Moru··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
The current non-US movement is more based on the emerging government type in the USA, has nothing to do with the privacy laws.

There are apps you use to scan products in the store to make sure they have nothing to do with USA.

Moru··on Stalking the Wily Hacker: 40 years later – Cliff Stoll [video]
Yes, thank you! Our whole family of nerds enjoyed it and I had to explain quite a few things to daughter but not the over head projector at least, she did bump into that tech in school for some art project.

She just installed linux on the laptop for university study and got to hear about what people used before "more" and "less" :-)

Moru··on No AI* Here – A Response to Mozilla's Next Chapter
Exactly this. The black box in this case is a problem because it's not in my computer. It transfers the users data to an external entity that can use this data to train it's model or sell it.

Not everyone uses their browser just to surf social media, some people use it for creating things, log in to walled gardens to work creatively. They do not want to send this data to an AI company to train on, to make themselves redundant.

Discussing the inner workings of an AI isn't helping, this is not what most people really worry about. Most people don't know how any of it works but they do notice that people get fired because the AI can do their job.

Moru··on No AI* Here – A Response to Mozilla's Next Chapter
No, a tank is obviously better at all those things. They should clearly be used by everyone, including the paratrooper. Never mind the extra fuel costs or weight, all that matters is that it gets the job done best.
Moru··on Microsoft increases Office 365 and Microsoft 365 license prices
The office you are talking about is not what it used to be a few decades ago. I am not into this world but what I know of it is like you are comparing a tool to the whole workshop. No, the tool does not replace the workshop, the tool is a very small part of the workshop.

There are alternatives but when you have bought into the full ecosystem of MS, it will take a lot of work to move.

(Full disclosure: I work with both Linux and Windows at a small company where Office means what you mean with office. They are all using libreoffice but call it office)

Moru··on The Lost Machine Automats and Self-Service Cafeterias of NYC (2023)
Not only american portions. I'm a remote worker since 20+ years. My first visit to the main workplace eating lunch was a revelation. The portion size was gigantic! And my coworkers (none having a physical job) was done within 15 minutes while I took a lot longer to not even finish half of my portion. It was at least five times my normal lunch portion. Insane. And the prices were lower than our village.

Moru··on 183M Gmail Passwords Leaked
If I understood the follow up blogpost right, it states that there is a lot of email adresses where the only hit is the email domain so they are filtering away that as false positives. Not all stolen credentials are properly aligned and encoded with ; on the correct place I guess :-)

There might be a lot less gmail adresses showing up as pwned now.

Moru··on Tags to make HTML work like you expect
Not to mention the functions are also translated to the other language. I think both these are the fault of Excel to be honest. I had this problem long before Google came around.

And it's really irritating when you have the computer read something out to you that contains numbers. 53.1 km reads like you expect but 53,1 km becomes "fifty-three (long pause) one kilometer".

Moru··on Iceland reports the presence of mosquitoes as climate warms
It's not completely true that the mosquitos don't carry things here. We do have something called Tularemia [1] (Harpest). Also it seems the first mosquitos for the season are more potent that later during the year.

And for personal anecdotal evidence, my wife gets more problems with mosquitos here than I do. When we visit her home country I get more problems than she does.

Moru··on Why the open social web matters now
A small cost to enter just means the capital still controls the narrative. As long as we can't even stop bullying physically in schools, we will not be able to have a civil social media. Start in the kindergarten and fix the problems with next generation or it will just get worse.
Moru··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
You could even download a wikipedia article, do your changes to it and upload it to 250 githubs to strengthen your influence on the LLM.
Moru··on Signal Protocol and Post-Quantum Ratchets
It's only a certain type of man that they are talking about. We are not that type of men I guess. Can't say I know anyone what that problem to be honest. And yes, I have heard that saying before. Didn't work then and doesn't work now.
Moru··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
The 1000 civilians dead were in connection to food distribution. That number should be 0 even in a war zone.

Israel has been taking over palestinian villages for a very long time, murdering the inhabitants. The government is fueling the hate. They aren't even affraid to say it out aloud. I have seen several reports where they are calling for genocide.

Moru··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
I watch independent news from official sources, not an american news source.
Moru··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
Sorting dates: This is why there is an international standard of having YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss in the order we have it. We got to learn this in school in the 80-ies because sorting paper documents would be more logical and easier to find stuff. So way before most people got computerized.

It just happens to be the most logical way to sort for computers too, as long as humans are involved in the usage of the data.

Moru··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
The killings are not only direct hits with bullets. They are also blocking food, medicine and healthcare. Noone can survive without food. The goal is not to kill hamas, that was just the excuse, it is to clear the ground for new settlements.
Moru··on The story of DOGE, as told by federal workers
There are organisations keeping track of this.

"All the extremist-related murders in 2024 were committed by right-wing extremists of various kinds, with eight of the 13 killings involving white supremacists and the remaining five having connections to far-right anti-government extremists. This is the third year in a row that right-wing extremists have been connected to all identified extremist-related killings."

Moru··on Low Earth Orbit Visualization
A true-to-scale visualization would however be entirely misleading for everyone since it would be completely empty. Just look up in the sky at a clear sky. You would hardly see a single satelite and a visualization on a computer screen would show even less due to pixel size.
Moru··on Americans crushed by auto loans as defaults and repossessions surge
Yes, this is very much the case here in Sweden. When people started thinking about environment and second hand became fashion, all the second hand stores suddenly became as expensive as buying new. I have always been buying second hand so I'm a bit miffed.
Moru··on DuckDB NPM packages 1.3.3 and 1.29.2 compromised with malware
Yes, this is a classic scam vector. We really should stop training users to click links / call phonenumbers in sms and emails.
Moru··on DuckDB NPM packages 1.3.3 and 1.29.2 compromised with malware
There is companies that send email with invoices where you have to click a link. There is no way of logging in on their site to get to the invoice. It is an easy fix for them (we use the same invoicing company as they do so I know). All they need to do is click "Allow sending bills directly to customers bank". Every month I get the email, I use the included chat function on the webpage to ask when they will enable this and it's always not possible. Mabe some day.

I wish we could stop training people to click links in random messages just because we want to be able to track their movements online.

Moru··on DuckDB NPM packages 1.3.3 and 1.29.2 compromised with malware
Some registrars make this easy. Think it was cloudflare that has a button for "Do not allow email from this domain". Saw it last time I set up a domain that I didn't want to send email from. I'm guessing you get that question if there is no MX records for the domain when you move to cloudflare.
Moru··on Unofficial Windows 11 requirements bypass tool allows disabling all AI features
Windows has always been backward compatible with old hardware. There has never been a big problem where you couldn't just upgrade to next version on the same computer. This big jump is not a good one for MS, it is locking out a lot of people that would be customers and are now getting Linux Mint instead. I have several friends that are non-techies and installed Mint on their own without any problems. No support needed even, nothing close to how they need support for Windows. They have dualboot so their old games work on Windows and everything else on Linux. Sooner or later that will be gaming on Linux and Windows never get booted again.

It's not AI skeptics, it's users that does not know how to type — and is vulnerable to hype.

Moru··on Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT
Thanks, have tried that one but I just don't write enough and the special characters I need is natively on my keyboard. But it's very nice for those that actually do write other things than code :-)
Moru··on Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT
I missed the point of the leaderboards completely. It is to show exactly that when you get blamed for using AI to write. You can point out that you already used it in 2009 or whatever. For that it is very useful yes :-)
Moru··on Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT
This is why we only had ascii in the start. You don't need those other characters anyway. (For english...)

Meanwhile there are a lot of languages and cultures. Somewhere all those characters were useful for something. My Atari had a very fun utility that gave you a compose-key that could combine just about everything on the keyboard to access all those weird characters of the extended ascii table. <compose>+ao would give you "a" with a ring on top (å), <compose>+ae gave the danish welded together character that I can't even type any more on windows.

The idea came from some unix thing I believe.
