliy··on FCC report finds almost no broadband competition at 100Mbps speeds
It's not broadband for me, it's monthly data caps. I can stream 4 different netflix shows, on 50Mbps, and blow through 1TB monthly cap in 3 weeks. No point of getting even faster connection.
MrVitaliy··on My Forgotten Language: the brain can lose and reclaim an abandoned mother tongue
I view it in terms of opportunity cost. Let's say your kid has 1 hour of productive attention span per week, time of focused learning. You can either teach them your native tongue or something else, like math and science, or better English.

Kids still pick up some vocabulary from speaking to their parents/grandparents. And even if they spoke it toddler-fluently before getting into preschooler, they won't be able to read a newspaper by the time they're teenagers. Without constant immersion, kids just don't have the discipline to keep going at it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.
