MrMid··on Google Maps' Moat
Our local map server, Mapy.cz, has also mapped almost every building in Czech Republic (or at least it seems from my usage of the map)[1], with, presumably, waayy smaller budget. They have also the best tourist ang cycling navigation for our country. [1] https://mapy.cz/s/2gTui
MrMid··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
I got my friends Apple Watch stuck last week just by looking at it's features. IIRC it got stuck while using the "flashlight". It suddenly froze, and it took me a while to reboot it (it got stuck once more while rebooting).

All in all, it took me about a minute to break it, and around 5 minutes to get it working again. I was getting a bit nervous.

MrMid··on Peter Thiel sells most of remaining Facebook stake
Not OP, but for me posters and word of mouth are definitely a better source.
MrMid··on Why Are Hearing Aids So Expensive?
I would not say it's inevitable. As a musician, I use Elacin filters with custom moulds, and these are great. There is no noticeable change in the sound itself, you just hear the sound at lower volume and more clearly, without most of the echoes.

These are pricey though (around 200 EUR), but definitely cheaper than hearing loss.

MrMid··on W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns
No, I mean Play DRM content, not Flash plugin. I'm on developer edition though, and it's been a while since I installed it, so I might be wrong. Thanks for your info!

Doesn't Firefox block DRM content by default? If they continue to do so, and if Chrome does so, then this shouldn't have much effect. If most peoples browsers block it, apps shouldn't use it.
MrMid··on Thinkpad X62
I don't like these so much. I have an E7240 for a year now, and while it's great compared to most other laptops, I still prefer the keyboard of my ThinkPad X61s. When I tried the X230 keyboard, it also felt somewhat better than that of my Latitude.

That said, when I used Lenovo Yoga for a while, I was just surprised how bad a keyboard could be. I love my Latitude.

EDIT: and I miss the TrackPoint, although with a touchscreen it doesn't matter so much.

MrMid··on Bringing back the iPhone headphone jack, in China
I don't think so. AFAIK the lightning connector is fully digital and the D/A convertor is only in the adapter.
MrMid··on Insane state of today's advertising part 3
Wouldn't that be called a "book"?
MrMid··on Big brother is here, and his name is Facebook
At least they tell you so.
MrMid··on All but One "Watch Dogs 2" Hacks Work in Real Life
Well, this could help you detect malfunctioning/hacked unit. But I doubt it's installed on every traffic light. AFAIK the traffic lights are controlled by PLCs which can be easily reprogrammed if you gain access to them.

On the other hand, I've had an assignment a few weeks ago to make a circuit to control some traffic lights for crosswalk, and I'm pretty sure it was simple enough that the only way to hack it was to have direct access to it with a soldering iron.

MrMid··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
Won't compile.
MrMid··on Ask HN: What kind of chatbot do you need?
I'd use one that replied facebook messages for me, kind of autoreply.
MrMid··on Raw Organic Apricot Kernels
I struggle a bit to find a difference between these and alcohol. It's also offering the same options - either drink too much and die immediately (directly or indirectly of intoxication), or kill yourself a bit, day by day.
MrMid··on Is your smartphone listening to you?
Well, I just.. disconnected the mic in my laptop, the day it arrived (there is no webcam). As phones are concerned, I use my trusty SE ELM featurephone, so I'm not very worried about Googles, Facebooks, Samsunsungs...
