Molitor5901··on Chocolate Consumption, Cognitive Function, and Nobel Laureates (2012)
Needs a (2012) tag and you need an account to NEJM to access. Can't find it via PubMed etc.
Molitor5901··on What Happens After A.I. Destroys College Writing?
The future will be oral examination, and similar to American law schools, students will have to write by hand and pass oral examinations.
Molitor5901··on National Archives at College Park, MD, will become a restricted federal facility
I have a researcher card, it's not an arduous process. The staff are very kind. When you show up to the National Archives in Washington, DC., prepare to encounter a general group of 2 dozen pros carrying scanners, laptops, etc. It's quite the experience.

I don't see this is that big of a deal. It's open, you can access it, but they are controlling more. Given the propensity for the theft and destruction of archives documents in the past, I'm ok with more security.

Molitor5901··on Men, Where Have You Gone? Please Come Back
Society went on a binge for about 10 years demonizing men and masculinity, turning dates into job interviews, and courtship into a dream; the apps have made it even worse, i.e. Bumble. No wonder they're turning off, it's just not worth it. One wrong statement, one wrong interaction, and they're afraid of getting put on TikTok.

It's not women, it's society as a whole deciding to take a giant shat on simple being male.

Molitor5901··on Gov. Greg Abbott vetoes THC ban
Given the amount of profits and taxes raised through cannabis legalization, and the volume of voters who want it, only the most narrowly focused, dogmatic politician seems to oppose legalization.

Full legalization is coming, one way or another, and states opposing it are only hurting themselves.

Molitor5901··on Backlash to artificial dye grows as Kraft ditches coloring for Kool-Aid, Jell-O
Which is the worst part about all of this: It took government pressure and calling them out to force a change. My anger at government is why they didn't do this SOONER? Why did it take someone like RJF jr. to move this needle? After all the people we've had at Sec. of Agriculture, HHS, and FDA Commissioners..

I don't think this was because people were putting pressure, otherwise the sheer numbers of those communities would have done something by now. It only required one person in power to say enough, fix this.

Molitor5901··on Backlash to artificial dye grows as Kraft ditches coloring for Kool-Aid, Jell-O
Pet food is some of the most unsanitary "food" on earth. A lot of it is mass produced overseas with little to no regard as to the safety of the ingredients, and I would venture to say at least half of it is adulterated. We only find out about it when large numbers of pets start dying.

Molitor5901··on Backlash to artificial dye grows as Kraft ditches coloring for Kool-Aid, Jell-O
What bugs me the most about companies like Kraft is that they could have replaced artificial dyes and ingredients any time they wanted to, but didn't. Clearly these companies are in it to make money, and they will sell the public whatever the public will eat, synthetic ingredients be damned, but maybe.. just maybe the government should be much, much more restrictive on the ingredients that goes into our foods...
Molitor5901··on Tesla blows past stopped school bus and hits kid-sized dummies in FSD tests
I think the idea of self-driving needs to be strongly re-evaluated. There are countless videos of people in their Tesla's driving down the road.. from the back seat. FSD is simply not feasible right now, but it seems that when people let Tesla Take the Wheel, they are easily duped into assuming it will always work - when it doesn't.

Until there are federal standards and rigorous testing of self-driving vehicle technologies they should not be installed, or advertised.

Molitor5901··on That 'unsubscribe' button may be a scam
If only "delete and report as spam" actually worked. For years I've gotten spam text messages and the report as spam doesn't seem to work. Maybe it's different with other carriers.
Molitor5901··on That 'unsubscribe' button may be a scam
I've always felt this way, any indication that you are there and receiving the email is just a system somewhere a long the line opting you into something else. My general rule for some time now is to report it as spam, and block the domain. Never respond, never acknowledge. Same with telephones, if I don't recognize the number I just don't answer.
Molitor5901··on Ex-FCC Chair Ajit Pai is now a wireless lobbyist
The revolving door is tragic. I work among policymakers, people who have spent years at FCC, FAA, FDA, and when it's time to leave those agencies where do they go? To the revolving door. Policy is such a highly specialized field that the only place to get a job is with a government affairs firm, or company working in that industry who needs your expertise to.. work with government.

It's like any other specialized industry. Your skills are not always transferable and it makes the job pool quite narrow, and geographic.

Molitor5901··on A tool for burning visible pictures on a compact disc surface (2022)
Yeah! I have had that exact same feeling! The one I remember burning the most was a collection of photos and movies of my family. I printed across the disc a photo of everyone. It was just so cool, even in black and white, but I always held back because they were a little expensive, and I wanted to save them for something really special! Had they been the same price as other discs.. I think I would have used them more.
Molitor5901··on Rents fall in most U.S. metros since 2023, demand struggles to match supply
If there wasn't anyone renting at the high prices, then they would sit empty, but someone must be renting them. Otherwise the price would have to come down or they stay empty.
Molitor5901··on Rents fall in most U.S. metros since 2023, demand struggles to match supply
My opinion is there is not really a housing shortage, instead, there is a shortage of housing where people want to live. Take any populous city and you will find the cute, walk-able neighborhoods that everyone wants to live in. Because of that, they have higher rental prices.

There is plenty of housing, but in a capitalist market of supply versus demand, the loudest group are going to be those who want to live in the expensive housing but can't afford it.

Molitor5901··on A tool for burning visible pictures on a compact disc surface (2022)
I fondly remember LightScribe, that was a pretty awesome technology.

Do you receive Food Stamps? The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal tax credit available to employers who hire individuals from certain target groups who have a difficult time finding employment. One of the qualifiers is being on "food stamps."

https://detr.nv.gov/Page/Work_Opportunity_Tax_Credit

It's an easy process to get certified as a business and take advantage of the credit. You might share this with prospective Nevada employers.

Molitor5901··on Old payphones get new life, thanks to Vermont engineer
Wow! The resource load from Core77.com's website is unusually high and I can't quite figure out why. Ublock is working overtime.
Molitor5901··on Oh fuck! How do people feel about robots that leverage profanity?
My first question would be: Why? As in: Why do we even need or want to program robots to use profanity?
Molitor5901··on Gemini in Chrome
I wish companies would stop pushing LLMs on us. If I want to use an LLM I will use it, but I would prefer to remove the button for it. It feels .. like an encroachment I didn't ask for.

Maybe I'm just getting old enough to be called a Luddite..

Molitor5901··on Typing 118 WPM broke my brain in the right ways
I was rather proud of myself at 18 as I typed 110 wpm with two fingers. My hands always felt too big for keyboards and so I learned to type with two fingers and my thumbs on the spacebar. Overtime I just memorized the keyboard that way.. until my fingers started breaking down requiring double hand carpal tunnel surgery. That forced me to learn to type with all fingers, much slower, but I can at least type as fast as I think.
Molitor5901··on Doge cuts to USAid blamed for 300k deaths – most of them children
Rather than dismantling USAID it should have been reformed. The U.S. should have a single point of foreign aid, but that aid should be highly structured, audited, and at least a few legal constraints that cannot be adjusted or reinterpreted by future generations.

I agree, at this point it does seem like there was enormous fraud at USAID and some very bad behavior. I can only deduce that the reason why it stayed hidden for so long was that, politically, if not economically, everyone with something to lose was benefiting.

Molitor5901··on Investigating AI Manipulation in Viral Chinese Paraglider Video
I think it's validation. Consider if you were wanting to perfect AI to be very hard to distinguish, what better way than to crowd source it by putting on social media? The fear is when it's perfect and someone puts you in the middle of a very illegal situation; prove it wasn't you.
Molitor5901··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
Airlines are always doing a negative to consumers. Squeezing passengers, gouging, treating them like they're numbers on a spreadsheet - knowing their options are limited - seems modus operand by the airlines.

We need a passenger bill of rights, not just for the airlines, but also how passengers are treated in airports, by security, and concrete cause of action for consumers when airlines misbehave.

Molitor5901··on Getting a Cease and Desist from Waffle House
After all the examples of brands handling things badly, you should know better. From Bud Light to Peloton, corporate-customer relations is not a new topic. There are different ways to handle this. Waffle House chose a path which now has however many people on Hckrnews making up their minds in both positive, and negative ways. That's not what a company wants.

The least dickish thing to do is to not be a dick.

Molitor5901··on Getting a Cease and Desist from Waffle House
I think we all see Waffle House's side of this, but there is a best, better, and worst way to engage a customer. A cease and desist is the worst, it's taking something which could have been handled by PR, to a legal threat. Regardless of Waffle House's legal rights, which they do have, from a public perception and way to run a company it was not the right approach. They should have embraced this guy and his website, engage him, and through that channel let him know "hey, you can't use our trademarks, etc. so you'll need to rebrand, but we love what you're doing and want to help."

Vastly different approach with a much better upswing.

Molitor5901··on Getting a Cease and Desist from Waffle House
I would have handled it better, not with lawyers but with PR people.
Molitor5901··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
Did you have an expectation of privacy using Telegram? I think that's the real issue here. If you were paying for Telegram, then I would say yes, those conversation should not be handed over to xAI. But, if you were ostensibly not paying for it, then I think it should be assumed that use of the service is considered consent to take that and use it as they please.

So yeah, it's almost certain that everything you ever put into Telegram is in Grok.

Molitor5901··on Driverless Semi Trucks Are Here, with Little Regulation and Big Promises
Good question, I think human truck drivers are needed in the city where traffic is less uniform, than say a two lane highway going in just two directions.
Molitor5901··on Getting a Cease and Desist from Waffle House
Terrible response from Waffle House. After all this time they should know better.
