MrHamburger··on First Ever Recorded Use of ICBM in War
I think it is little bit arrogant from Russians to send relatively modern ballistic missile into enemy territory as remains of missile and MIRVs will be thoroughly studied by NATO and its allies. This can lead to better anti-missile technology.
MrHamburger··on First ICBM Launch in Combat?
To me it looks like Russia is trying to test if their ICBMs will get through western air defense as they had troubles with their Kinzal/Iskander ballistic missiles being shot down in some scenarios. There were also purges on Russian side because of this - https://mil.in.ua/en/news/russia-imprisoned-12-scientists-in...

I think there is no utility of using ICBM for targeting anything using conventional warhead. CEP is 100m and more, it is just waste of military resources.

So my guess is a test / show of force / terror bombing. Probably all 3 at the same time.

MrHamburger··on [dead]
You are typing that like mechanics would be constantly rebuilding engines and transmissions, while most of their main job are bumpers from minor crashes and cracked windshields.
MrHamburger··on Vivek Ramaswamy on X: "Will entire agencies be deleted? Answer: yes
Merging states together and centralizing stuff will reduce duplicitous bureaucracy and save money
MrHamburger··on Happy Men's Day! :)
I guess it is stemming from left leaning influencers on social media blaming white men for all ails in the world.
MrHamburger··on "We Will Pass Those Tariff Costs Back to the Consumer," Says CEO of AutoZone
Cheap inputs + cheap labor + tariffs will be still cheaper than same goods using expensive (tariffed) inputs + expensive labor
MrHamburger··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
No it is exactly the same. If people can't afford to live in mansions, then it makes no sense to build them. Nobody will buy it. It is a demand problem.
MrHamburger··on "We Will Pass Those Tariff Costs Back to the Consumer," Says CEO of AutoZone
But if alternatives are using input material which is under tariffs, then even tariffed goods will be better deal than such alternatives.
MrHamburger··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
So if people would have money, there would be a demand. His point still stands.
MrHamburger··on Biden Allows Ukraine to Strike Russia with Long-Range U.S. Missiles
What's the point of NATO membership, when chief elect is openly saying that he is not going to help if Russia will make move into Baltics.

Personally I would expect that Poland with cooperation with Czech Republic (they have whole nuclear research facility north of Prague) would be able to do it in short amount of time - less than 5 years.

MrHamburger··on Biden Allows Ukraine to Strike Russia with Long-Range U.S. Missiles
Control is very relevant here. The hardest part of nuclear weapon - plutonium core - was there. The fact that you don't have access keys from electronics which controls explosives around the plutonium core is kind of non-issue for a state actor.
MrHamburger··on Biden Allows Ukraine to Strike Russia with Long-Range U.S. Missiles
My guess is, that if USA will keep playing around and pretend that Ukraine is somebody else's problem to solve, they will find out that Eastern Europe can make a nuke too. Then what is USA going to do? Sanction Europeans? Then there is no reason to continue sanctioning Iran from Europeans perspective for exactly same thing.
MrHamburger··on Biden Allows Ukraine to Strike Russia with Long-Range U.S. Missiles
It is quite logical. Budapest Memorandum signed in 1994 where UK, USA and Russia guaranteed sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for nuclear weapons on Ukrainian soil which remained there after dissolution of USSR. If Russia wants to renege on Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine should get their nukes back.

Also you can see another side of the coin - Iran and DPRK would need to be insane to get rid of their nukes because only reason why big powers won't touch them is the nuclear poison pill, which Ukrainians gave up and look where they are.

MrHamburger··on We're going to see the return of diseases we have controlled for decades
Which will put a pressure on evolution of human race. Time for another post-Black death golden age.
MrHamburger··on Restart of Three Mile Island tests US appetite for nuclear revival
Cobalt 60 from radiotherapy machine can kill you in exactly same way as spent Uranium rod from a power plant. For human body there is no difference between those two.

And we are not even getting to burning coal and subsequent nuclear fallout from it, which is completely uncontrolled.

MrHamburger··on Restart of Three Mile Island tests US appetite for nuclear revival
> Well, then there is also the issue of long term storage of radioactive waste ...

You have that issue regardless if you have nuclear power plants or not as you have radiation devices in hospitals or industry.

MrHamburger··on IPv6 networks do apparently get probed
If you change your SSH port on your Linux machine you might be misidentified as Windows machine, because these usually does not have SSH, thus next step will go for RDP. Nothing there either.

Sure next step can be going for a port scan, but how big scan do you want to do before fail2ban or similar will lock you out?

MrHamburger··on We're going to see the return of diseases we have controlled for decades
This is a self correcting problem. These diseases will strike down weak people and antivaxxers. So more diseases means less demagoguery against 300 years of scientific discoveries.
MrHamburger··on Images of Spain's floods weren't made by AI. Trouble is, people think they were
Well then you have >>definitely real<< AI generated picture. I don't think that problem has a technological solution, but a regulatory one - each generated picture must be somehow marked (i.e. via a watermark invisible for human, but difficult to delete by a program) that it is AI generated. If a person or a company fails to do so, massive fines are on their way.
MrHamburger··on Earth Could Be Alien to Humans by 2500 (2021)
We will need technology of terraforming anyway in the future. So developing it to stabilize climate so current planet won't kill us is better motivation than developing it for Mars or Venus.

And I think that eventually we will ends up with massive shade between Earth and Sun, because it will be solution with least capital expenditure to achieve stable climate while not requiring great changes in our lives, as that seems to be issue with common folk and their general resistance to green solutions.

This achievement will then unlock ability to terraform Venus, because shading it is first step to cool it down.

MrHamburger··on Russia's Flying Wing Drone Downed in Ukraine Packed with Western Components
First prototype (and what was likely also shot down) has been flown on 2017, so at that time MAX22200 were still available. Getting Maxim today is difficult, but maybe buying unsold devkits and reusing chips from them would be easier than redesigning that electronic module which uses them. But it is a desperation move which I would be protesting against, even on consumer-grade electronics.
MrHamburger··on Germany to send out survey, mandatory for males, about willingness to fight
From what I have understood, problem is that Germans would need to change the constitution to allow women to be mandatory drafted too. But that's not gonna happen because you usually needs something like 2/3rd of whole government to agree on that.
MrHamburger··on Trump plans to repeal Biden's 2023 order and levy tariffs on GPU imports
So if I understand it correctly, cost of training AI will go up, which will probably burst the AI bubble?

MrHamburger··on Nintendo Switch successor will have backwards compatibility
Well now it makes sense why they were on a crusade to purge all Switch emulators from the face of the internet.
MrHamburger··on BYD added a Tesla-worth of production capacity over the past 3 months
Unless car arrives in 3 hours because it is morning peak and everyone wants to get to job.
MrHamburger··on BYD added a Tesla-worth of production capacity over the past 3 months
EV infra is also lot more fragile as we can see first hand in developed countries, while for ICE you essentially need a jerry can to fill it up.
MrHamburger··on BYD added a Tesla-worth of production capacity over the past 3 months
Only problem with this statement is that unless BEVs are subsidized they don't sell that well.
MrHamburger··on Employment Barometer in Germany Falls Further
Additionally state pensions are beginning to be a positive feedback loop with protentional to wreak havoc across Europe - there is not enough young people to keep the financial plane flying, but there is constantly growing amount of pensioners who don't care about the future. Thus populists have simple job: constantly promising increasing of pensions. Pensioners will then always outvote young ones and there will be no chance for a change.
MrHamburger··on In some areas of military strength, China has surpassed America
If Europe won't engage in the war directly, then it can base lot of economic growth on it - making weapons in factories being build today to supply Ukraine.
