MrMan··on Bankman-Fried being invited to speak at a New York Times event alongside Yellen
pretty sure the Bahamians have been paid off
MrMan··on Elon Musk fired dozens more Twitter staff the night before Thanksgiving
I dont think he is impulsive, he and his friends hatched the roadmap over many weeks and months. I think its a very standard playbook in terms of the lore of finance and M&A, but I think that the non-conforming part is that it's a social media company and turnaround tactics from the playbook might or might not work, especially when implemented by a team who has experience using twitter to market Tesla in a post-modern way, but perhaps doesnt realize that the three sided relationship between the company, users, and advertisers can be destabilized quite easily.

I dont know if Twitter had a core culture of excellence inside the bloat that exists in so many ad-driven companies, but the way the culling has happened seems almost deigned to destroy the engineering culture at the company, which I think is probably a miscalculation. The sad part is that people really are fungible to a certain extent because of the tools we have built to do software-based business. And it might be an overreaction to claim that just because the employees are being mistreated that the business of twitter is somehow doomed.

MrMan··on Warning – Google suspended GCP services for 'verification', lost my business
its nice on a personal level but a sign of how broken things are at GCP that an angel has to emerge from the clouds just at the last moment to save your livelihood? that is super creepy and not the way the information economy is supposed to work, in my opinion.

MrMan··on Effective Altruism Is about Getting Rich with a Clean Conscience
I dont think Charity has much of a track record compared to commerce. There are some edge cases where market failures create situations where progress is stuck but those are lots of times governance problems. Telling people how to govern themselves is at least as fraught as the idea that just showering money on non-profits will do anything useful, so it's a tough one. I think non-profits are a way to increase the velocity of money which increases commerce, so while I think a lot of altruistic posturing is bullshit, if it gets people to spend money instead of hoarding it, that is an overall good thing, but for the wrong reasons.
MrMan··on Elon Musk never cared if Twitter was a business failure–he wants a political win
the banks can't unload the twitter debt, that is just a fact
MrMan··on Launch HN: Kalshi (YC W19) – A regulated exchange for trading on events
its binary options, which have long and spotty history. The payout does not cover owernship of an asset and typically the payouts are adjusted to be overall quite disadvantageous for retail bettors. I would stay away, it doesn't matter how they try to rebrand it. do your own research on binary options as they say.
MrMan··on Ask HN: Why do you like Visual Studio Code?

MrMan··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
make sure to researched tested vs claimed range, Teslas have good range but fall short from claimed range by large %, there are cars that end up having the same or better range like the Taycan even though the claimed range from Porsche is less! do your own research, correlation is not your coin, etc

MrMan··on Sam Bankman-Fried tries to explain himself
except that is not true
MrMan··on Sam Bankman-Fried tries to explain himself
you are regurgitating crypto and libertarian propaganda meant to desensitize you to the corruption of what they are selling. the entire finance industry is not corrupt and this moral equivalence they try to construct to justify their crimes and antisocial behavior is false.

MrMan··on FTX Owes Money to More Than a Million People, Court Filing Suggests
that is by itself jail worthy
MrMan··on FTX’s balance sheet was bad
I worked on quant buy side for a long time and you dont just automatically come out of these places knowing one secret to making money trading. equally smart on paper people might be working on message passing, risk management, data analysis, special projects, also trading, simulator, database, and might spend 5 years in-house and not come away from the experience with knowledge which by itself represented major alpha.

for me just knowing how to setup a quant trading firm, how to choose prime brokers, how to find and select vendors, leased lines, how to setup paper work, cap intro relationships, exchange memberships, FIX certs, are of equal value as alpha tricks, and really I dont even see a lot of evidence that the Almeda / FTX people were particularly well-seasoned in any respect.

MrMan··on FTX’s balance sheet was bad
prop trading firm and a sell side firm or an exchange are not structured the same way. its like calling zebra and deer and giraffes the same animal.
MrMan··on Which one of these will be the biggest “unicorn” failure ever?
I also would ever use Robinhood instead of a reputable broker like TD Fidelity Vanguard IB etc. But not for the reasons you stipulated. Back office systems aren't put in place to "fleece" anyone.
