Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on Quebec town recognizes trees as living beings with rights
Living in Queens NYC I can see the large disparity between the greenery prevalent in the tax photos present on 1940s.nyc. After my grandparents passed we sold the house that had three nice shade trees, patio, a garden, grass along the side and a front lawn. Only the front lawn remains. The rest was entombed in concrete. Houses around the area suffer the same fate - yards completely devoid of green life and instead concrete. When it rains water pours down driveways into the gutter leaving the combined sewer system to deal with water that should be in the earth.
MisterTea··on Raspberry Pi Pico W as USB Wi-Fi Adapter
I had the same idea for a Plan 9 USB WiFi using an ESP32. You serve the wifi device as a ether(3) device which negates the need for janky side band config as the config is done over the same 9P interface. Never got around to it.
MisterTea··on Slate EV truck starts at $24,950
My favorite part about this vehicle is no stupid center console touch screen. Hopefully aftermarket dash kits for a DIN radio become available and we can put proper audio and control back into our vehicles and remove the tyrannical center console screens.
MisterTea··on Show HN: An ASCII 3D Rendering Engine
Nice to see that it renders in pure 7 bit ASCII without using any code page 437 or Unicode characters.
MisterTea··on Europeans should learn to love the air-conditioner
I was in Spain last summer, in August of all times, ~30-40 C. Two of the three places I stayed at had no AC but had ceiling fans. Hot as hell for sure but that is why the siesta exists. I would go out, become exhausted from the damn heat, then go back to my room around 5PM, shower and sleep naked or only in underwear with a window open and ceiling fan running. Then awaken and go back out around 7PM. At someones house I slept in their basement which was a bit damp but cool enough to be somewhat comfortable. The last place I stayed at had AC thankfully.

MisterTea··on A deadly fungus that can infect cats and people is spreading
> “I’m convinced that half of the human cases that come from cats are people who are trying to stuff pills down their cat’s throats to treat the sporotrichosis,”

Do yourself a favor, crush the pill and put it in food. Problem solved. Difficult with multiple cats but I had two and one needed medication so I put this little guys on a window sill he loved to perch on which the other cat didn't care to reach.

MisterTea··on Rent collections are down in New York
>Small landlords (yes, even those with 6 buildings) are almost never min/maxing rent like this. They are optimizing for other things like time investment and hassle factor. And even doing the right thing.

Yup. Have a single residential in a otherwise commercial building in NYC. They pay ~50% market for a spacious 3 BR for a number of reasons; mainly because we have known them for a long time and they struggle with health issues so we never really raised them. Charging them market would put them on the street. They can afford the 50%, live nicely, and the commercial tenants pay market which pays for the building with a little leftover. If they ever move we will certainly charge more but I see no reason to gouge like others.

MisterTea··on Writing Postcards with a 3D Printer
Growing up my father had a Calcomp plotter for CAD drawings. I think it could handle 36 inch wide paper and had a 6 or 8 pen carousel. The neat part was it had a little air table strip that kept the paper hovering at the edges allowing the page to be rapidly fed back and forth without dragging on the plotter bed. That table had a blower that produced a hum that for a while was a staple background sound to the home computer/drafting/office my father setup.
MisterTea··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
> He gave an interview on how he'd ignore people carrying a kilo gram of weed when he was a cop because he doesn't agree with the "war on drugs".

This is about as far from "over the line" as I can imagine.

MisterTea··on The Harajuku Moment (2024)
I see this a lot of these meandering essays or whatever from thought leader types: write a lot of fluff about a subject and make it sound like you're the first person to have a thought on said subject.
MisterTea··on Smashed Toilet Phone Web Server
Toilet rice builds character.
MisterTea··on I almost got hit by a car
Growing up in NYC you were taught to stop and look both ways no matter what. It's not always a car going the wrong way. It could be a cyclist, skate boarder, roller blader, or some idiot on a moped or other wheeled motorized thing.
MisterTea··on What was nice about the UI of Windows 2000
This is why I run XFCE with the Chicago95 theme. Sure, it's Windows 95 but the 2000 UI wasn't a big divergence from memory. It's familiar and gets out of the way. https://github.com/grassmunk/Chicago95
MisterTea··on The Alaska Server
Any significance to this brand or just showcasing a little known white-box reseller of the past?
MisterTea··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
This is exactly where we are headed: a has-been that sold itself down a river to a bunch of kleptocrats who only are about themselves and their sycophants.
MisterTea··on Can I vibecode this or do I have to pay?
Either way you are paying for the code so I don't understand what the point of this is.
MisterTea··on U.S. science is in chaos
> Conservatives have been basically purged from academia over the last 30 years,

Any citations on this?

Unfortunately, this is one of those scroll-jacking sites so all the images are piled up along with the text making this link almost useless.
MisterTea··on Want your images back? That'll be $5
I did the same thing. I contacted support via email who told me to go through the deletion process and near the end, there would be an option to save your photos free of charge. I downloaded my photos, looked through them, then deleted the account.
MisterTea··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
A friend was looking for a new electric razor and sent a link of one that advertised having AI. Phillips Norelco i9000 with AI integration.

Feels like the old iThing or eWare trends of the 00s. New thing, new marketing trend.

MisterTea··on Stolen French fries are spicier than justice: How covert larceny enhances taste
> Human folklore claims that “stolen food tastes better,” yet its effects on taste have not been quantified.

Back in grade school I distinctly remember the time my friend stole half a dozen rice crispies treats then exclaiming "Damn! Food tastes so much better when its stolen." I stole from that store once too but did not enjoy the treat any more than paying for it and felt only remorse. I never knew it was so widespread of a belief until now.

MisterTea··on TIL: You can make HTTP requests without curl using Bash /dev/TCP
TIL: bash and other shells try to copy Plan 9's /net directory and the kernel ip(3) file server. Too bad it's not a real file system. And a missed opportunity to call the root of the path /net.

Your link did not trouble me, your language did. At the time reading, most of the comments here were nuked and grey so I went strait to the pictures and ignored the article text.

MisterTea··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
Fabrice Bellard is the kind of programmer I admire, respect and aspire to emulate. Extremely humble, yet incredibly talented with a massive corpus of work. Bravo Fabrice!
MisterTea··on US battery manufacturing output continues to break records
They also accept higher environmental impacts such as anthropogenic lakes of battery waste.
MisterTea··on Making glass-to-metal seals for homemade vacuum tubes
It will not hold a vacuum. Gas can diffuse through rubber and rubber itself will out-gas in very low vacuums. Metal and glass seals are the only truly air tight sealing methods. Even then, remaining gas is trapped in tubes and a getter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getter is activated at factory to trap this remaining gas on the tube wall in a thin layer of metal. That is why many tubes have a dark silver coating at the top or a band, that's the evaporated getter metal.

See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materials_for_use_in_vacuum

Also, don't use V grooves for O-rings. Read the Parker o-ring handbook for proper seal design: https://test.parker.com/content/dam/Parker-com/Literature/O-...

MisterTea··on Over half of parents of 18-25 year-olds track adult children w smartphone apps
> I can and have used it to see where they are and if they are on their way home for dinner. Am I "tracking them" in some kind of dystopian manner?

Yes. Did they ask you to spy on their location?

> Many apps track the owner will little to no benefit to the user. Is that somehow ok when it is creepy for a parent to do?

It's not okay. This type of tracking isn't demanded or desired by the end user as it's silently forced upon them. Some people don't care but some people do and avoid using apps that track or install privacy preserving software.

MisterTea··on I wrote 5000 lines of assembly because I was angry
Ironic that your asm game engine runs at 60fps while your blog has a loading bar and lags when scrolling. I didn't bother reading it.
