Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on What Sun got wrong
It was all aimed at data shuffling. Think disk<->network stuff that's all byte and integer based work. Four threads per core to wait on spinning rust that was prevalent in it's day. Certainly terrible for general purpose compute and work loads.
MisterTea··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
> So the administration does not intentionally target civilians, they have just stopped caring.

FTFY. IMO I don't think they directly stopped caring about bombing civilians but have stopped caring about doing their jobs. And this staggering tragedy is the outcome.

I think with the atmosphere this current administration has created, questioning things is likely frowned upon. Better to just follow orders and if shit hits the fan, put on a circus act and move on to the next tragic disaster in the making. Someone else can always take the blame.

MisterTea··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
I assume people must vary in how strong an addiction can be as I have smoked cigarettes but have not become addicted to them. I am able to abruptly stop, get mild cravings and be able to ignore them for a few days and the cravings completely subside. I have another friend who did similar. A regular smoker for years who switched between a few alternatives such as pipe, then vape, then just stopped completely and doesn't miss it. Another friend is still smoking into his 40's and is having a hard time stopping. He cut back but still smokes daily.

MisterTea··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
That could trigger another space race. Though I am not betting money on that one.
MisterTea··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Big Bread vs Big Cow. Both are needed for pizza so maybe we can swap the pyramid for a rectangular "office tower" shape and call it a truce. Good opportunity for Big Pizza.
MisterTea··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
This sounds exactly like the "Mediterranean diet" my doctor recommended to me a long time ago.
MisterTea··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> and rather weird for a community that is so proud in it's objective and rational approach to things that put it into its very name.

The people who form fan clubs and cliques are in it for ego stroking/wealth/power with "rational" being tossed in the boot.

MisterTea··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
It's an ad ridden sewer. The final straw was disabling comment visibility to only those who are logged in. I used that site a bunch for Kenshi and the comments were a trove of information. No more. I refuse to make an account on that visual nightmare.
MisterTea··on Grand MS-DOS Gaming General MIDI Showdown
All I know is I went from a Sound Blaster 16 Pro to an AWE 64 gold, the MIDI quality blew my mind. I believe this is the result of using instrument samples to render the audio instead of pure synthesis.

I also remember that the SB and other audio cards added MIDI lines into the DA-15 joystick port that for some reason resided on sound cards. This let people hook up real synths to render the music and I knew of one musician who did this with a keyboard though I never got to hear it live.

> I don't see how it's worth having any emotions or opinions about it. Seems like you are wasting your energy.

Some people only care about the easiest path to their pay check. Some people actually care about software engineering. I tend to prefer the latter but hamstrung by the former.

MisterTea··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
They're good for small/independent businesses who need to store a few things instead of renting a full space or have no spare storage at home.
MisterTea··on Taco Bell Programming (2010)
This is how the Plan 9 fork 9front does a lot of its major plumbing, rc scripts. Many tools are just scripts that use rc, awk, sed, bc and other common tools originating on Unix. e.g. the ipconfig tool is an rc script. This creates a zero dependency environment as well as shakes out bugs and shortcomings in foundational software which need improvement.
MisterTea··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
The 'at' in the middle tells me no. I also get Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law vibes but that could just be me.
MisterTea··on Intelligence per Watt: Measuring Intelligence Efficiency of Local AI
> I wonder why we haven't seen deployment of organic Rankin cycle generators in AI data centers

Because there was never a long term plan for AI data centers. It's an AI market capture and cash grab scheme that ends when local models eat their lunch.

A mindless thought I had regarding the "AI apocalypse" goes something like this: Remember the whole 2012 apocalypse? Mayan calendar, Novelty Theory and all that? Well ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_artificial_intelli...

2012: "AlexNet, a deep learning model developed by Alex Krizhevsky, wins the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge with half as many errors as the second-place winner. This is a turning point in the history of AI; over the next few years, dozens of other approaches to image recognition were abandoned in favor of deep learning."

Alexnet won in September 2012. That's right there with the Mayan ending of November 2012 and the Timewave Zero prediction of infinite novelty happening in December 2012. All pseudo scientific nonsense but entertaining none the less. Good luck to us all while we pass through the great filter.

MisterTea··on LG says we're fake news [video]
Who's selling dumb TV's again, Samsung? Who else? I'll happily pay a thousand bucks to not get screwed by my TV.
MisterTea··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
The thing which depresses me the most is all these so-called smart TV's are giant Arm computers that run malicious software. Imagine if we could re-flash your TV with Linux or whatever.
MisterTea··on We must pace the frontier
I feel like all the closed model providers are milking it as they likely know open models on local hardware will one day eat their lunch. We all know it's not a matter of if but when. The company goes bankrupt, the hardware and property sold off, banks holding the bag.
MisterTea··on A Mathematical Framework for Transformer Circuits (2021)

MisterTea··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Presently Xi is focused on growing China and doing a great job of it. But what happens when Xi is gone? Once China reaches its goal and is the worlds manufacturing source, how will it use its influence to obtain resources?

We already see China deploying debt traps and surveillance technology to developing nations. They are building surveillance states which feed back into China. With that, I feel that we have yet to see how China is going to exert its power.

MisterTea··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I am talking about frivolous use of zip ties and over-application. Things like zip tying an extension cord for storage. And over application as in every 2-4 inches on cable bundles. Madness.
MisterTea··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex?

MisterTea··on Anthropic Just Threatened to Kill Billions of People. This Is Not Okay
I heard a story recently from a friend who mingles with a lot of tech and finance people. One conversation happened after a meeting between a group which deeply bothers him to this day. The conversation basically went like this: "How will all the humans rendered obsolete by AI die?" Answers ranged form "Maybe they will die in riots" or die of starvation from food shortages, or hey, gunned down by AI drones.

I asked him "Are you sure it wasn't dark humor" - "NO! They were dead serious."

There's a cult around AI, not the users, but people with wealth and power who would be more than happy if there were less people. A lot less people.

MisterTea··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Ah, they were proprietary then. I thought they were an early standard that lacked a 5th pin.
MisterTea··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
There was also the Micro-A which I found on some dev boards. I think the Arduino Due (Arm Cortex M3 chip) used one for the USB host port as well as an Atmel Arm uc board.

Also that weird, really small USB connector that was found on some early digital cameras. I think Kodak was a big user of it. Sorta looked like a narrower and taller version of the Mini-B. Maybe the Mini-AB but that doesn't look like it. I have one in my box at home.
