MrMember··on Ask HN: People who use different emails everywhere, who sold you to spammers?
I have firstinitiallastname@gmail.com and I get all sorts of interesting stuff from other people. Someone even signed up for their bank account using my address and I got all of the emails for that without any sort of verification.
MrMember··on Leaked Game Boy emulators for Switch were made by Nintendo, experts suggest
Nobody knows who owns the rights to the No One Lives Forever series, but something like three or four companies have stated they will fiercely defend it as if they do if someone tries to do anything with the IP.
MrMember··on How destructive are nuclear weapons really?
Even worse if you're not sure whether you'd rather be one of the early people to die or one of the survivors.
MrMember··on Success and Failure at Pebble
I have a Garmin Instinct, the battery life is insane. Using the GPS for on average an hour a day I get a week to a week and a half on one charge. Without using the GPS at all it can go 3-4 weeks.

MrMember··on Ask HN: When did computers get 'fast enough' for you?
Maybe the early 2010s? SSDs were ubiquitous and cheap enough for at least the OS and the most commonly used applications and games. Around that time CPU performance plateaued for a while. There were improvements but nothing like going from single core to multi-core, or the raw speed improvements from earlier generations. The processor I bought in 2011 easily lasted me until around 2018 without issue or any real desire to upgrade (and that was for gaming, if all I was doing was general purpose computing I'd still be using it).
MrMember··on A 1970s boardgame takes about 1,500 hours to complete
The game that famously accounts for Italian soldiers needing more water rations so they could boil their pasta.
MrMember··on CPM MagnaCut
Really interesting read. It's cool that a company like Crucible was willing to consider a proposal for something as expensive, time consuming, and potentially fruitless as a new steel from essentially someone off the street.
MrMember··on “It Started as a Joke”: On the Design of Idle Games (2019)
I spent the $10 on Melvor and it's far and away the best idle game I've ever played. The upfront cost and no microtransactions at all means the game can be balanced around actually being fun.
MrMember··on RadioShack – Bringing Cryptocurrency to the Mainstream
It did result in one of the best YouTube poops of all time so there's that at least.

MrMember··on YouTube-dl's first release since June 2021
I have the same problem, yt-dlp didn't fix it for me.
MrMember··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
You could see that with how YouTube Rewind evolved over the years. It started out highlighting popular videos from original YouTube creators and at some point became Jimmy Kimmel doing Fortnite dances.
MrMember··on Does Captain Kirk die when he goes through the transporter?
Stephenson's Fall, or Dodge in Hell deals with this extensively. It's even more meandering than most of his work and I would not overall call it one of his best but the parts dealing with whether or not an uploaded copy of someone's brain is the same person are pretty interesting.
MrMember··on Does Captain Kirk die when he goes through the transporter?
The Prestige (major spoilers to follow) has the same idea. A stage magician invents a trick that appears to instantly teleport him across the room and nobody knows how he does it. The "trick" is that a duplicate is created and the original is dropped into a locked container of water to drown.
MrMember··on Android 12
Early on version updates were significant. Big, important changes adding nice features and noticeably improving the user experience (I remember one Android update where they put a lot of focus on improving the UI responsiveness for example).

Mobile OSes are mature these days, there aren't as many (or any) opportunities for sweeping changes that improve the experience. These days I almost dread Android updates because I don't know what they're going to change for no reason that breaks my user flow.

MrMember··on The Coding Secrets Hidden in “Sonic the Hedgehog” [video]
What always amazes me is how small development teams often were, even through the N64/PS1 era. Flagship games from major publishers would have software development teams in the single digits, sometimes just 2 or 3. And they were remarkably productive. The multiplayer component for Goldeneye on N64 for example, one of its most notable features, was added by a single person in a few weeks because he had some extra time between when the game was "finished" and the date when it actually had to be finished to go to printing.
MrMember··on Windows 11 has started rolling out worldwide
I think the Steam Deck will be successful using Linux but that's because it's a device designed for a specific use. As a portable device designed to play games through Steam it will excel, because Valve has put a lot of effort into making gaming on Linux "just work."

As a general purpose desktop OS Linux still isn't there for most people in my opinion, as much as I want it to be. Every so often I try to make the switch to Linux full time and there's always some hitch that pushes me back to Windows. I don't even mind digging around and making changes in conf files if it will fix the problem, but I always encounter something that I consider a deal breaker where I hit a brick wall and just can't figure it out.

MrMember··on Windows 11 has started rolling out worldwide
Personally I won't ever use it as long as it requires a cloud login.
MrMember··on Ask HN: Are you also getting extremely obvious spam bypassing Gmail's filters?
Google will automatically add meeting invites to your calendar even if you don't accept them. You have to disable multiple options in both Gmail and Google calendar to stop this from happening. It is default behavior.
MrMember··on Ask HN: Are you also getting extremely obvious spam bypassing Gmail's filters?
I've been getting the same one. I mark each as spam but that doesn't seem to do anything.
MrMember··on 2006: Dwarf Fortress
The devlogs they've done showing off the new UI for the Steam version makes it look really promising. The keyboard interface is inconsistent and a complete mess in some cases and they're making a lot of that mouse driven.
MrMember··on US housing price higher than housing bubble 2008
>moving somewhere super rural

Why do you think you have to move somewhere super rural? I'm in the suburbs of a major city and decent sized 3 bedroom houses start at ~$200k.

MrMember··on Windows 11 available on October 5
Yes, Windows 11 Home will require an internet connection and Microsoft account on first startup.
MrMember··on Home Depot is introducing power tools that won’t work if they’re stolen
Pick it up and walk out. Depending on the store they might not even try to confront you. Depending on the city misdemeanor shoplifting might not be prosecuted at all.
MrMember··on The First Delta Force Trainee Class
Reminds me of Carlos Hathcock, generally considered to be the first example of a "modern" sniper. He would spends days crawling through fields in Vietnam deep in enemy territory just for a chance at one single shot on a high value target.
MrMember··on Linus Torvalds was paid $1.6M in 2018
I read the title and thought, "That's it?"
MrMember··on PinePhone – Open Source Smart Phone Supported by Major Linux Phone Projects
I bought a monitor a few years ago and out of the box it had a dead pixel in a pretty annoying spot. I looked up the manufacturer's replacement policy and they wouldn't take it back for just a single pixel.
MrMember··on SF's crime debate turns nasty
>A woman named Michelle Tandler posted a Tweet lamenting that “every single one of my friends is considering leaving SF.” She added that “My friends are scared for their children and their husbands are scared for their wives.”

>And for some reason, Kate Chatfield, who is a senior director on DA Boudin’s staff, thought this would be a good time for a public official to take a shot at a local resident. Chatfield said the “Husbands are scared for their wives,” was right out of the famously racist film, “Birth of a Nation,” which portrays the Ku Klux Klan as heroes.

This is absolutely insane to me. Someone expresses concern about crime and someone from the DA's office publicly compares them to the KKK? How is that in any way acceptable?

MrMember··on A Twitter addict realizes she needs rehab
I subscribe to RSS feeds. I use the AP's feed for example for general news.
MrMember··on It appears that Reddit is forcing me to use their app to see deep linked content
For reddit to follow Digg there has to be a viable alternative. People fed up with Digg could go to reddit. Where do people who are fed up with reddit go?
