MrMember··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
Wouldn't someone else step in? It was Yahoo for a while. Firefox market share is pretty pitiful these days but the default search engine is still worth something.
MrMember··on Which shows got their finale right, and which didn't?
Six Feet Under had arguably the greatest finale of all time. It's been like fifteen years since I watched it and I still think about it.
MrMember··on Why is my LG Washing Machine using 3.6GB of data/day?
For now. I could see a lot of these devices including a cell modem in the future.
MrMember··on Blueprint health protocol
Yeah I'm not really sure what to think about him. He gives off serious grifter vibes and at least some of his claims are probably overblown. On the other hand, who is he hurting? He's "experimenting" on himself and making the results available for everyone. He'll sell you some of the stuff he does but the details of his entire regimen are also freely given away for anyone who wants to do it themselves. He's an unusual person for sure.
MrMember··on AI can diagnose childhood autism from retinal photos
Ha, I've heard a similar story about diagnosing skin cancer from pictures of moles. They were really excited about the performance of the model but it turned out if the dermatologist was concerned about the size of a mole they would include a ruler in the picture to document the size. The NN wasn't trained to "diagnose skin cancer" it was trained to recognize rulers in pictures.
MrMember··on Shitflation, shrinkflation, inflation database
This was a while ago but a pack of frozen egg rolls I used to buy a lot said "approximately 6 egg rolls per box." I always thought it was funny they used "approximately" and I always had 6 egg rolls in the box. Until one time I got 5. I couldn't even be mad.
MrMember··on Shoplifting and frustrated customers plague self-checkout
Microcenter still does.
MrMember··on Shoplifting and frustrated customers plague self-checkout
Target has the best self checkouts I've ever used. 95% of the time I have no issues at all. Occasionally I might have to use the hand scanner on something if the barcode is faded, very rarely I might have to type in a code manually.
MrMember··on EVE Online – Down the Rabbit Hole [video]
If I had no other obligations I would probably play EVE sixteen hours a day. It's simply not a game I can play casually lmao. In my opinion it's the greatest MMO ever created.
MrMember··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
You can also VPN to a country that they don't serve ads to.
MrMember··on Firefox on the brink?
I've been using Firefox as my primary browser since 2005-2006ish. A site misbehaving because of it is a rare enough occurrence that offhand I can't remember any time that it has happened.

One issue I do come across occasionally, and I'm not sure if it's Firefox alone or the combination of add-ons I use in Firefox, is sites being overzealous with captchas. I find myself doing 3-5 captchas occasionally just to use a site.

MrMember··on Microsoft won't let you close OneDrive on Windows until you explain yourself
The same thing happened to me. Now I have two versions of "Documents" in different locations and not everything gets put in the same one. I'm done with Windows once 10 loses support, lately it seems like it's going out of its way to annoy me in as many ways as possible.
MrMember··on Ex-Kotaku staff go independent and launch Aftermath
RPS is a shell of its former self. The amazing writers from the early days all left years ago and it's mostly just an SEO spam site now.
MrMember··on Justine Bateman's Fight Against Generative AI in Hollywood
We're already starting to see this in video games. An upcoming shooter is using AI text to speech for the in game "announcers" and voice actors are not happy.

https://www.pcgamer.com/the-finals-uses-ai-text-to-speech-be...

It lets them add voice lines to the game almost immediately at very little cost. There's some debate over how good the results are but personally I wouldn't have been able to tell it was AI generated if I didn't know ahead of time (here's the game's trailer for reference).

MrMember··on Microsoft now demands to know why you won't use Edge when you download Chrome
It's crazy to me that so many of my gripes about Windows can be traced back to one person. He's going to single handedly drive me away from the OS.
MrMember··on Ask HN: What outdated tech are you still using and are perfectly happy with?
>Non-IoT everything (fridges, light-switches, TVs, thermostats, etc.): I think we're all on the same page on this one, so I'll just say this; they're pointlessly shite

I want as few things in my house connected to the internet as possible. My computers, my video game consoles, and my phone, that's it. I don't see the value proposition for connecting my appliances or my light bulbs or whatever else to the internet.

MrMember··on Google Pixel Watch 2
I've been buying previous generation Garmin watches and I could never go back. Earlier this year I bought a Fenix 6X Pro Solar for $400. It's not the latest and greatest but it's still a phenomenal watch at that price. During the summer I average maybe an hour of GPS a day and I still get a week and half of battery life easily. If I don't use the GPS at all it's 3-4 weeks depending on how much solar power it gets. And it has several power save modes that extend it even further if for some reason that isn't enough.
MrMember··on Ask HN: YouTube keeps suggesting vids I marked “not interested”. What can I do?
I have bash scripts set up to download new videos from specific channels using yt-dlp once a day. I don't even have to visit youtube anymore :)
MrMember··on Developers fight back against Unity’s new pricing model
I don't know, I think the unpredictability of how much you will owe Unity each month will be a big sticking point for all developers, big and small. A percentage of revenue is easy to account for; if we make this much money we will pay this much to Unity. A bill based on the vague "number of installs" calculated by a black box at Unity themselves is a financial disaster waiting to happen.
MrMember··on The trouble with supermarket self checkouts
If there were one industry standard app that could be used for most restaurants I might use it but there's no way I'm ever going to install an app and create an account for every restaurant I might go to.
MrMember··on Retirement savings simulator
I would absolutely retire today if I had $1.5 million in investments. I'm in my mid 30s.
MrMember··on Someone keeps trying to reset my Facebook password
I have firstinitiallastname@gmail.com and I get a lot of stuff meant for other people. Someone even used it to sign up for their bank, and said bank apparently didn't require verifying the email address. I don't even have that common of a name.
MrMember··on Farmers Insurance Laying Off 11% of Workforce, Citing Industry Challenges
In California home insurance companies cannot take into account any future forecasts (including climate change) when setting rates, only past events. There are also yearly caps on how much they can raise rates. The results of these policies on the state of home insurance in California speak for themselves.
MrMember··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
I have completely turned off notifications in Windows because I think they're worthless and recently Windows itself has started ignoring that setting and sending me ads through notifications.
MrMember··on Ridiculous captcha at GitHub to reset your password
That's assuming you can even reach an actual human through support.
MrMember··on Ruins of Emperor Nero’s Theater Discovered Near Vatican
The worst emperors of Rome did so many horrific things that some of the stories about them are bound to be embellished.
MrMember··on Cards as Weapons (1977)
I've always found card manipulation magic like Ricky Jay did to be some of the most impressive. The flashier magic can be interesting in other ways but card manipulation feels so pure. There aren't any gimmicks, nothing super flashy, it doesn't require any equipment the average person couldn't acquire for a few dollars, it's just the end result of untold thousands of hours of practice.
MrMember··on Why was the F-117 retired so quickly?
I loved how when they were first developing stealth technology the standard procedure was to build a wood model, mount it on a pole, and and check the radar cross section. Eventually it got to the point where the pole had a higher radar cross section than the model plane and they had to spend a lot of time and money developing a more "stealthy" pole.
MrMember··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
>I bet some subreddits will go permanently private or delete themselves over this.

Subreddits are run by volunteer moderators and are entirely at the whim of reddit. If any substantial subreddit tried to shut down or go dark permanently reddit would just remove the moderators responsible.

MrMember··on YouTube Is Killing Stories
YouTube search is so bad. I assume it's on purpose considering Google of all people should be able to figure out search. If the video you're looking for isn't in the top five results search is pretty much useless.
