Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

They honestly believe Trump is telling the truth, is doing the right thing by America, trying to help them. IMO, the problem is a lot of these people are well intended, and in many ways good people, but they lack critical thinking (I'm being nice here.) I certainly think they can be changed but it takes a very careful, gentile approach. No one likes being told they're wrong -- you have to let them come to that conclusion, not beat them over the head with it.

I despise this current administration. Yet, when I talk to people, I treat them with the same respect as I would my own parents -- don't matter who they are. I have had fun conversations with near toothless factory workers, literal walking stereotype caricatures of MAGA guys, who really aren't bad. They're just trying to live life and keep their lives together yet here's the world, changing all around them. Then this big mouth assures them it will be all right if you vote for him. They get worked up about things like DEI, LGBTQ, foreigners, etc. Sure it sounds stupid but it is what it is, you deal with it using tact. And here I am, born and raised NYC who was a minority at my public high school (may time the only white kid in class), dated the rainbow, and have a lot of experience with a lot of culture. I usually have a hard rock/heavy metal look so I fit in and they feel comfortable. I just tell them fun or funny stories about cultures and all variety of people I knew. These stories help to clear up misconceptions. Like literally the dentally challenged MAGA fellow I mentioned before told me on my way out that he enjoyed my stories and that he learned something new about people. That's the magic -- story telling and gentile nudging of opinions. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I'm actually hopeful in my own way, but the current political environment is being shaped by adult aged children on both sides and it just gets worse. Though they always say, it gets worse before it gets better. Keep nudging that knowledge.

MisterTea··on Stop Making TUIs
Look at Plan 9's devdraw. https://man.9front.org/3/draw

devdraw can be thought of as a 2D rendering engine. You load assets like text, bitmaps and so on then issue draw commands to render them. There is no SSH. Instead you connect to a remote machine and export resources served by your local machine including your keyboard, mouse and display, each of which is a network transparent microservice. The window manager, Rio (and others), multiplexes access to these microservices. You can run a graphical program without a window manager, e.g. you can boot right into Doom or the Acme editor. It's seamless and can run over any pipe that can push 9P including ssh. If you look at the Sam and Acme text editors you will find they are true modern TUI programs.

Shame we had a cloud ready OS for 35+ years and no one noticed. Instead were living in the 60's with GPU accelerated typewriter emulators.

MisterTea··on Stop Making TUIs
> Hard disagree. Make more TUIs!

My big beef is the dichotomy of today's GPU accelerated bit-mapped displays which are burdened with this silly task of running a program that emulates a typewriter. Why TF do we not have a display protocol that can do graphics natively over SSH in 2026?

> TUIs have downsides like accessibility, poor mouse support, but work really well if you focus on keyboard input.

This assumes a typewriter emulator. Why are we not working on graphical systems where text is a first class primitive allowing us to easily draw text in any color, font, size, formatting and orientation as we please, onto a GPU accelerated display? Keyboard can still reign supreme. No mouse needed but if it is - first class support unlike crappy typewriter emulators.

I get that you are trying to state facts but to the average person they are all Democrats so it don't matter.

They won't. I have industrial clients who are financially eating shit from all this and they have posters of Trump hanging on their office wall while extolling his antics. The workers think the same way. We're boned unless these morons wake up (they won't.)

As someone who grew up in a machine shop, still in manufacturing, and have my own hobby shop, its gross how much raw materials cost. I can get finished parts shipped from China cheaper then I can buy the raw material here in the US. I almost wept looking at over $500 for a simple 2x4 foot sheet of 1/2 inch thick 6061 aluminum.

Inconel is through the roof and I know a few aerospace clients who are MONTHS behind due to shortages and bonkers material costs. Like holding up the military supply chain which is ludicrous. This admin is brain dead.

MisterTea··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
IMO web browser have been enabling all sorts of obnoxious behavior since before JS. One of my all time favorites were the sites that opened pop-ups in a loop faster than you could close them while an audio clip of a guy yelling "Hey everyone! I'm looking at gay porn!" You had to hit reset. Fuck the Web.

> If you have written code a lot in C/C++ and have battle scars with security and null pointer handling, then Rust is definitely a breath of fresh air.

Whats new is old. Ada was that breath of fresh air for me. Safety through a type system with built in concurrency since 1983. Spark gives you provable safe code.

> It’s like driving stick your whole life in heavy traffic, and someone just handed you an automatic :)

Eh, depends on the vehicle (weight, gearing, tires). My 2006 Civic was a dog in traffic but my 2002 Pathfinder was a breeze.

It certainly is synergistic though I also think it has to do with being at the right place at the right time. New technology, new industry, new ideas - pure excitement for all involved.

I feel as the industry ages out the "fresh new excitement cutting edge" environment you thrived in is now mainstream. It's procedural and boring so you feel forced to churn out another "cutting edge" mainstream thing. You burn out trying to blend in with the furniture.

Perhaps if you keep finding new cutting edge things to do you can stay on top but most people are ensnared by their zeitgeist.

> I write all my code in Rust because I am a Rustacean.

Why is Rust the only language to have literal acolytes? It's as if people believe they are part of some collective computer religion ushering in the messiah. Weird, man.

MisterTea··on Olo (Color)
The fun part is the big red dot on the green background animation. Even before clicking it, as my eyes dart across it, small dark blue/black electric arc like shapes manifest all around the edges of the circle either reaching to the edge of the square or curving back to the circle like solar flares. I am red-green colorblind too.
MisterTea··on My Ten Years in No Man's Sky
My friend does have some mental issues. Some of these tedious games really suck them in and it becomes personal when things go wrong and it can trigger an episode. For my friend he almost smashed his PC but instead left the house, went to a bar where he got drunk then met a dude who had some rock and made poor choices. Edit: I should add he looks back at that moment humorously but yeah, NMS drove him to smoke crack.

Thank you. Amusingly the Bafang kit is unable to be shipped to NY or so Amazon says. I'll have to do a bit of research but this is a good starting point.

At least it didn't drive you to smoke crack like it did to of my friends. Though ironically he still plays to this day though a lot less than he used to.

Are there any mechanically coupled solutions that can be field installed by the owner?
MisterTea··on Why are there so many new terminal multiplexers?
For doing Unix terminal things before bit mapped displays became ubiquitous, sure. But in all honesty once you start GPU accelerating and implementing graphics with sixel or some other image over typewriter contraption you're off in the weeds IMO. sixel might be cute, but it was a solution from a time long ago when terminals were still a thing.

We have GPU accelerated bit-mapped displays with 3D rendering, general compute capability and gigabytes of RAM. Create a GPU accelerated canvas in a buffer, load assets like text and bitmapsinto memory and issue rendering commands like a graphics engine. This way you can render text at a 35 degree angle on top of other text on a bitmap on a freakin rotating cube. Draw whatever you want instead of trying to GPU turbocharge a typewriter cosplaying as a dot matrix printer. To me that's backwards thinking.

You can still build an all text TUI but with better text control and graphics. This can work over a 2-way pipe like TCP, websocket or whatever using RPC's.

MisterTea··on Is Netflix Washed Now?
I gave up on streaming few years ago. I had both Netflix and Hulu which were fun for a few years but it gradually felt like it got worse. It got to the point where I would catch myself scrolling past one uninteresting show after another for 10-15 minutes then turned the TV off and did something else.

I've considered getting Paramount just for Trek and South Park but at this point I could care less about TV And film.

IMO the last real war the US participated in and helped to win was WW2 giving it a massive ego. And even then it was drawn in via Pearl Harbor. After that it was a bunch of "wars" it fabricated to satisfy its ego with various (often poor) outcomes.

From the wiki:

> 9P is perhaps not as robust or as fault tolerant as NFS

How is it not robust? What metric did they use? Fault tolerance is not explained here so I don't know what they mean by this. You can use aan(8) on 9front which runs on each side of the connection and holds it open if the network breaks, then resume on reconnect.

MisterTea··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
I had a friend who had a similar experience with a dating site scammer. The guy dropped the act and admitted he was operating out of Africa (I forget the country) and was not proud of what he was doing but did so out of desperation. He told my friend of his living situation, rampant poverty of his country and little to no hope of a future. That small conversation stuck with my friend.

Balderday works pretty nice. Or maybe Jupiter though jupiday sounds silly.

Personally, I would prefer a longer day instead. More sleep, more time after work. 30 hours? maybe 36 hours? Though I imagine employers would simply demand we work 20+ hours a day.

MisterTea··on AI Data Centers Are Driving Up Power Bills – This Map Shows Where
Why aren't the data centers footing the bill? If they want to suddenly spawn GW of load out of thin air then they can pay for the needed infrastructure without pushing that burden to other customers. Power companies have demand metering which offsets the cost of ensuring there is capacity available for commercial and industrial customer loads. Something similar should be levied against large single point of use customers like this.

Depends. NYC busses used to be a mix of municipal and privatized companies that were part of the Transit Alliance. In addition to city owned and operated buses you had four private companies: Green Bus Lines, Jamaica Buses, Triborough Transit and Command. Around the mid 00s they were all absorbed into the MTA. Living in south Queens the Green Bus Lines were a big part of my youth as I took the Q41 to school every day and the Q11 on weekends to the mall.
