MisterBastahrd··on Debt-related driver’s license suspensions in Ohio
Nothing says "have money to pay child support" like "don't have money to pay child support because you got fired from your job and have fines for having a suspended license because you were behind on child support."

Sorry, but this is insanely counterproductive.

MisterBastahrd··on Friends don't let friends export to CSV
Trying to do business without using CSV is like trying to weld without using a torch. Might be possible but you aren't likely to have success at it.
MisterBastahrd··on Exosuit muscle control steps closer to reality
I'm just thinking of office workers with carpal tunnel just slapping a third arm onto their shoulder and using that to do work while their bodies heal.

"Anybody using the spare arm today, guys?"

MisterBastahrd··on My grandfather Paul Tillich, the unbelieving theologian
> If God didn't exist, the ones who truly don't believe would likely act out much more on their beliefs no?

But I do. My morality doesn't come from an imaginary being. It comes from my relationships with other people. I don't kill people because (a) it would bring me no joy to do so, (b) would bring me no benefit, and (c) we have laws that prevent killing because societies are more stable when they don't engage in random killings. Societies only get to exist if the people in them find a net benefit in staying alive and having others stay alive. It's amazing how many cultures have existed throughout our history as a species and none of them just went crazy because they didn't believe in some land-locked storm god who forgot about his wife.

The idea that people are just going to go apeshit if they truly believed there wasn't a god is right up there in terms of ridiculousness with all the men in the Republican party and pastors who claim steadfast morality but keep getting caught with minors, women who aren't their wives, and gay men. So I feel sorry for you if you are so inherently immoral that you need to be held back by stories of a man in the sky, but some of us don't live our lives in fear of supernatural retaliation.

And if we're being real, the vast majority of the planet don't believe in your god, including people who claim to be Christian. It's just easier to say that you do so that people will leave you alone.

MisterBastahrd··on Cable ISP fined $10k for lying to FCC about where it offers broadband
Spectrum claims that they offer service at my address, but I've had their people out twice and they do not. They offer it to the rest of the neighborhood (which is a standard residential suburb) but never bothered to bring it to my side of the road and have no plans to do so.
MisterBastahrd··on My grandfather Paul Tillich, the unbelieving theologian
Given that the god of the Bible is a literally an amalgamation of various ancient Sumerian gods, I don't believe that this is the win that you think it is.

And however powerful you think he is, he got his ass handed to him by Chemosh, a member of a Moabite pantheon, after the king of the Moabites sacrificed his heir in a burnt offering to his own god.

I didn't make it up. That's in the Bible.

The Christian god is what happens when you take a fictional character and keep on ascribing to him greater and greater powers because it's easier than describing his limitations. Same thing happened with Superman in the 40s and 50s, really.

MisterBastahrd··on The Reddits
I once had a job in Louisiana where they gave me a $12 hourly raise because the guy they were hiring to be my subordinate was going to be making $7 more than I was currently earning.
MisterBastahrd··on How is a company that sells canned water worth $1.4B?
They sell a carbonated version, and a few flavored versions.

I still buy the carbonated (black can) from time to time. I didn't buy it sooner because I was under the assumption that "Liquid Death" would also be caffeinated, and I couldn't imagine an unflavored caffeinated beverage tasting good.

MisterBastahrd··on TV Station Launches Multiple 4K Broadcasts OTA on ATSC 1.0 [video]
The quality of OTA TV is certainly superior to anything you're gonna get over fiber or coax.

If you're in the US and you have an online provider for cable channels, try swapping an NFL game between the online broadcast and the OTA broadcast. There's a night and day difference in terms of picture quality.

You don't have the right to speak from my porch. You don't have the right to speak on my website.

They are not components of the freedom of speech when talking about private property.

MisterBastahrd··on Supreme Court Sets Rules for Blocking Citizens from Officials' Accounts
> It is a curtailment of someone’s freedom of speech.

The right to a venue and the right to speak are two entirely different things.

MisterBastahrd··on House passes bill to force TikTok sale from Chinese owner or ban the app
If China were really THAT involved in the day to day operations at Tiktok, one would expect to see more pro-Russian propaganda with regards to the war. There's little to none that I've seen.

MisterBastahrd··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
I know this isn't the most progressive thing in the world, but uh... what about a law that puts a hard upper cap on the tax rate of any primary residence while also limiting the amount of properties a person or corporate entity can own within an area? Seems to me that it would encourage cash-starved governments to encourage home building while discouraging seldom-used second-homes and single family rental properties.
MisterBastahrd··on Gabriel García Márquez: Sons publish novel that late author wanted destroyed
Life belongs to the living. If he really wanted his last novel destroyed, he should have done it himself while he was still able to do so.
MisterBastahrd··on Linkedin.com Outage
This is really gonna put a damper on my hobby of reading the daily admonitions of wannabe CEOs who haven't held a real job in years but insist that all the best collaboration happens around water coolers in offices.

Anyone ever considered building a network attached water cooler with mic and speakers for remote workers?

MisterBastahrd··on Screen time robs average toddler of hearing 1,000 words spoken by adult a day
I think part of it is that the generation who was never allowed to be bored is now raising kids, and so they believe that a perpetual state of being stimulated is the norm. And because kids in general are pretty boring little creatures, it only makes sense to distract them with screens of their own so you can go back to looking at yours.
MisterBastahrd··on Yuzu emulator developers settle Nintendo lawsuit, pay $2.4M in damages
You can tell that this was about protecting their hardware sales more than any claims about fair use or copyright or other IP because there are literally hundreds of companies which actively sell handheld systems with thousands of Nintendo brand or licensed ROMs on Amazon and elsewhere and I haven't seen a single one shut down.
MisterBastahrd··on Children need risk, fear, and excitement in play
What's nonsensical is believing that busybodies are new or worth anyone's time. We all knew who they were growing up. Not only would we identify them, but we would tell kids we barely knew to watch out for them.

Thousands of years ago, people CERTAINLY had to the time to sit around and evaluate other people. You think everyone was running around in a field with a spear? They'd plant crops, do chores, and then sit around and do fuck-all, especially when it got hot in the afternoon hours.

Stop defending childish, modern idiocy. The times haven't changed at all. The people have changed. They've become cowards.

MisterBastahrd··on Children need risk, fear, and excitement in play
Other adults have seen five year olds out on their own for literally thousands of years across many cultures. For all the talk about the man in the white van with the candy, it's always just been talk. If you'd even attempt to argue that it's more dangerous today, then I'd counter it by saying that it must be something occurring in the same generation as the parents who fear for their children, and maybe they need to do some additional introspection.

That they aren't worried about the child is just an irrational statement. If there was nothing to worry about, then there's no reason to keep the kid cooped up out of public sight.

Hysterical scaremongering which masquerades as lucid, rational thought doesn't go very far here.
MisterBastahrd··on Neurosurgeon pioneers Alzheimer's, addiction treatments using ultrasound [video]
Your argument is akin to being against needles because the government might use them to perform lethal injections.

I don't know if you've ever known any addicts, but they aren't exactly happy about being addicted. Give them a treatment that works and is affordable and most of them will be just happy to get some targeted head buzzing to treat their symptoms.

Have you ever considered that nothing is wrong with you because nothing is wrong with you, and not that nothing is wrong with you because you are some stoic or heroic figure who managed to simply resist temptation?

I've been drunk plenty of times. I've also not consumed enough alcohol to be in a drunken state in almost 8 years despite having a collection of bourbon worth thousands. A good friend of mine, who drank no more than I did for a long while, could not stop. He kept going until he wrecked his liver and died from organ failure.

I didn't have the strength to overcome alcoholism. I was simply never an alcoholic. He was.

MisterBastahrd··on Children need risk, fear, and excitement in play
I was 5 when I was traveling across my neighborhood on my bike to go visit my friends. I'd tell my parent where I was heading and then I'd go. I was 6 when I received my first Victorinox swiss army knife and learned how to sharpen it to a razor's edge. I was 7 when I started going to a local swim club by myself, saving up a week's allowance for a day at the pool and some candy. I was 8 when my very best friend moved away. I got in fights with multiple friends' older brothers for teasing me about it and gave almost as good as I got given my age disadvantage. I was 9 when I was travelling to the end of the neighborhood, parking my bike by a friends' house, then hiking a quarter mile to go fishing in a river pond.

Parents these days aren't rational at all. They worry about protecting the physical nature of the child and leave their development and ability to accurately assess risk on their own as an afterthought. That's how you perpetuate failure: with children who grow up while never possessing the life experience necessary to properly raise kids of their own. The world simply isn't that fucking scary.

MisterBastahrd··on Children need risk, fear, and excitement in play
Well, I'm glad I didn't read it, because a child should have both unstructured play, fully free of adult supervision AND structured play to learn the ins and outs of working in structured rule-based groups while pursuing something they enjoy.
MisterBastahrd··on Children need risk, fear, and excitement in play
Depends on what you mean.

If you are within earshot of your children, you are not "letting them play by themselves." You are supervising their play from a distance. They are not the same. Know why bullies have it so easy nowadays? Because once upon a time, a bully was usually a kid who came from an abusive household and they were just demonstrating what they learned at home. Eventually, they'd end up getting their asses kicked by a kid who had the means and background to defend himself, and they'd learn something from it.

Today, the world is full of little Eric Cartman wannabes: little asshole kids whose parents hover around them and will defend them to the ends of the Earth. It's screwed up child socialization and it's ruined childhood education because teachers with three degrees would rather do anything than take abuse from those bad kids and their pathetic, enabling parents.

MisterBastahrd··on Majority of workers at Mercedes plant in Alabama sign UAW authorization cards
Are you unaware that people who "work their butt off" usually end up being promoted to non-union positions? My dad was union until he was promoted to manager. Then he stopped being union. So was my uncle. So was my brother in law. It happens all the time. And the best part is that the management position they get usually ends up being directly influenced by the union wages and benefits, because why would you just take on extra responsibility for no extra pay?
