> It is insane how much George Lucas has edited the original Star Wars trilogy. I think no movies have had more edits over time than Star Wars.

To such a sentiment, I can only say ... maclunkey.

MollyRealized··on An update on Wayback Machine access
I know I'm coming to this post rather late, but there's actually a legal consequence to this as well. So many attorneys and law firms rely upon reference to the Wayback Machine as legal proof of a website's state as of a certain date. If more and more companies begin to opt out, or if that becomes less and less reliable, there may literally be changes in lawsuit outcomes based on the sudden unavailability of evidence. IANAL, but I am a litigation legal assistant. (Out of work and Chicago-based, if anyone knows of someone looking for a tech-aware assistant.)

MollyRealized··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I scanned my grandmother's books - mainly autobiographical, she was a medical missionary in China and India, and children's - for this very reason. She had five children, who all had families, grandfamilies, and in some cases great-grandfamilies, meaning that copies of her books became rare.

As silly as it sounded, as a child who grew up with Trek and TNG, I wanted some far-flung descendant to be able to generate her in a hologram, and to read her words.

As such, I made the decision to destroy my own copies of her books so that they could be scanned for this purpose and stored on the Internet Archive. It was the only practical method at that time. But it would be wonderful if somehow technology advanced quickly in this area so that it was easier to scan books non-destructively.

(The one issue I find dissatisfying about the process is that I could not substitute my own OCR of her work (some done, more planned) for the Archive's often substandard automated OCR. No disrespect to the Archive by this, and hopefully at some point they will re-scan with better software..)

In case anyone would like to check them out: https://archive.org/details/@mollyrealized/uploads

(A warning for those who do: my grandmother describes people as small - her Chinese cook and her Indian patients (she was a nurse), yes, but also her own daughter, her husband, and an upstate New York appliance salesman who calls her a pretty little woman. Applied to an elderly Chinese woman it carries a weight it doesn't carry applied to an American one. She also uses "coolie," ordinary in the 1930s and not now. Overall her writing, and the work it records, shows an ongoing desire to be warm to, to respect, and to understand people who weren't American. She and my grandfather went out to build and upgrade hospitals. They helped first and preached to those who wanted to hear it. As her grandchild, I believe I can accurately say that love and respect were what was in her heart.)

My grandparents were Americans in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. My grandfather was shot at by an inebriated Japanese soldier. If the gun hadn't jammed twice in a row, you wouldn't be speaking to me.

MollyRealized··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Playing this out in my mind, exactly how early in the process would they assume said person would stop having a right to delete their phone data? Suppose I am in the car, and am told to wait in the car while such-and-such? Or suppose I do so after being instructed to get out, but before doing so, so I am within my car's property and/or not yet detained or in custody? There's going to be a lot of legal questions in this case about where the line should be re-set or re-drawn. And it's also all stupid and in violation of the Fifth Amendment, at least IMO.

MollyRealized··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
I will say - and this is just my own experience and not a certain userwide trend response - that one benefit of LLMs is that they are able to take an annoyed observation and format it into a pretty stellar bug report, and then the human being can work on spit-polishing. Having the middle part of the composition automated is a real benefit (at least IMO) - I've been a better reporter.

I previously reported on my own and was ignored; now, not so much. I assume that the assistance by the LLM is providing needed detail or formatting. (Yes, I am reading what I am submitting and making sure it is optimal before sending it.)

IANAL, IANYL, and I am not his lawyer. I did work with publishing companies to get my grandmother's books freed up for CC0/public domain, but I'm at most a talented layman (and legal administrative assistant, but not in IP).

As far as I can understand from what the blog's author reproduced, it looks as if the problem was that his DMCA requests may have not been compliant. Go to [1] and do a Ctrl-F downward for "Elements of Notification."

If I were filing a DMCA request with Google, I would do it as follows, matching the requirements laid out for a valid DMCA notice. The below should not be considered legal advice or the practice of law.

MollyRealized··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
2025 was a difficult year for me. I am trans, and transitioning at a late age (post-50s). I am confronting a lot of my own self-hatred in the process. It is also a discouraging thing to be trans in this current national (sometimes global) climate. I also had a cardiac episode. There were definite achievements, but it was unabashedly a mix. I'm hoping 2026 will be a better year in most respects where I can build on the good parts of 2025.

I'll also have to add, though, that you'd have to figure out a way for it to be cross-platform or live outside just macOS. Unfortunately, that's a very uncommon choice in the legal world (or anywhere else).
