MrDrMcCoy··on Show HN: NSL – WSL for Linux
Nspawn is a full system container engine with its own systemd environment, which makes it closer to LXC/Incus than Podman/Docker. You can do the single process thing in system containers or use a full init system in Docker/Podman, but the experience won't be as smooth.
MrDrMcCoy··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Currently going through Bobiverse, Dungeon Crawler Carl. Recently finished the Dark Profit Saga (Orconomics). Highly recommend all of them.
MrDrMcCoy··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
Colloquial "capitalism" today is just cronyism that in no way resembles the capitalism that Adam Smith wrote about. We really should move towards Rhine Capitalism, the only system that has stood the test of time and truly benefits everyone.
MrDrMcCoy··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I did. Cannabis in excess has not shown to be harmful.
MrDrMcCoy··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
> the rich pay their fair share

If there's a way to do that that doesn't require arbitrary thresholds that won't stand the test of time or in any way screw over regular people's investments, I'd love to hear about it.

MrDrMcCoy··on Windows 11½
Mozilla is not a Linux distribution or DE. Canonical is on my deny list.

> how often do you run into the software you want not being built for your distro?

Is this even the right question? The whole reason humans create software is to accomplish something. If software a is not available, but software b is and does the same thing nearly as well, why not spend 5 minutes to learn the thing?

MrDrMcCoy··on World Labs Is Joining AMD
Really, it's just the Python frameworks on AMD consumer GPUs that suck. AMD datacenter GPUs seem to work with them well enough, and llama.cpp crushes it for the rest of us.

Alcohol poisoning is a thing. I have yet to hear of a case of canabanoid poisoning. Canabanoids also don't lower your inhibition, which is why DUIs went down in states that legalized. The difference in risk could not be more stark.
MrDrMcCoy··on I Switched to Brave Browser
Adblocking is pretty poor in Vivaldi. I'm planning to migrate away as a result. Only thing that would keep me is if they adopted Brave's adblocker, which actually works.

Enough torches and pitchforks can accomplish a lot.

We need to push for ranked choice voting. It's the best way out of this hole we've dug.
MrDrMcCoy··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
I always notice higher traffic, aggression, and accidents around stressful events in the news. Those have been particularly frequent during this administration.
MrDrMcCoy··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 Series
All they have to do is support Windows and get their stuff upstreamed in the Linux kernel, no need for specific distro support. I'll never understand why SoC manufactures insist on bespoke kernel/distro pairings.
MrDrMcCoy··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
That what services that offer disposable and merchant-locked virtual cards are for. I have had good experiences with Privacy.com and Revolut.
MrDrMcCoy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
I think you're probably right where most people are concerned, but none of that held for me in my various attempts. I think I should amend a couple of the points I raised, though:

I wrote etymology when I meant morphology. Etymology is certainly useful to me and helps vocabulary stick, but I find morphology to be a useful building block that I need on the front-end of learning vocabulary. No curriculum I've found includes it.

Phonetic collisions were particularly difficult for me, as my early education intrinsically bound phonetics to the English alphabet in my mind, which made it very difficult for my memory to latch onto new associations that share Latin script. I think phonics are crucial, but I wish there was a good way to better steer the sound associations to morphemes instead of individual characters, so as to better make room for more than the one language you're trying to learn.

New point: I had already done some programming by the time I tried learning another language. My thought processes had already reshaped into a sort of compiler for all my language processing. The necessary precision of code extended into how I wrote, and that overinflated the importance of grammar into something I just couldn't see past before getting to the words themselves. I wanted the words that were useful to sentence structure ahead of all others so I could do something useful with the rest.

I expect this would all be pretty incomprehensible to most people.

MrDrMcCoy··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
My attempts to get Plasma mobile working, which is the shell I actually want, failed miserably. I can't imagine sxmo to be in any way pleasant.
MrDrMcCoy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
Confounding to learning language, on top of one's base ability to do do in general, are the teaching methods not meshing at all with the individual. For me, rote memorization of anything is nearly impossible, doubly so if the thing to be memorized has no immediate utility. "Conversational" language learning and similar that give you a bunch of vocabulary and bring in the grammar later are why I failed Spanish 1 three times. I need the grammar first, then words with etymology. It also helps to not fight with phonetic collisions between different languages using their own bastardization of Latin script, which is why I was far more easily able to meet my college language requirement by teaching myself classical Greek and translating the things I thought were interesting.
MrDrMcCoy··on AI Safety Is Mostly a Sex Cult
I think most people who are familiar with proper Rationalism are able to tell it apart from the subject of present-day movements. Those that aren't are right to criticize the harms that they see.
MrDrMcCoy··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
Not necessarily. Lots of variable factors play into how often a person might need to shower. Temperature, humidity, how prone you are to sweating in general, diet, hormonal balance, skin microbiome. Some months during a dry winter where I'm not doing much, I won't need to shower more than once a week to look and smell decent. When I spent a July in Cambodia, it was multiple times per day. When I was a kid, I barely sweat and once went nearly a month before I or anyone else noticed. As an adult, that is no longer possible.

There's a guy who discovered a bacterial culture that works better than any deoderant, and for him eliminated the need to use soap on the hair or body. He still showers and uses soap on his hands, but reported that his hair and skin have been so happy and healthy that soap no longer made any sense. Dig into A2-Biome if you're curious.

Would you consider sharing your config? I can't get anywhere near that with my Strix Halo, nor my AI Pro 9700 XT.
MrDrMcCoy··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
I have a Furiphone. Despite the hardware being plenty decent, the software is unbearably slow due to Phosh and libhybris.
MrDrMcCoy··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP

I desperately want to use it, but it runs on precisely no decent hardware as far as I can tell. My attempts to get it working on the fxtec and furiphones failed miserably.

GrapheneOS won't be interested in other hardware support, since the only devices that meet their hardware security standards are Pixels and the upcoming Motorola phone.
MrDrMcCoy··on Show HN: Scry, programmable internet search w/ congestion pricing
This is a very good thing, thanks! Have you talked with any of the smaller search engines like Kagi, Qwant, Brave, Mwmbl, DDG, etc to have this supplement the quality of their results? This seems like a big step towards breaking Google and Bing's dominance in search.
MrDrMcCoy··on Show HN: Microsoft Office running with Wine on Linux with no virtualization
That has been a lot less of a problem lately. Why not try again and open a bug report if there's an issue?
MrDrMcCoy··on I don't like passkeys
You can't search for passkeys, but you can search for logins by URL and check the much shorter list for passkeys. The good news is that having the passkey in Bitwarden means you can use it on another device.
