MildlySerious··on Experimenting with olivine crystals in the ocean to increase CO2 absorption
Halving the emissions of the wealthiest 1% would have the same effect as eliminating the emissions from the poorest 50% of the population[1].

It's not a population problem. It's a consumption problem. The number of people consuming is only one variable of the equation, and it is neither the easiest, fastest, most attainable nor the most ethical one to adjust.

There are a lot of low hanging fruit we could tackle with willing policymakers, before depopulation has to be even considered.

MildlySerious··on Show HN: AI Getting Started – A template helps you start a AI SaaS with ease
Is there a reason not to use Supabase Auth if you use Supabase anyway?
MildlySerious··on Show HN: YouTube Full Text Search – Search all of a channel from the commandline
For all I care, they lost that claim with [Deleted video] - and by that I don't mean that they remove videos, for which there are countless valid reasons, but that there is no way to see what it was you liked, and that the lists you curate just deteriorate. There are many other, maybe more valid reasons they fail this mission, but that's the one that has plaguing me the longest.
MildlySerious··on Google I/O and the Coming AI Battles
I believe that would just be fighting losing battles on a front that doesn't matter.

Content mills existed long before AI. Clickbait existed long before AI. Fake news and misinformation existed long before AI.

AI will empower things like that, but it isn't at the core of the problem.

As a user, I care that content is truthful, useful, and/or entertaining. I care that it isn't presented in a misleading way, and I care that it doesn't cause harm (hate, misinformation, etc.) - What I don't care about is who or what created it.

I think a bigger step in the right direction for society would be to empower certain groups like journalists in ways that they don't have to compete with all the crap out there.

MildlySerious··on Inflection AI First Release – Pi
I like that it has a curious and inquisitive tone. It seems limited in its reasoning right now, but it is pleasant to chat with.
MildlySerious··on I cloned myself with AI, and she fooled my bank and my family
I'm not sure why it wouldn't, and having dead content enabled, I've seen some weirdly incendiary responses to pretty harmless comments recently. It's weird.

I wouldn't be surprised if the HN team is already doing a lot of work already. Another factor that may have spared the HN community is that there are lower hanging fruit to pick first, reddit being the prime example.

MildlySerious··on Smartphones with Qualcomm chip secretly send personal data to Qualcomm
I have the /e/OS Fairphone 4 and the battery life is pretty good. To be fair, I've only owned the smaller versions (Galaxy Mini) and non-flagship phones before, so this one is quite a bit bulkier in comparison. With my low usage, over a year after purchase the battery still lasts for multiple days. My previous phones I used to charge every night, anyway.
MildlySerious··on Aspiring partners accuse Apple of copying their ideas
Nothing wrong with Apple building in-house solutions or integrating things into the OS. Problems start when a trillion dollar corporation uses their platform to strong-arm smaller development studios or individuals, shuts down their revenue stream for bullshit, confusing reasons, and steals their efforts instead of paying what is effectively chump-change to them, to reward the people who provided content to their platform.
MildlySerious··on Aspiring partners accuse Apple of copying their ideas
I recall there being a thing about a drum machine app, as well, and iirc F.lux had faced anti competitive behavior as well.
MildlySerious··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
If I just wanted results, I'm sure I could have. I just thought it was interesting to see if this more abstract description would map to results that would be considered impressionism.
MildlySerious··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
> The point is you knew to use "impressionist" as a concept.

I could have surfaced, or learned about it 20 seconds earlier from a different ChatGPT conversation (throwing vaguely related questions at GPT[1]), or something as old fashioned as a search engine. Maybe turning up the "novel" kernels of information that you won't get from LLMs without knowing to ask will be its own thing in the future. A few Pinterests for prompts are already out there if I'm not mistaken.

Great choice of art styles, by the way!

MildlySerious··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
> People with a good understanding of different styles of art and framing/angles/etc should be able to create the "right" prompts for a customer much much faster and get better results than people who don't know art.

When the Bing image creator released a couple of days ago, I used ChatGPT to craft a prompt for it.

> In one sentence describe the art style of impressionism

< The art style of impressionism is characterized by visible brush strokes, emphasis on the changing effects of light, and an emphasis on capturing the fleeting moment.

Then used that in my prompt for the creator:

> okinawa street on a rainy night, visible brush strokes, emphasis on the changing effects of light, and an emphasis on capturing the fleeting moment

The result: https://imgur.com/a/QdT1Gtk

This was the first shot. No prompt engineering, no parameters, nothing.

MildlySerious··on The genie escapes: Stanford copies the ChatGPT AI for less than $600
I wouldn't be surprised if GPT ends up as the the AskJeeves of LLMs.
MildlySerious··on Ask HN: How do you think LLMs will affect society medium/long term?
A few years ago the general opinion was still that artists were going to be safe from being replaced by AI for the longest time compared to other jobs. Today I think it is valid to say that artists were among the first people to get a direct feel for how much an entire occupation can be stirred up by AI.

The time span is just a few short years and our predictions were already off by so much. There is no telling where we will be five years from now, let alone 20 or even further beyond.

That being said, I think you're right in that it is a turning point, and that there is a great deal of changes needed for us to adopt to what's ahead of us. The best way I can describe my take is that we will have a lot of growing up to do as a society. Lots of the systems that our modern world is built on are very fragile. We've rediscovered that during the lockdowns. The biggest ones to worry about being politics and the general political climate, the news cycle and how we deal with information. If we can't figure those out soon we will drown in an ocean of AI content where any semblance of truth is lost.

What I think we need is politicians that aren't stuck in time 30, 40 or 50 years in the past, that understand the world we live in today and can move accordingly. The information age hasn't caught up with the powers that be. At the pace that AI is moving, and the pace that politics is moving, what I think will happen is a trial by fire. Tech will move faster than the world around it can, and we will get burned before things get better. What exactly that will look like, who knows?

MildlySerious··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
To be fair, they have done a good job with that motto for a long time. I've been with them for 10 years and have recommended and praised them for being "no bullshit" on a few occasions, both here on HN and on reddit.

It sucks how quickly these things can change.

MildlySerious··on Elon Musk reportedly had his own tweets prioritized out of jealousy
I hadn't checked his feed in a good while. Scrolling to find the tweet above, and going a little further, it really is just a single stream of memes now. Bad ones, at that. Yet he's somehow shocked enough his views are down to warrant firing the guy who filled him in on it, despite the existence of the public view count that he introduced.
MildlySerious··on Elon Musk reportedly had his own tweets prioritized out of jealousy
He's not exactly being coy about it[1]

MildlySerious··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
The email provider that account was tied to doesn't exist anymore, and the domain is taken. I didn't notice until after it happened, so I am not putting all the blame on reddit. It's more of a string of unlucky circumstances. Who knows if I could have even changed it without access to the email account, anyway.

Fun fact: Reddit for the longest time didn't require an email address to create accounts.

MildlySerious··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
The last time I tried to change the password of a reddit account I lost access to it.

I attempted to change the password, got an error saying something went wrong. I figured I'd try again later. so I also didn't save the newly generated password.

Got logged out, and couldn't log back in with the old password.

And there's no way that I know of to contact anyone at reddit to try and get help.

MildlySerious··on Reddit is letting go of employees in community management and other teams
The article and the quotes in the GP state that they plan to grow their headcount.
MildlySerious··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
VSCode, Minecraft, Teams.

They have renewed their grip on several audiences.

MildlySerious··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
I think this is true for many, but it is not true for all. Some of us would thrive in these new circumstances. I am extremely inflexible when it comes to emotions. There is more to it, but the way I've explained it to others is that my clock for emotions ticks 10 times slower compared to them. That is, if I develop emotions at all. This is something that has affected every aspect of my life for as long as I can remember. There doesn't seem to be a way to "fix" it, but for a long time I've considered "more time" to be the best way to accommodate it and for me to live life at the pace that works for me. Obviously, I won't know until I try, but I would very much appreciate the chance to get a shot at it. And, much like the parent commenter, I am very eager to see more of this world before leaving it. Whatever may or may not come after isn't going anywhere, so might as well take some time.
MildlySerious··on Tesla Market Cap falls below $500B
> Tesla's build quality never seemed to impact stock performance.

Tesla for a long time had a lack of serious competition, and a popular hype man at the helm that kept investor's eyes pointed at the future, by making promises such as "Fully self driving in 12-18 months" for a decade plus.

With the age of pop culture hype taking a turn for Musk and Tesla, competition starting to look quite attractive, and the whole sector becoming more mature, attention is beginning to flow back to boring things like build quality.

MildlySerious··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
To extend on this, I wouldn't use clear text for this. Create a HMAC of the IP and add it somewhere in the page, makes it harder to realize what's happening and for the adversary to work around it.
MildlySerious··on Is Dark Mode Good for Your Eyes? (2020)
Seasonal Affective Disorder, for anyone else wondering. Agree with avoiding "random" acryonyms if possible.
MildlySerious··on Ask HN: Are you less envious of people with strong language skills now?
Even if ChatGPT relieves you of the question how you're going to say something, it still requires you to know what to say, and when.

It can't tell you what you need if you don't know to ask for it.

The how that ChatGPT can address is really the smallest part of my struggles, most of the time.

MildlySerious··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?
The good thing is, there is a bit of a resurgence of the solopreneur spirit.
MildlySerious··on Ask HN: uBlock not blocking ads on Twitter desktop anymore?
I suppose that is an option. Maybe you're in some A/B group where things have been changed up, which can't be reproduced otherwise.
MildlySerious··on Ask HN: uBlock not blocking ads on Twitter desktop anymore?
I do not see any ads on Twitter, using uBlock Origin in FF, and see the ads-api.twitter.com domain in the list of blocked domains, among others.

You can add your own lists and subscribe to other existing lists in the settings of the addon, but my first intuition would be that this isn't what's causing the issue.

MildlySerious··on European countries begin taking down public company registers after ruling
I was referring to my own interests - as the one who would be losing his privacy - not the consequences for society. I made that very clear in the first sentence of my OG comment. There are no advantages to me losing my privacy. That is, me specifically. Not individuals in general. Me. As I was saying from the start.

The discussion you seemingly want to have you can have plenty of times elsewhere in the thread, so why instead ignore everything I said and pivot the conversation to the one thing I said multiple times now wasn't what I was talking about?

It is perfectly valid and I appreciate that you want to talk about the bigger picture of this change, and how it affects different aspects of society. That conversation should go along with conversations about individual experiences and expectations and interests, not happen in their stead.
