MawKKe··on The Timer in WatchOS 10
The whole timer/alarm app experience in iOS is also the worst of all mobile OS's I've ever used. The best one was in Jolla SailfishOS. In 2014. It was so easy to add/remove/enable/disable multiple timers and alarms. And when they triggered, you could snooze or dismiss it with a simple gesture.

In iOS, you can't even have more than one active timer at a time. Like wtf??? Also, when the timer or alarm clock triggers, you are presented with view containing two buttons (yellow and purple). One of them snoozes, one of them dismisses. Which one is which, you ask? You see, to keep things simple and consistent, the button actions (and labels) switch places depending on whether the view was triggered by an alarm or a timer. Oh! and the label text color is white, which makes it reeeeeeally difficult to tell which of the fucking buttons is which, especially in a rush or in the morning when your eyes are foggy.

I would have replaced this shitty ass app in a heartbeat, except Apples strict controls kneecap all third party apps by preventing them from running in the background...

MawKKe··on GNU Parallel, where have you been all my life?
1000 cores?? I don't have 100 cores! What do you even need 10 cores for? Well, here's 4 cores. Give 2 to your brother. Don't go wasting all those hyper threads all at once!

MawKKe··on Ferengi Rules of Acquisition
We're all Ferengi now...
MawKKe··on This is valid Python syntax
while that works, it does not fully document what is expected from caller. And AFAIK using tuples like that is not very common. I'd prefer something like:

  def foo(allowed: Optional[List[ElemType]] = None):
    allowed = allowed or []
    ...

When I took a "presentation skills" course at Uni, they taught us that humans are very bad at reading and listening at the same time. Something about the brain regions utilized by these two activities overlap, and cannot be simultaneously be processing two different things. For this reason the visual portion of a presentation (slides) should be kept minimal and act as immediate support for the vocal portion of the presentation. If the two are not "in sync" the audience is unable to follow the presentation fully.

I think 3b1b videos constantly break this rule; there is a LOT of going on visually, while the narrator is talking non-stop about some loosely related things or trivia. More often than not I have to re-watch segments multiple times because I cannot understand what the hell am I supposed to be paying attention to.

MawKKe··on OBS Studio Lands AV1 and HEVC RTMP Streaming Support
I've been wondering about that multi track thing w.r.t video live streams

Wouldn't it make sense to have separate channels for distinct content streams (e.g game capture, face camera, overlays..) so that you could independently choose/optimize each channel's compression and thus make the whole stream more efficient?

I don't know anything about compression algorithms, but I hypothesize that maybe now the algos would also be able to do a better job since the frames have less abrupt discontinuities (in the viewport perspective).

This would also enable stream viewers's to activate/deactivate channels when needed. For example, when the overlay/webcam/etc occludes the view on layer (channel) below.

MawKKe··on Use the XDG Base Directory Specification
Exactly. It feels foolish to demand N unrelated applications implement support for the same arbitrary ruleset N different times.

Why must applications incorporate implementation details of the deployment environment? Why does the environment owner not have tooling to control where files are placed?

MawKKe··on Zero one infinity rule
Sure if you know the operating domain, just hard code some sensible upper limit and move on. Not that this way is "better" in all cases. YAGNI and all that

Also I don't understand why modern shells are so conservative about the defaults. I understand that if a single history file is large, it might slow down shell startup and operation, but at the very least shells could/should do periodic history file rotation. It's very very very unlikely that the history files will be eating all the disk space.

Although sounds like your problem could also be caused by I/O saturation?

MawKKe··on Study Confirms That Major Labels Control Spotify Playlists

MawKKe··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
True, however it seems that you cannot export the scan as-is from the Notes app; the resulting file is padded weirdly for whatever stupid reason. No such ”feature” is forced on the scans via the Files app scan.
MawKKe··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
That iOS scan feature is "hidden" in the Files app. Open it on your phone and press the three dots in the top right corner and it should have "scan documents" option.

You can also select "black & white" mode for text documents which saves a ton of space

You can instruct ffprobe to output the metadata in JSON (-print_format json), removing the need for manual parsing. Although you already utilize "-print_format compact" - was this a deliberate choice?

Also, you don't have to do manual stdout buffering. Have a look at ReadChapters function in here: https://github.com/MawKKe/audiobook-split-ffmpeg-go/blob/f95... (fyi it's my own repo)
