I am the Technical Co-Founder of a Stealth-Mode Software Startup.

We expect to retain a few consultants towards the end of the year, if things go well we will hire some W-2 employees in Spring of 2016.

If you'd like to work for us, whether as a consultant or employee, please mail your dead-tree cover letter and resume to:

   Michael David Crawford
   650 NW Irving St
   Portland OR 97209-1272
   USA
We're mostly cool with remote work; that is, some of our projects must be done on site but most don't need that.

Consultants may send brochures or other marketing lit rather than their resumes. If you are a consultant, really a trifold brochure is far, far better than a resume and cover letter.

While I cannot guarantee response of any sort, to the very best of my ability I _will_ reply. If I don't think we could possibly extend you an offer, I may be able to suggest someone else who could.

I won't ask you to do any coding outside your interview. I myself regard coding challenges as unpaid labor. My decision to pursue this startup had a lot to do with my decision to boycott coding challenges.

Wish us luck: most new business fail within the first five years.

MichaelCrawford··on Why does Gmail hate my domain?
My own cousin blackholed my gmail because gmail sends so mych spam. I had to ask him to configure an exception just for me.

If you dont want to receive spam use lafn.org. I dont know how one gets an account there but I expect it doesnt cost anything.

If you want a full VPS use http://prgmr.com/ - "we dont assume you are stupid.". Its a hosting service operated by neckbeards for the benefit of their fellow neckbeards.

Quite cheap, I get mine for free because I help them with their marketing.

MichaelCrawford··on The Anti-Mac Interface (1996)
Its not just the addon bar, and its not just firefox. Its a wider problem, not just with open source or free software.

If a business model is predicated on giving free stuff to the public, the staff, directors and investors do not understand that its users or members have a legitimate ownership stake.

That they did not pay for the product or service, that they agreed to the terms of service or copyright license or even copyright assignment is not a consideration. That something is legal doesnt particularly imply that it is ethical.

Or that it makes sense. Look at the smoking radioactive crater that reddit the company made of reddit the website. I dont blame Ellen Pao, the problems arose long before she hired on. I blame the directors, the directors hired Pao to act as a spokeswoman for the ignorant.

MichaelCrawford··on Modelling suicide and unemployment: longitudinal analysis covering 63 countries
While I haven't looked into it I expect that suicides increased during the subprime meltdown, also that many turned to a life of crime with some committing murder.

Yet none of the bankers have gone to prison.

I was once a suicide hotline counselor. People have many reasons to commit suicide. In every case that I know about it is something that can be overcome if one can find a way to survive. A man once jumped off the golden gate bridge. As he fell, he realized that in reality he had no problems. Well, one problem.

He had just jumped.

However he was one of the very few to survive.

MichaelCrawford··on Humans can sense the polarization of light with the naked eye
I have long noticed this effect however I had no clue I was seeing polarization.

I'm into photography. I had a dead-simple Pentax K-1000 SLR. Its only automation is a very basic light meter; I adjust the aperture and exposure until the needle is where I want it to be (ie. sometimes purposely over- or under-exposed).

Three lenses, but with a polarizing filter for each. Mainly I use the polarizers to deepen the blue of the sky.

Giving the Finger to Vasha: Child Pornography on the Internet

A straightford way to find many of those who profit from its distribution would be to use a bot to locate forum threads that go on for hundreds of pages.

I stand corrected.

I expect that I was actually taught what you explained however it has been many years.

MichaelCrawford··on The Mob's IT Department
Bing Image Search.

The ITU's Child Online Protection initiative notifies Google of child pornography links. Google prmptly removes them from its index.

I expect Microsoft is so notified as well but Satya Nadella doesnt remove the links nor cached images, despite the original servers having been dead for years.

I am convinced that kim dotcom's bust gad nothing to do with copyright but that much of the, uh, "digital media" was distributed from his servers; however most is encrypted, but typically with very obvious or easily brute forced passwords.

More or less you start with bing then pay for a premier account with a filesharing service.

There is also "link protection" mostly our of India, which hides the referring page. One can earn decent coin by promoting a popular ptotected link.

Most of those links are found on what should be dead forums but whose servers are still operating.

An easy way to rain on the mob's parade would be to scout around for threads that go on for hundreds of pages.

I know a few things that no one else does, as well as some that others are reluctant to discuss.

A few years ago I dropped a dime to the FBI to request they tap my phone. This led to my iPhone's return less than five minutes after it was stolen.

"Don't lose your iPhone," said the officer, "that's how we're keeping track of you."

I once threatened to murder a Vancouver PD officer when he refused to take my report when I wanted to report a drug informant hit. Hilarity ensued.

For unrelated reasons I am concerned that my days are numbered so tomorrow afternoon Im going to drop by the FBI field station here so I can sing like a bird.

I dont really know but speculate that my uncle died because he decided not to run for office rather than move legislation for Boswell Cotton Corporation. My father's older brother was VP of accounting.

MichaelCrawford··on Stack Overflow isn't supposed to be “nice,” or for “all” programmers
I can't find the link just now so I'll have to ask my colleague.

Some guy ask a question like "I can use 'x + 2' to add two to the value of x. How do I store the result?" I'm pretty sure he really did not know.

Someone replied "Use jQuery. jQuery can do everything."

This initiated the troll of the century, finally someone supplied the correct answer "y = x + 2" with the end of the thread being "you suck".

MichaelCrawford··on How Can There Still Be a Sex Difference, Even When There Is No Sex Difference?
A recent study found that those with blue eyes are predisposed to alcoholism. Doubtlessly that will lead to employment discrimination against those with brown eyes, as management types like to party.

I once read that every human society that had agriculture also had beer. We have had agriculture for roughly 12,000 years.

MichaelCrawford··on Those people who need very little sleep
A whole bunch of them.

I am seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow; I am hoping he will refer me to a neurologist who will order an MRI. I suspect I have a brain tumour however I have had several CT scans that turn up negative. They don't want to give me any more CT scans because of the X-ray dosage but MRIs don't have that problem.

I had surgery for obstructive sleep apnea in 2008; it worked really well. I was lucky, it has a high failure rate. Since then I can comfortably breathe through my nose, before that - for my entire life - I could not.

Turbinate cautery feels just like having a hot soldering iron shoved way up your nose.

I am also mentally ill. Some people think my mental illness is the result of sleep deprivation however there are numerous other contributing factors. When I was diagnosed with Bipolar-Type Schizoaffective Disorder in 1985 the doctors were concerned my symptoms were the result of a brain tumour so they gave me an EEG, CAT scan and neurological tests.

I wanted to be a chemist at first, I was heavily into it. My parents encouraged it as Dad was once a chemist and my mother's father was a surgeon. Unfortunately Mom gave me a bottle of mercury. It is powerfully toxic but only when metabolized in certain ways; the actual liquid is mostly harmless.

But I spilled it on the carpet. I recovered most of it with an eyedropper however I spilled it several times - it's quite cool to hold it in the palm of your hand - so quite a lot of it got in the carpet.

Childhood mercury vapor inhalation poisoning might not kill you but it will screw you up in spectacular ways. Among other things my hairline is visibly receding in photographs starting from when I was fourteen years old. I was completely bald at 21.

There are other traits than IQ which promote the success of the species.

Even if unintelligent, physical strength and endurance enable one to hunt, to flee from predators.

Sharp eyesight and sensitive hearing.

Those of African heritage commonly have Sickle Cell Anemia. While it is a crippling illness it gives one resistance to malaria; in much of Africa that enables one to live longer than those with healthy blood cells.

MichaelCrawford··on Those people who need very little sleep
I need more sleep than anyone I have ever heard of other than sick people - that is I sleep a lot when otherwise healthy - however I sleep very irregularly, commonly staying awake for days at a time then sleeping for several days.

I have always been this way it was a problem in grade school, and is why I am self employed.

In 2010 I determined that I can stay awake for four days before I start to experience subtle visual hallucinations; stay awake any longer and they became quite severe.

I think this may have damaged my brain somehow. At one time when I stayed awake so long I could work productively, no I cannot, however I still have that same sleep cycle.

I once found a "casual encounters" ad on craigslist, in which a woman sought men to attend a certain type of party, which type I do not remember.

I looked it up at Urban Dictionary, the objective of that kind of party is to impregnate as many women as possible.

I contemplated attending but then concluded that I want to know who my children are, and that they would want to know who their father is. Even under the best of circumstances it is painful not to know one's father - look at Steve Jobs.

I was once invited to have unprotected sex with a complete stranger. She was quite lovely, definitely someone I would want to be with but we just happened to stumble across each other at Burning Man. I expected I would never see her again so I declined.

MichaelCrawford··on The troubled POLY instruction of the VAX [pdf]
Two years after I logged a bug in Apple's MPW C compiler, I received a developer CD with release note that explained how to reproduce my bug but then said "don't do that".

Mac C compilers added "pascal" as a reserved word, this enabled one to link to toolbox apis that had the pascal calling convention.

I wrote a c++ test tool for MacTCP in which a member function returned a pointer to a pascal C function, for use as a callback from the network driver.

My first attempt produced faulty machine code. While regressing the bug I found that increasing the lengths of the names of the member function or of its parameters would crash the compiler. Not the resulting binary - the compiler itself.

On the old mac os that took down the entire machine.

MichaelCrawford··on Antibody wipeout relieves symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome
I have a close friend who has chronic fatigue. It is commonly stigmatized as many regard those who are chronically fatigued as lazy, just making excuses.

But my friend is one of the hardest-working, most productive people I have met and is quite wealthy as a result at first of her code, then as a result of her management expertise.

Even so she feels like crap 24/7 and it just won't go away. Nothing helps.

She can be a little hard to get along with, though.

MichaelCrawford··on Is It Time to Start Shutting Down Law Schools?
Yes.

As a result of actual experience with attorneys, I know very well that when I need legal advice, I am far, far better off to just pull it out of my own ass.

Accountants as well.

MichaelCrawford··on Why feminists are so annoying
