MeteorMarc··on Using any C++ library in Godot
So, what profiling support is available to find the critical parts of your GDscript or C# code. Before needlessly jumping into c++ hassle for performance reasons? Tfa addresses functional reasons, which is ok.
MeteorMarc··on New Satellite Engine Could Use Earth's Atmosphere to Stay in Orbit Indefinitely
100km is the height where meteoroids ablate. You must mean 100k miles and even there the largest meteors start to become visible.

Indeed at the bottom tfb quotes heights of 190-250km for model calculations.

MeteorMarc··on Part-human part-mouse brain developed in science breakthrough
No, they are just grumpy.
MeteorMarc··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Later on he cites an Anil Seth paper that makes the same unproven suggestion of substrate dependence of consciousness.
MeteorMarc··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
I assume some of the solutions are stable against small perturbations, while others are not. That would be interesting to see.
MeteorMarc··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker
Could it be the reboot thing is legacy code from Windows 1.0? Wait, then Gates himself was at th wheel.
MeteorMarc··on I asked astra to make playable 4D chess
It feels unnatural that a white bishop can move to black squares.
MeteorMarc··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
See https://www.quantamagazine.org/theory-of-fluids-enters-the-2... if you want to know what the Navier Stokes equations are about.
MeteorMarc··on Timeline of the Far Future
Strange to start with a clause that is irrelevant to the rest of the page.
MeteorMarc··on Harvest (IBM 7950): Supercomputer for cryptanalysis at the NSA in the Cold War
Decrypt later, I suppose.
MeteorMarc··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
In addition, there also is the issue of tick borne encephalitis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick-borne_encephalitis
MeteorMarc··on Greenland issues 'strong warning' as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drill
Does this classify as hybrid warfare?
MeteorMarc··on The Grid That Doubles the Strength of the Ground
The plastic structure could easily give problems at extreme environmental temperatures due to thermal expansion. Saw this recently at a local parking lot, laid by non-professionals.
MeteorMarc··on Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search
Mass surveillance based on social media is prohibited in The Netherlands and presumably other European countries. However, running specific profiles on police owned ANPR camera's could be declared a proportional breach of privacy and thus legal.
MeteorMarc··on Discovery of a multicomponent alloy forged by the Hiroshima atomic blast
This is really worth a read. Although the origin is an airblast, ground structures and soil is evaporated too into an inhomogeneous plasma. The relative fast cooling adds to the crystal formation.
MeteorMarc··on Painting with Gaussians
Intriguing and nice writeup. This however tries to encode all the hidden painter's knowledge. Would it be easier to generate realistic images from paintings and use these pairs to finetune an image generation model?
MeteorMarc··on How Arsonists used cats to spread Italy's wildfires
Already known method from ages ago, see https://www.ft.com/content/7408cc02-7004-11e9-bf5c-6eeb83756...
MeteorMarc··on LLM Usage in Debian: Three Proposals
Wait, can we have a vote to not link HN contributions to dynamic pages!
MeteorMarc··on Hybrid-Electric Aicraft Engine Targeting 30% Fuel Efficiency
Nothing on recharging the battery in the landing phase, so room for improvement.
MeteorMarc··on JEP 540: Simple JSON API (Now in Incubator)
Many languages have json marshalling and unmarshalling in their standard libs, e.g. C#, golang, python.
MeteorMarc··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Would it even be possible to ban open weight models, given all the ways they can be used in finetuned models or online services, also in 3rd countries?
MeteorMarc··on Terence Tao's ChatGPT conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture counterexample
I think the questions are sufficiently suggestive to induce hallucinations. Still a lot of manual work to check all these claims.
MeteorMarc··on Why do AI company logos look like buttholes? (2025)
My son remarked: because they produce shit.
MeteorMarc··on World-First 'Super Alloy' Could Transform the Way Metals Are Made
Not only the initial strength is important but also the susceptiveness to crack growth during many years of stress. No idea how this structure would perform on this aspect.
MeteorMarc··on Designing and assembling my first PCB
Yes, but not how to copy the paper design to the pcb with the marker pen. I am pretty sure a did the drilling after the etching.
MeteorMarc··on Loss of Cognitive Flexibility, Not Memory, May Be Earliest Sign of Alzheimer's
They can't just change the earliest sign of Alzheimer!
MeteorMarc··on The Particle Box – Kinetic Molecular Theory Simulator
Relative pressure variations do not seem to depend much on number of particles, which seems counterintuitive.
MeteorMarc··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple

MeteorMarc··on Canada plans 'nuclear renaissance' with up to 10 reactors built by 2040
Lets see if there will be any private investments unless gov guarantees fixed minimum price of MWh.
