MeinBlutIstBlau··on Year 2038 problem is still alive and well
I always ask my 32 bit integers before modifying them:

"What would you say...you do here?"

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Things you notice when you quit the news (2016)
As someone who hasn't been in prison but has done a good job of not letting media outlets getting to me (since I just block a lot of them through my pihole), he's spot on. I've had people on a discord server whom I was friends with basically oust me simply because I had some marginally more conservative views than them. My experiences were invalid because they did not align with their worldviews. That is the media today with social media platforms amplified in that regard as well.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Ask HN: What are your contrarian views?
PHP is still a good language to learn.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
I don't think he gets anything wrong after the first essay. Everything after just sounded like a way to make a mountain out of a molehill in terms of an interesting essay.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Divorce in the rich world is getting less nasty
Canada has one of the highest suicide rates among divorced men because of their even more draconian alimony/child support payments.

Long story short, don't get married in Canada. Dave Foley on the Joe Rogan Podcasts (in like the 0-200's episodes) went through his divorce and explained how absurd it was.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Down the Rabbit Hole: The world of estranged parents' forums (2015)
I believe there was a reddit thread one time about some family in New York that cut ties from their parents or grandparents, and due to some age old Kinship law, the elders could take children to court for not allowing them to see grandchildren or something of the like.

It's fascinating in the US that we've gotten to the point that families can break contact entirely and be successful but due to completely out of date institutions baked in to law, we're stuck with arbitrary reasons to engage with hostile people. As a judge, why would you ever grant rights of a grandparent willing to take their children to court to see their grand children short of an abuse related situation?

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Buy a coal mine, drive a gas guzzler, and other uses of reverse logic
I bought a new car this year when I graduated and got a new job. The main reason I didn't buy an EV is because of the cost, the dependability (I'm not gonna be a guinea pig wasting time getting repairs that not many people know how to resolve yet), and because I live in the Midwest where salted roads in winter just eat the hell out of everything. So I'm gonna need a new car in 5-10 years anyway.

Obviously EV is the future. But with this "Vehicles as a Service" model where a lot of stuff is not meant to be touched by you, it seems like cars are just getting absurdly more expensive for no reason at all. EV is a marketing term so that somehow causes the product to be worth an extra $5k right off the bat.

By driving less than 10-20 miles a week with a gas vehicle, I feel like I'm actually doing more to save the planet than the typical EV driver doing 100+ miles thinking their excessive driving is 100% eco-friendly. Consumption is never eco-friendly.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
I dont make $500 a month but in the next 5 years I hope to if not more. I make pottery, mugs, and bowls for fun. Only after doing it for so long did I realize that you can honestly make a living off of it. So long term when tech discrimination hits me but the arthritis doesnt, I'll be making pots til I'm dead!
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
When I worked in mortgages in a previous career, we had a presenter talk to us about Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). Back in the day, banks by default would just tack it on as an extra insurance for them in case you were to default. You're basically paying insurance against yourself to cover the banks losses. Once it was added, it was basically permanent for the life of the loan.

Then one day, a senator I think from Utah was asking about his his costs after signing. The bank explained to him that it was PMI and he couldn't remove it.

Thanks to that situation, PMI cannot be enforced if the loan to value ratio is below a specified threshold and the banks cannot force it on you if you meet that threshold prior to closing or after you reach it.

In a nutshell, this is what needs to happen before a lawmaker bothers.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Log4j: Between a rock and a hard place
My team still uses .Net Framework 4.6. That's from like 2015. While not "ancient," it's still pretty old. But for instance, when the SolarWinds hack ocurred, we actually lucked out cause we were using a version of it before the intrusion.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
Wouldn't that be because they can only afford the rundown house in the bad neighborhood, but the city has not corrected the tax levy because people keep living there?

Cities don't just levy higher taxes on minorities. It's more likely the city retained the levied amount and did not change it after the white people moved. Now because it's in a "bad" neighborhood, appraisal values fall, but the city government still believes it retains it's specific value.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Black couple ‘erases themselves’ from their home, its value goes up by $500k
I worked in the mortgage industry for a while and appraisals are 100% made up metrics. We consistently utilized specific appraisers who would "always" make sure the purchased house came in at the maximum value of our loan amount (80% of the purchase price). The taxes said it wasn't even worth the amount these people bought it for.

Half the time lenders and us would joke saying we could be an appraiser. It's so easy, just look at your database of "comparable" properties and just say "heres a ballpark figure."

We're headed for another 2008 like a goddamn train with no brakes. Whatever the federal government did to curb that, they didn't police the mortgage industry enough. Appraisers, realtors, and lenders are all complicit with only the banks getting oversight. Lenders can go through banks, but they don't have to be immediately affiliated with them. So they can literally be ignoring rights "guaranteed" by the government since 2008. On top of this, they charge single digit percentage fees for the loans. It is such a giant joke that honestly the government shouldn't bail out at all. Owning a house should be a legitimate risk. Not this farcical system of laundering money.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
>The US trails Canada and Western European countries in self employment as a percentage of the labour force.

I distinctly remember being told by an Austrian I met once that they need a sizable amount of liquid assets up front before they can even qualify for operating a business.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Assembly Language is Number 8
[0]: https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Intel-Assembly-Language-...

Ray Sefarth Introduction to 64 Bit Intel Assembly Language Programming for Linux was what we used in my architecture class. I thought it was good coming from only knowing Java at the time.

That class alone laid the world flat for me in regards to the "totality" of software development. Literally everything comes down to the 1's and 0's running through millions of transistors or whatever they are in the CPU. You are literally sending electric pulses through a rock and getting it to talk :)

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
Same boat here. I'm eyeball some silent reds right now so if you could share what you got if you've had it for a while I'm all ears. Ideally I'd like to own a mechanical keyboard that just isn't going to have a key die on me.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Divorce does funny things
Not to mention men get no benefit out of marriage anymore. I mean there was some book I remember reading on reddit from the 1920s or 40s where women were not supposed to reject their husbands advances. Now you could be tried for sexual assault as a couple ffs. On top of this, divorce universally screws over men.

When you create incentive programs such as divorce, a population doesnt take long to adapt to the institutions horror stories. No marriage means no alimony on breakup. Also no marriage means women wont be as likely to leave if they do not work because of it especially if they have a small support network.

Women have also become more independent. Much like Japan, many western women dont wanna be baby makers. The government kinda forgot though that...well...its kinda important for society. Single mothers increasing helps nobody and dudes are less likely to pay child support when not from marriage.

Overall its been a massive cultural change that will affect future generations significantly. How do you get people to care for a future they arent allowed to create? If anything, apathy to the future generations has been growing since many people dont have children to care for.

From a security standpoint, how did NPM become a thing? Bar none, it feels like the most compromisable system short of SCADA.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
Sweden did and theyre fine...
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Covid is surging in Europe. Experts say it’s a warning for the U.S.
It's almost as if the governments of the world had no power to actually stop this and they just utilized it as a major power grab.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
In modern times, you serve an economy because if you don't, you starve. This isn't star trek socialism. It's a survival of the fittest environment.

The government stepping in and saying "NOPE! WE KNOW BEST!" and then basically forcing every citizen to restructure their lives for something that couldn't even remotely be contained just shows the abuse of power. Even among private institutions. Look how many took advantage of the government PPP loans or outright laid off workers just for the hell of it.

The majority of the COVID deaths can be attributed to the old, obese, and sickly people. But most institutions serve people outside of that set. But because we have to protect the already dying, lets shut down everything and make life miserable for everyone! Lets not just tell these people to stay inside and be shut ins even though we could've!

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Sweden no longer stands out in pandemic, says architect of ‘no lockdown’ policy
So if the government did such a bad job policing people from staying at home, why did we even bother with continuing with the stay at home orders? It was obvious from the end of 2020 that nobody was abiding by it and police clearly weren't enforcing these completely unconstitutional laws.

Yet here we are with the same death toll we would've had, but this time with almost 2x inflation, ridiculous shortages, and supply chain failures all around.

But hey, at least we saved a few old or obese people already knocking on deaths door...

MeinBlutIstBlau··on U.S. states file updated antitrust complaint against Google
My lead has been working for 30 years as a dev and has told me his salary has been pretty consistent throughout so I don't believe that's the case. The coastal cities project absurd salaries but when I look at indeed across all of the US, 60-120k is pretty standard depending on entry to senior. If they got knocked down a peg, I highly doubt a lot of people working for google or microsoft would be vying for the lame boring "conservative" work environments in the midwest or south.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Dataminers are finding developer comments and unlicensed songs in GTA Trilogy
I some wargames like indie game but required an online ping to even play. Their previous title they did the same but not required a connection for it. They said just for their other title, over 90% of them were pirated copies. So that is why they mandated DRM.

I wouldnr have so much of an issue wirh online DRM if I got a guarantee of X years to play it. Some of these devs could just drop support or Windows messes with it that ita unplayable. So at that point I just want support.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on Monopoly supplier of critical Pentagon semiconductors shuts down its production
Don't worry, the USA will soon have TM at the top of it with an "Owned by China" so we won't even need to do it. We'll just be forced to!
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Breakdown of data on homeless populations across the U.S.
I've never met a homeless person that actually wanted to get out of homelessness to not do so. Almost all homeless people I've ever run into are the severely mentally ill and drug addicts. It's awful to say this, but they are not worth devoting resources to if they can't fix themselves. They are lost causes until they decide themselves that they are not. It'd be great if we could help them, but it's an utter waste of time to devote resources to these people who just don't want to change. If they want to prove us wrong, they need to show us they want to change. We're not gonna be some sort of saviors to them to foster an enabling environment for them to just abuse.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Chinese embassy lobbies U.S. business to oppose China bills
I wonder if the onset of globalization and offshoring US factories to China on top of Citizens United will be remembered as the US's "Fall of Rome" moment. The US essentially allowed the government to be bought and paid for by foreign entities and is relying on said countries for most manufactured goods. So now the other country can essentially say "Our laws are your laws otherwise we're not going manufacture your goods." China doesn't need to occupy us, they just need to buy us out.
MeinBlutIstBlau··on Ask HN: What do you think about the no-code movement?
That's because business analysts don't get to touch code because they don't know what they're doing. You give every generic Business Degree holder access to visual studio and make custom apps and suddenly 5-10 years down the road companies will be relying on a sole piece of terribly optimized, unsafe, and security prone software that hackers globally will have a wet dream over.

This isn't just an "Oh developers trying to retain their jobs" rhetoric. This is a "keep power tools away from children" concept. Not saying Comp Sci degrees are terribly hard to acquire, just that there is a reason those people went in and got a Business degree and not a hard science degree. It's typically because they wanted the easy way out.

MeinBlutIstBlau··on How to invest without knowing the future
>AFAIK, historically it has always ended up better to remain invested in the market.

It always has. Historically everything goes up. What everybody forgets in this scenario is what if a sizeable chunk of your liquid assets are tied up in investments during a crash and you're 5-10 years to retirement? You're seriously going to wait another 10 years for the market to correct itself to then cash out so you don't lose any money? No you might even be dead before you even have the chance to use it.
