MoeDrippins··on Google Public DNS
I've used OpenDNS since they became publicly known and have never gotten a redirect that I can remember. Did I configure that somehow?
MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: Where do you live?
Suburb of Atlanta, here. (Alpharetta)
MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Small company. Financial software. Yeah, that seemed a lot better a year or so ago.

But I've been at this a few years, this recession too shall pass.

MoeDrippins··on Mythryl Programming Language
My apologies; I figured the "et. al." would have covered that.
MoeDrippins··on Reusable static sheets that turn walls (or any surface) into a whiteboard.
I've used them as well. To me they are TOO thin (though I understand why). They're too small, take on too much of the substrate's texture, and suffer the problems "unwind" mentioned.

Would love to try that paint, but I have a (perhaps neurologically unsound) love for really, really big whiteboards. Me trying to compensate for something, perhaps...?

MoeDrippins··on Mythryl Programming Language
Not sure if this is the reddit (et. al.) effect, but man that site is sllllloooowwwww for me.

I'm not so sure RMS saying something offensive is unpredictable. WHAT he says, sure, but that he will do it is almost a given.

He came to my college in 1983 or so and evidently his rantings haven't changed since at least then.

(Yeah, yeah; my college, 1983. "You kids get off my yard"...)

MoeDrippins··on Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus
> Higher detection rates is not better. Higher detection rates just means more false positives.

Awesome, so the machine I have with NO AV software at all with a detection rate of 0 must be the bestest!

MoeDrippins··on Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus
Anecdotal, I know, but a few times I've UNinstalled Norton on my father-in-law's machines, replaced with either AVG or Avast, and stopped its incessant HD activity, speeding it up quite a bit.
MoeDrippins··on Symantec: it’s dangerous to rely on free antivirus
In other news, Microsoft says Linux is a bad choice.
MoeDrippins··on Bing adds tweets from prominent tweeters to its results
This almost feels "desparate" by Microsoft. Keep throwing stuff at Bing until it ... what, hits some magic "we love it!" threshold?
MoeDrippins··on Twitter Grows Uncomfortable With The Use Of The Word Tweet In Applications
I was uncomfortable with it when twitter first came out just due to the sheer ridiculousosity of it.
MoeDrippins··on New Dyson vaccum cleaner has "switched reluctance" motor, producing 104,000RPM
Hope it's got a scatter guard around it. Yeesh!
MoeDrippins··on Widespread Rackspace Outage. DFW datacenter unreachable.
Genuine question here. I've heard these stories before (and lived through one at a company, but under very different circumstances), and it always amazes me that anyone would let a generator run out of diesel. How can that happen? I understand the fuel tanks on these things are enormous and you can't just run to QT and get a couple gallons to tide you over, but they had to have been filled by SOMETHING initially, right? How can it be that whatever that was, can't be repeated?

Do HA plans not cover this contingency? Do they not specify that someone immediately calls a fuel truck the SECOND the generator kicks on?

MoeDrippins··on Where is USENET?
Depending on what you mean exactly by "in the past", part of the issue is the people that had usenet available to them at a given point in time. Early on, it was the rare individual that could get access to it at all, and those that could were the geeky nerdy guys (I count myself among those, by the way, just not as smart), and the ones that even WANTED to if they could were the elite of that small group.

Too, there simply WAS no such thing as SPAM (as we know it now) then.

So what you see now is largely an artifact of the ubiquity of access.

IMO.

What about it is awesome, exactly? I keep trying to give it a fair shake, but it's not got the critical mass of awesomeness to make me give up something familiar. In fact, I don't see a single thing about it better than what I'm used to.

I don't mind switching, but I honestly don't see any advantage to doing so. But I'm probably missing something, so am looking for knowledge from others. The only concrete thing I've gotten so far is from a buddy of mine who works for MS, so ... not quite unbiased, there.

MoeDrippins··on A profile of computer pioneer Gary Kildall [video]
Great, great video. Watched this and all the Computer Chronicles I could get my hands on a few years back. Good times.
MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: How old were you when you got your first computer?
My 400 DID have 64k and a real keyboard (both add-ons).

I was 16, but that was 1982. No intertubes. No printer. No RS-232. Cassette tapes.

MoeDrippins··on What Killed Smalltalk: My Balls
I don't normally like Giles' stuff much, but I read this one and kept thinking to myself; "yep. Yep. Yeah, he's right there. Yep."

Nice one, Mr. Bowkett.

MoeDrippins··on What database would you use to store (min) 10 billion objects?
Isn't this sort of question how Nedry got "found out" as to what his super secret assignment was on Jurassic Park?
MoeDrippins··on Why Firefox Has Jumped the Shark
Actually, I'm using that right now. I've used priv in the past so it's not quite so foreign. I'm finding chrome+priv actually usable.

Still waiting for something a bit more "on the fly right click" configurable, for my ADHD moments. =)

MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: ways to obtain critical mass?
> People are looking for a way to kill some time.

You think so, eh? Look at the apps coming out that track your time, that let you restrict yourself from killing time, etc.

On what basis do you make such a proposition? (I'm not busting your balls here, I'm genuinely curious.)

MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: "How-Tos" for Rolling Your Own Short URLs?
Exactly. The "win" tinyurl.com (etc.) was that someone had the foresight to see the need at all and do it, not that it was hard to do.

Amazon got patents on less.

MoeDrippins··on Ask HN: Any tips for living cheaply in SF?
> Now I have another reason to go: get away from hot Seattlish weather

As someone who lives in Atlanta, this sentence about made me spit coffee out my nose... =)

(FWIW, I'd love to move to Seattle area, but it's just not in the cards for me.)

MoeDrippins··on [dead]
C'mon, man! Andromeda strain!
MoeDrippins··on Why Firefox Has Jumped the Shark
> I dig plugins as much as the next guy, but it's not enough to make me open Firefox...

Then you don't, in fact, dig the plugins as much as THIS next guy. Mind you, it's the only thing that brings me back to FF, but if Chrome supported even just adblock, I'd jump in a second. But the plugins are its killer feature, ^2.

MoeDrippins··on Masterminds of Programming: Conversations with the Creators of Major Programming Languages
UML?
MoeDrippins··on Is the supremacy of object oriented programming coming to a close?
Also curious. Horizontal scaling, distribution, concurrency; that's where I see the tech heading. I think whatever will make those easier to deal with will have a huge advantage going forward.

> because some people can't tell the difference between funny and not.

If you can't tell, it's not.

MoeDrippins··on Heretical Thoughts About Science and Society, by Freeman Dyson
> From my point in view, encouraging scientists to be socially/politically active is a good thing (what's the alternative?)

Maybe thinking scientifically?
