MetallicCloud··on Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug
Yeah, I was excited until I read that. Last time I was tested I had 48 events per hour. 4 wouldn't help me much.
MetallicCloud··on Map of Metal
I kind of always considered that Industrial Metal, but looking at the examples on the site, they don't really match with what's in my head.

For concrete examples of what I'm thinking, something like Crossbreed[1], or more recently Electric Callboy[2]

MetallicCloud··on Guilty Displeasures
I was obsessed with a handful of Deftones songs back in the day. But outside those, I just couldn't get into them wholesale. I think they just weren't heavy enough for me. Now I'm old, and one of my mates is a huge Alice in Chains fan, and he showed me their ropes (I didn't know much prior). I'm very into them now. It's the same with a lot of bands that were before my time. My dad loves Dire Straights, and I thought they were OK when I was younger. I appreciate them at a different level now.

Not sure what my point is.

MetallicCloud··on Cockatoos have learned to operate drinking fountains in Australia
Same with me, but I was camping as a kid. One took the snag out of my mates bread just as he was about to bite it. It made sure it was dead by hitting it on the tree it landed in.
MetallicCloud··on Why young parents should focus on building trust with their kids
It's at least half of what the article is about.
MetallicCloud··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
I wish they would stop adding anything to the language and document what they have. I constantly need to reverse engineer how things work. For example, I just had to integrate AccessorySetupKit and the docs are laughable.
MetallicCloud··on What the hell is a luminiferous theremin?
It features in one my favourite songs 'Red right hand' by Nick Cave.
MetallicCloud··on How many bathrooms have Neanderthals in the tile?
Could you share the name of the yard?
MetallicCloud··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
As an Australian, is this true? Granted, I grew up rural in Victoria, but I don't know anyone who uses it.
MetallicCloud··on Amazon and iRobot call off their planned acquisition
Sounds like the Dreame L20 Ultra. I have it, it's miles better than any irobot I've owned.
MetallicCloud··on Transparent wood could soon find uses in smartphone screens, insulated windows
It's addressed in the article. It could work as windows, but they'd be 'frosted'.
MetallicCloud··on Ask HN: What's your favourite hobby and how did it start?
I gave it up about 7 years ago, but have recently started again. It's so fun, but so addictive!
MetallicCloud··on Ask HN: What's your favourite hobby and how did it start?
Woodworking - It started when someone on my work slack posted an image of an arcade machine they had made. I thought "I want one of those". So I borrowed a circular saw and made one. Then I was hooked. Now I'm doing lots of home improvements, such as building a coffee bar and converting an unused area into a pantry. I'm currently building some shop furniture, then I'll be converting an unused cupboard near our entry way into a mud room.

The two downsides are: * It's easy to want to buy all the shiniest tools, which are expensive * I don't want to buy furniture anymore, I want to make it. But there just aren't enough hours in the day.

MetallicCloud··on 1919 cartoon depicting the use of a ‘pocket telephone’
As an aside, it's commonly called "Violent agreement".
MetallicCloud··on Water Cooled Rooftop Solar Panels
As an Australian who has moved to the USA, I don't know why it's done. I don't know a single person in Australia who has ever replaced their roof. My dad lives in the same house I was born in 40 years ago, same roof. I've been in Colorado for 4 years. We had a new roof put on 2 years ago, then another 6 weeks ago due to a bad hail storm.
MetallicCloud··on Firefox address bar
Is there a good way to hide the top tabs without getting into barely supported config files?

I like TST, but I gave up on it because I could never get the top tabs hidden correctly, and all the information I could find on the internet was different levels of out of date.

MetallicCloud··on Ask HN: Good Books on the History of Technology?
"Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe" is the best I've read.

MetallicCloud··on Tapping Morse code on a wall
That's an amazing story!
MetallicCloud··on Colorado repealed law limiting municipal internet
I'm in Erie and get Gigabit. It's not symmetrical, but it's the best internet I've ever had.
MetallicCloud··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
I don't know why, but after being a professional programmer for around 20 years, I have replaced all my hobby programming with woodworking. I love it. There's something about having a tangible object you can touch when you're done that makes it satisfying for me.
MetallicCloud··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I like Rust and think it's got a good future. However I've not seen too many job postings that actually use it, but as it catches on more that will probably increase. I guess it depends on if you're thinking near term or long term.
MetallicCloud··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I started writing C++ about 15 years ago. It's still my strongest and most enjoyable language. However, at the moment I mostly write Swift\ObjC because I couldn't find any decent paying C++ jobs. I'd love to get back to it.
MetallicCloud··on Serverless Video Transcription inspired by Cyberpunk 2077
Very cool. Zack Friedman made something similar to wear on a hoody. It wasn't perfect, but it worked. https://youtu.be/mTK8dIBJIqg
MetallicCloud··on Software engineers paying 75K to get 3 inches taller
I haven't seen that movie in years, but I'm quite sure it was his tibia & fibula, not ankles.
MetallicCloud··on American Airlines agrees to purchase Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft
I live in Colorado, but am from Melbourne, Australia. I told everyone the last time I went back that it will be the last visit. That trip is hellish and once every 2 years is still too much.
MetallicCloud··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Totally agree with this. I remember finally getting to play Ultima 9 and being soo disappointed.
MetallicCloud··on A portable wind turbine the size of a water bottle
Really? I'm in Boulder, CO and we often have days of continuous strong winds. We're nowhere near a coast.
MetallicCloud··on Alphabet Announces First Quarter 2022 Results
Do you need to set that up somehow? I use Firefox and UB Origin, and I get lots of ads.
MetallicCloud··on Are you nice or kind?
We had a similar experience when living in NY with two small children. People would always offer to help, but one time in particular a woman grabbed the front of the stroller and started helping me down the subway stairs, then she looked back and said "Could you please go faster, I'm running late". She was in no obligation to help us in the first place. We got to the bottom and she ran off to a train.

I found New Yorkers are always happy to lend a hand when needed.

MetallicCloud··on Lumber rally cools with transport snarls easing, buyers balking
That's quite common in Australia. Is it not in the US?
