Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on 9000 RPM is faster than your screen refreshes
High speed turbo machinery is certainly an odd area -- like you said, its on the verge of ripping itself apart. The Leybold turbo molecular vacuum pump on my bench at home is rated to spin at 60,000 RPM. In the old days of metal fabrication you'd have two specialty precision machines to locate, drill and bore holes -- the jig bore and jig grinder. Once you bored a hole, if the part was heat treated there was almost certainly a need to touch up the bore from slight deformation so a jig grinder, a jig bore base with a 100,000+ RPM pneumatic grinder, is used to perform the final precision machining.
MisterTea··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
> You can't have a factory without motors, ...

This might hold true if the nation building the robots did not have a well established manufacturing base. However, I can see this working in China who has a strong manufacturing base where they can rapidly source all of theses components. It would make for a great experiment but you need working robots first. And that is where I think this idea falls short -- there are no capable robots to accomplish this self-replicating task.

MisterTea··on Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America'
You would think the "logical" thing to do in this case would be to rename it to Lake New York. Of course the joke that is our current president has some sort of dislike from the very state which spawned it.
MisterTea··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
> They have caused me numerous spills and scraped knees (due to the rear wheel locking up and skidding out from under me) and have done the same to my kids.

Skill issue ;-) My first bike I learned to ride on was a BMX with coaster brakes that was part of the fun! Rip down the street then slam the pedal back to leave skid marks. And who didn't love slowing down a bit, then slamming the coaster brake while turning the handle bars to do a sick rear sideways skid. My next bike was also a BMX with a rotor and front/rear pegs. That lead to way more spills trying to do stunts on the pegs or spin the handle bars. Never got good at the stunts part.

Might have worked better for a smaller, lighter me but I would like to give coaster brakes a go again on a proper sized BMX.

> is support being dropped because the previous filesystem had strong encryption?

This statement seems to imply that APFS encryption is less secure than HFS+ encryption and no further evidence is given.

Fun map. First local landmark I look up is Niers Tavern in Woodhaven, NYC. Famous for the scene in Goodfellas after the heist and a scene in Tower Heist which I have not seen. Good wings, burgers and chicken sandwich.
MisterTea··on ReactOS 0.4.16
This is exactly what I do currently but it's flaky. Bekhoff installs a runtime on the development PC that works its way deep into the system that can and does crash the VM. Some USB devices work, some don't, some are buggy and may hang or fail in the middle of programming. I have to keep a dedicated Win PC just to make sure I have a working Winstall for my work. I keep VM's of 2k, XP, and 7 as I have to maintain a wide variety of hardware and software. I just want off the Windows upgrade treadmill.

> We need new Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt anti-trust breakups to make capitalism work again.

Too bad the oligarchs slowly whittled away the government immune system until it was weak enough to infect last election cycle and is busy destroying what little is left. America seems to be headed into a feudal dark age. Once the government is toothless only the people can fix it with mass protest and/or violence.

MisterTea··on Mental Health Workers Say Algorithmic Triage Is Hurting Patients
Yup. With ADHD you constantly feel behind the 8-ball, forever in a deficit of agency. Worse when it's paired with anxiety so you never feel you are in control or make the right decision. Most of your time is spent worrying about what you didn't do and what you might have missed. Some things have higher priority to worry about so "small" things like calling that ADHD doctor fall by the wayside. Inevitably the chaos catches up where you forget an important event, forget to pay a bill, etc, and you're in panic emergency mode trying to fix it. So of course you forget to call that ADHD specialist. All day every day is like this.
MisterTea··on ReactOS 0.4.16
I do a lot of industrial automation and it is the one thing that keeps me boat-anchored to Windows. Every little programmable doodad like signal conditioners and temperature transmitters have their own USB programming cables and their own, mostly crappy windows config software. PLC software is another abomination, hopelessly Windows anchored, bloated GUI monsters, some built on top of Visual Studio (Beckhoff TwinCAT.)

I have donated to ReactOS in the past in the hopes of one day freeing myself from this hell.

MisterTea··on ReactOS 0.4.16
Now all we need is an alternative clean-room implementation of Mac OS.

Garlic dumping. Those little socks of 4 or 5 bulbs sold for a dollar-something are from China (notice the tops are chopped off so they cant sprout.) I buy domestic garlic because it's fucking stupid to import something that's so easy to grow.

YES! That was it!
MisterTea··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Coming from NYC and being used to swiping once to pay a flat fair, my first Suica lesson was they vary the fair by the distance traveled. This means you have to tap in AND out of buses and subways. It was a bit embarrassing and frustrating when I almost could not board a bus in Sapporo with my friends after they all tapped in and my card was rejected. WTF? Thankfully the bus driver showed me a sign in English telling me I forgot to tap out of a station or bus. Oh. He let me board the bus with my friends. Found a train station and the woman at the counter began holding up a series of English signs so we could figure out where I forgot to tap out to ensure the correct charge is applied then sent me on my way. Turns out I goofed up transferring between the Tokyo subway and Shinkansen where I didn't tap out of the subway, got stuck, and a frustrated transit worker just opened the gate to let my dumb tourist ass through meaning I didn't tap out of the subway.

I was floored when I found out you could pay for stuff with my "Japanese MetroCard." It's quite a wonderful system.

MisterTea··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Bathrooms aren't always closed because of vandalizing. NYC public schools lacked bathrooms and stall doors -- the various heroin epidemics saw to that. Schools closed boys bathrooms and removed stall doors to discourage drug use.

In 1994 my public HS had ONE boys bathroom with no stall doors across from the lunchroom where a public school guard sat and watched. The girls had one on every floor. Had to take a dump? pray no one was in one of three stalls and put your book bag on your lap. My brother went to Brooklyn Tech and had the same missing stall door issue though had more bathrooms.

MisterTea··on Ask HN: Why do corporate failures always seem to punish the wrong people?
> Why don't people take accountability for their actions?

This is not my experience. People who are in positions of power, e.g. managers, are the kind of people who are incapable of admitting fault. They can't lose face so the shit is rolled downhill. It's narcissism.

MisterTea··on Stop Making TUIs
Plan 9 devdraw which is really nice: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49384210#49404622.

X is well past its sell-by date.

Plan 9 is text first as it was written by Unix programmers who wanted to build an OS and write programs (Rob wanted a better text editor.) It's the OG TUI. Window managers like Rio can run in Rio. You control things by writing textual messages from the command line, scripts, or code, e.g 'echo 100 >/dev/volume' to set audio volume to 100%. Someone wrote a new WM called Lola so I ran Lola in Rio in Lola in Rio because I can. Sam is very much a keyboard driven modern TUI ed (the standard editor). Acme is a mouse driven TUI editor. Both can be automated by programs and scripts. You can edit text while reading your email and chatting on irc from within Acme.

BUT Lots of stuff missing. We don't yet have GPU accel. It's a MSSIVE undertaking. And it has to be carefully designed and would likely be a built around a generalized devcompute kernel device.
