MichaelGlass··on AWS Elastic Beanstalk for Docker
Until elastic beanstalk supports time scheduled scaling, I will be sad. Every morning my app servers go from zero to a million miles an hour and it takes about 20 minutes to scale up. Does anyone actually use this at scale?
MichaelGlass··on Show HN: Lapis – A web framework for MoonScript and OpenResty
see https://github.com/leafo/moonscript/issues/35

. is taken. : is taken. propose a better alternate and maybe it'll end up in the language.

Nice work!

This has pretty excellent documentation. Like really excellent documentation. But jumping into the code itself is a little bit of a beast with no tests or comments.

so: is testing on your roadmap?

MichaelGlass··on Show HN: I made a site for hosting/selling indie games
what are tags? Are there plans for in-itch discovery? As a buyer, the front page doesn't really help me at all.

as a seller, I can see the use case. Maybe integration with online arcades? kongregate, for example.

MichaelGlass··on Scribd says: Beat our programmers at a coding challenge
there's a tiresome amount of dick referencing in the programming world.

(fyi, one half of the team who built the game does not possess a dick)

MichaelGlass··on Show HN: We just launched our MVP, a new RSS Reader
Google reader user. Agreed: If someone could restore the features google reader killed, I would start using their product immediately.

Specifically:

sharing, comments, bookmarklet for non-rss content.

Float (float.com) has an interesting idea of removing everything except content from facebook/twitter/etc, which I like, but they are still missing a usable webapp and the aforementioned features.

Scanners are great. Who has a scanner these days? I appreciate that there might be a better solution, but this seems pretty pragmatic. And looking at the results, it also is pretty damn good.
MichaelGlass··on Time to Close the Security Theater
I'm amazed this post was so popular. A populist point "let's shut down the TSA" is supported by a series of really poorly thought out and subjectively supported arguments.

Mind you, I agree that the TSA introduces unprecedented invasions of personal privacy. And I agree that it should be shut down on those grounds. But making the point that TSA kills because it incentivizes driving is silly.

What else is stupid? Privatized Airports. Besides security and fleet maintenance concerns, this sounds like a recipe for monopolistic airport practices, ie, come to Hartsfield Jackson, an airport paid for with tax-payer dollars. I'm not saying that public airports are run like well oiled machines, but I'd rather roll back one stupid administration than throw the baby out with the bathwater.

MichaelGlass··on Nothing is ever as risky as you think it is
Give us some concrete examples of tough decisions with obvious objective upside?

Also: A lot of what makes it hard to be a founder is not the shame of failure, but knowledge of lost time. If my company goes under, I'm not as disappointed in my lack of success as I'm disappointed in time not spent more productively elsewhere. There's a subtle distinction there.

MichaelGlass··on Ask HN: Good app ideas to learn a new platform
either, really. not much of a stateful backend but it's a nice toy in javascript.
MichaelGlass··on Ask HN: Good app ideas to learn a new platform
Conway's Game of Life because it has a simple backend and a simple grid-based GUI
MichaelGlass··on Conway's Game of Life in HTML5 canvas
here's mine:

and here's my coworkers much more fleshed out version:

http://life.michaelgeraci.com

why? nice excuse to learn canvas, coffeescript, tdd in javascript. certainly can do it with divs (in fact mpg did it that way first).

MichaelGlass··on Learning Advanced JavaScript
I learned JavaScript but as soon as I understood the capabilities (but before I mastered usage) I decided to do all of my work in CoffeeScript.

I find it much cleaner / easier to write and I don't really see a downside to using it instead.

MichaelGlass··on Can interview puzzles help find startup ideas?
I guess I'm not impressed by first mover advantage. I like second mover advantage. First mover advantage is subject to too many problems. Confirmation bias. Unseen players which make the better solution infeasible. etc.

In the end, execution is key. I value polish over cleverness. Someone who can execute quickly and cleanly is who I want. Testing for those qualities is more difficult and interactive than simple interview questions.

MichaelGlass··on “Good On Video” Is The New “Good On Paper” With HireHive (YC S10)
I wonder how many of these comments are based on experience hiring. The challenge isn't from the applicant's standpoint but from the other end. Certainly video can be used for discrimination. But that is absolutely not the only use case.
MichaelGlass··on Silver Needle in the Skype
one of the nice things about skype is that it always works. Have a firewall? Skype will find a way through it. If it were completely reverse engineered, it might be easier to filters its traffic. they say they can DOS skype on a network but at what cost?
MichaelGlass··on Silver Needle in the Skype
very interesting but also (very) old news.
MichaelGlass··on Mint.com should be a platform
(To be clear: I work with Jonah, so I share his concerns.) I think jonah skimped on one big point: Mint.com as a service is a security feature.

I want to give some financial information to company X. Right now: The way that I do this is by giving that company ALL OF MY SECRET FINANCIAL INFORMATION. Being able to granularly release only a relevant fraction of my information to a third party is much better.

Sure: Giving secret information away without users' consent (a la google buzz): Bad idea. In this case: That's not the point.

MichaelGlass··on Mint.com should be a platform
Whether or not it's mint or some middleware, the point is: There're lots of interesting thing you can do with pieces of financial data. There are also lots of security implications. Handing the security problems off to one company (say, mint) and still being able to have access to all the metadata (without the ability to, say, leak your customers' account data) would be dandy. From a consumer standpoint: That's much better than giving all of that secret information to every company that's interested in accessing it.
