'Their' is practical not ideological - Sam could be Samuel or Samantha, and I didn't know which. Also, bring up the use of 'their' for unknown gender with Shakespeare and Austen, who both did it.

The only one being 'ideological' here is you, getting worked up over basic grammar that's been around longer than Modern English. Go out and touch some grass.

If you enjoyed that, the short stories are quite good. qntm = Sam Hughes, and some of their work is published under that name.

MollyRealized··on Care Doesn't Scale
I don't know if I agree with the premise of the article. At the very least, you can make sure 50,000+ people have food daily. That scales. [1]

MollyRealized··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
At the time (and it was a few years ago), I found BBEdit to be rather amazing - or at least equally a product raised with care in its ecosystem over decades of use.
MollyRealized··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
Very much agreed. There's certain turns of phrase that human beings rarely use but AIs immediately grasp for.

Then again, this reminds me of the saying I've heard, that AIs now are at the dumbest point they will be in our lives. Presumably at some point, it will be difficult for human beings to distinguish it or even have their 'instinct' set off.

Pinboard's creator has some history ... right here on this website. Later I will see if I have the links still. They (in my opinion) did not behave honorably with people's subscriptions.

No disrespect intended by this, but I'm a little confused. What makes a direct contradiction of what Google said a reliable statement? Is it just pessimism bias?

MollyRealized··on Tell HN: Burnout is bad to your brain, take care
I've found a solution of sorts to this all. At least one that works for me, I'll add that caveat.

It basically rests in the concept - it doesn't have to be true, it can simply be the mental model by which you operate - that we are all natural multiples, and that DID is when that system goes askew due to trauma.

As such, I am able to characterize the part of me that demands perfection, that requires things, as a soldier or as a survivor self. But I make sure that there is also a parent in the mix. I make sure that self-care is part of the makeup.

Another thing that has helped me - and it is a lesson I wish I had not learned this way - is that coping mechanisms can outlive their usefulness and kill you. I had a bipolar friend. He found a way to quiet his voices enough that he could sleep. That way was getting drunk. He died from alcohol poisoning. His coping mechanism killed him. I still miss him very much, and although I tend not to cry, his memory still easily brings me to tears. They're in my eyes now.

That can happen with any coping mechanism. Nearly all our coping mechanisms when brought too far can actually, physically kill us. My own was emotional eating.

There's lots more - and these concepts can be investigated more under the terms "integrated family systems", "parts work", and "ego family systems", among others - but the basic idea is that you have to balance out the part of you that is intent on keeping you alive by demanding perfection, by creating a part of you that loves yourself - not cheesily, not hippie-style, just loves yourself. For some, it is the parentage you may not have had, and it may be foreign, and you may need help adopting these attitudes. But there are people out there who want to help you, just out of the goodness of their professions and hearts; seek them out.

Just a suggestion: don't use the words "Google Calendar" in your name. I know that's what it does, but stuff with trademarks, etc., etc. - Google might reach out and ask/demand you change the name.

MollyRealized··on Ask HN: Why Implement "Something Went Wrong" Error Messages?
I appreciate the answers thus far. Still, it feels as if these errors are not useful for situations where there's virtually no existing accessible support for the end user for the product, i.e., Google, Facebook. In these cases, the developer may be able to look at the logs of that moment, but the likelihood that they'll even receive the complaint is next to nothing.
MollyRealized··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
I am completely with you.

For me, I've written myself a Google Apps script - to be more accurate, AI did, but with my interaction - that e-mails a "humidity forecast" as to how wet the next six days are going to feel to me in a simple way. I don't know who came up with the categories I've placed them in - it seemed to be common weather information.

MollyRealized··on Ask HN: Struggling with poor memory and executive function. What to do?
I'm going to turn 50 in less than a month. Up until very recently, I had undiagnosed CPTSD and ADHD.

Trauma disorders, not to put too fine a point on it, fuck up your memory something fierce. CPTSD in particular can cause emotional flashbacks, where you're not audiovisually experiencing the prior trauma, but your brain is playing back the emotions. Thus, the emotional dysregulation.

I would strongly echo other people's comments here about therapy, a big benefit to me. I've always seen it as something with no stigma - you are just adding tools to your mental toolbelt. There is a good book by Pete Walker on complex PTSD; it may be worth a buy to see if it sounds familiar to you.

I also would suggest to you this: one of the best slogans I've ever heard is that we don't see other people's films, we see their highlight reels. You may have 100 different places you want to go. You may think everyone is going to each of their 100 different places.

But be kind to yourself. Believe it or not, it's not just an emotionally kind idea, it's a good one from a productivity viewpoint. If you're attacking yourself, you're putting yourself into fight-flight mode, and that redirects a lot of blood flow towards the more reactionary, less cognitive parts of your brain. Higher-order thinking is actually easier when you are not attacking yourself.

Hope this is helpful.

I am not a lawyer. I've worked with lawyers on corporate issues for a very large chunk of my career.

Are we talking 'primary place of business' or 'address of registered agent'?

Two very different things. There are entities that basically act as centralized places for service of process - just like banks act as centralized places for financial transactions, etc.

MollyRealized··on So long, and thanks for all the bytes
Honestly, and I don't know if he'll have an opportunity to read this, but as someone who's both a computer geek and has dabbled in improv and comedy improv, he may find that coding and comedy writing are not entirely separate paths.

There's definitely a STRUCTURE to successful comedy. Certain things have to be in certain conjunctions. Yes, there are definitely times when anticomedy will work, or deadpan comedy, but it's not an utter free-for-all.

If as a person you (yes, whomever's reading this comment) ever want to investigate what I mean, shell out for the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improv Manual [1]. It's fascinating reading on the structure of something you've simply enjoyed without thinking.
